What games will benefit MOST from new graphics power?

In the new systems? Here's my personal picks:

Legend of Zelda

Zelda's always been on the cutting edge of technology with practically every new system release. Awesome 2D graphics on SNES, Crazy graphics on Ocarina of Time at the time (remember seeing the temple of time and Ganon's Tower for the first time? WOW), and the Moon and feel in Majora's Mask was really awesome too. And wind Waker, while many thought the style may be bad, you couldn't say it wasn't impressive. The new Zelda coming out also looks really outstanding from early screenshots,, even if it may not be as cutting edge as RE 4 .. it is still outstanding. Legend of Zelda will definately benefit a lot in style and play on the next system.

Grand Theft Auto

When you are making a game on a living breathing world, that's pretty ambitious. I play the GTA games of today and think, while how great they are now ... imagine some of the stuff they could do with more power ... if they are doing this stuff on the most technologically inferior system this generation. And just the obvious stuff would be so great - extending how far you can see in the game instead of having cars popup really close on screen ... bigger more prettier landscapes, better graphics and physics ... more audio coverage ... going in practically any building ... more destructable environments ... and thats not even mentioning all the cool new cars, weapons, and gameplay stuff they could add in. Sky's still the limit for this game.

Those are my two best picks ... of course there are others .... a DOA game I'm sure Tecmo will make porn quality graphics :lol , a new Resident Evil wil crazy power, and more on screen battles and amount of gameplay in something like a new Super Smash Brothers.

You already mention 2 of my choices. GTA and DOA (pervy games in general). I just hope that Team Ninja just doesn't take the same basic DOA models and up polys and texture effects a bit. The models need a total redesign. Some flaws on their skin would be nice (not really flaws but like pores, freckles, etc...) so they don't look like dolls. Also, about GTA. Expect to see a much smaller landmass than san andreas. It's gonna take much more work to create a city with the detail next gen allows.

Uhhhh..

All of them.

I don't know how much it would help Mario as bringing that character to a new level of detail is a challenge artistically, but I can't think of a single game that can't do with better graphics.

GTA, Gran Turismo, MGS, Socom, Halo, Final Fantasy, Madden, Resident Evil, Tony Hawk, etc.

Even Katamari Damacy, Frequency, Rez, and a host of more gameplay centric titles will benefit.

That being said, Silent Hill could become a literal interactive horror movie with shit that would make you lose control of your functions. That game is all about the presentation and the mood it creates.

First posted really nailed it for me. Zelda with Rebirth's graphics or better, and GTA with cars the quality of that GC Spaceworld demo.

Zone of The Enders.

If that series had a new installment on a next-gen console, I can't imagine the madness that it'd assault your eyes with. I think it was one of the best looking games this gen, but it's slept on by most.

With a step or two up, no one could turn away...and that'd be for the better.

Agreed with sonycowboy. It would be easy to say one type of game would benefit most, but it really comes down to developer skill with a particular type of hardware. Once devs are familiar with hardware, it's strengths, weaknesses, and quirks, they can do amazing things.

i remember reading an interview with Kojima before the PS2 was released and he talked about how he hated the design of the system's hardware. A few months later, in another interview during the development of MGS2 (IIRC), he talked about how it was difficult to program, but that his team were masochists and that the challenge brought about some interesting results.

Any third person game (especially outdoor settings). Draw distance and texture detail will add so much life to the game setting. Oddworld Stranger is one of the best looking games I've ever played but the grass doesn't move. GTA has such a big game world, but half of it is empty or is popping up in front of you as you go.

I really look forward to close to zero pop-up on the next gen of games.

Actually i guess most genre of games will benefit equally.
GTA next-gen may suck just as much compared to other types of next-gen games because again it will run so many things at the same time compared to it.

Oh god, Zelda is is the best you can come up with? Nintendo could still be working with N64 hardware and Zelda would still have the exact same core gameplay. Being able to make a better looking game does not constitute what the thread title implies, otherwise fucking Pong and Tetris would benefit from more graphic power.

GTA is a decent example-- I could actually see the gameplay being innovated through better hardware. But damn, if you think Zelda is going to make leaps and bounds with new technology you really need to play more games.

He said "benefit", not "innovate". And as was already mentioned, I think that could apply to nearly all games in all genres...games like Pong and Tetris notwithstanding.

jesus pull the stick out of your ass.

Socom and Monster Hunters both will be able to handle more players online without the lost of frame rate.

Since GTA:SA looked like crap, it will obviously benefit greatly when it's not an eyesore. Knowing that Rockstar has the resources to create tons and tons of art for it doesn't hurt things...

There isn't really any one game that's been released with 3D graphics that couldnt' benefit from more graphical power. I mean, something like Halo 2 on next gen hardware would be able to pull off levels twice the size with 5 times as many enemies on screen I would think, or you could just make the same number of enemies extremly detailed. GTA style games would probably see the most improvement though.

GTA games will always look shitty.

Next gen graphics will make them look great judged alone, but there will be other games out there too, so the bar will be much higher. And Rockstar seem fine to concentrate on the story/world etc first, then music, and graphics last. So they will always look relatively poor compared to peers of their time.

I don't actually want GTA games to look too realistic. Too much realism would make it disturbing. I much rather they give it some visual style like they do with the box arts and posters.

Other than that, I think games like RE and Metroid that feeds off great atmosphere and mood would benefit most with better graphics. And maybe games that relies on water like Wave Race, since Blue Storm was still quite some far from being realistic.

Mahjong games

I second this. Also, Columns would be awesome with new Shrek 400-bit Blast Processing X-Treme power. The blocks could have bloom lighting and super rainbow garbage bin texture filtering and it wouldn't make the frame rate drop or anything.

Simply put, games that strive for realism.
But also games with a strong emphasis on well-developed atmosphere, like horror games.

Also, will sound in games change in any noticable way next gen?

Anything that currently has a poor frame rate, noticeable aliasing, a short draw distance, a lot of pop-up, or tries to display small details. But who am I kidding, it will be decades before noone will want to beef up other graphical aspects and let the frame rate and pop-up get nasty.

The next GTA will be, in my point of view, bigger and better. This, while still being the same as the previous installment.
That is, in the gameplay department.

But the games are highly enjoyable, so i don't really care.

I did play vice city more than san andreas, though...

Games with multiple enemies.

For example I want Doom 3 - but with original Doom enemy counts.

I'd be happy to see Halo 3 with Halo 2 quality models and lighting. But at 60 fps with SHITLOADS OF ADVERSERIES to battle.....Ie: the flood attacking where they really are a flood, thousands of them swarming across the horizon as you and your platoon of *20-30* AI buddies engage them.

I would have been happy if Halo 2 was just Halo 1 engine running at 60 fps instead of this Level of Detail mess we got. I mean, there were more flood coming for you in Halo 1 than in any point in Halo 2 that I can remember in Heroic.

At least the framerate was better than Halo, much more stable.

And have you ever played Serious Sam? Shitloads of crazy enemies, all with their distinctive sounds and weapons.

GAMES WITH ANTI ALIASING AND SHIMMERING!

If next gen has IQ issues... I'm gonna go out and kill something. Probably small and furry.

Sports games in general have a larger audience than any franchise, plus it's usually a great marker for checking gen to gen advancements.

I'm not into sprts games on consoles with the rare exception to NCAA football, but new sports games do tend to get the most attention, but I must say a good racing series ALA Ridege Racer would be a great attention grabber as well.
