Specs/Technologically speaking, what is the difference between DVD-R and DVD+R?

I always thought that " - " when saying CD-ROM for example, was merely a dash. All of the sudden it's "minus" in today's lingo. So what, CD-ROMs are CD minus ROMs?

So, yeah, ultimately, is there a difference in DVD+R and DVD-R?

DVD-R holds slightly more data... Higher compatability (although there are ways to increase +R compatability as well)...

-R is more expensive I believe.

I stick w/ -R for the most part.

There doesnt seem to be much of a difference at all...

Apparently -r media is slightly more compatible with dvd players... but thats all Ive really heard about it.

+R has wobblier grooves.

ok ok ok,

when you read

DVD-R

You pronounce that (by simply reffering to it) as " DVD R", NOT, " DVD minus R "

Right?

Nowadays, do we say "Hey let me get a pack of 50 DVD minus R's" ?

If this is true then, then ALL THIS TIME we have been referring to CD-ROM as "CD ROM" and NOT "CD minus ROM".

One would argue, that CD-ROM simply has a dash and not a minus but the DVD-R's are "minus" and not dash.

If you go to google and you type "DVD plus R" you get many results on "DVD+R" but if you type "DVD minus R" you don't get many results on "DVD-R".

Do I detect a silly consumer lingo misrepresentation?

I don't get it. Type in "DVD minus R" instead of "negative" and you get lots of related results.

To be more succinct, you should type in "DVD positive R" if you're going to use "negative" to search for -R.

DVD+R allows bitsetting, so you can set discs to read as DVD-ROMs, thus giving them better compatibility than DVD-Rs.

DVD dash R.

People say minus because they are stupid. I talk to an average of 5 people a day about DVDs at work, and have never once heard them say dash. That's roughly 1300 people since I've been working there.

You can type DVD dash r and you will get results, too.

edit: ^ beat me to the "dash" comment.
