what jrpg are you playing right now ?

Odin Sphere Leifthrasir on vita. Pretty great so far. I also got Murasama though, and I don't know if this gameplay is going to hold up across two different games.

Just beat DQ IV's remake for the Nintendo DS. Might as well quote my post from the community thread.
I beat Dragon Quest IV! Spoilers ahead.

I'm just gonna start this out with my biggest pet peeve about JRPG villains because it's one of the few nitpicks I have with the game: I hate it when games have these really cool looking antagonists that you constantly see throughout the game and then you never get to fight them. I mean, you "fight them", but you fight the monstrous aberration with wings version of them or, in this case, a... horned giant frog thing?(kind of an underwhelming design for a final boss, tbh) It just doesn't feel satisfying to me unless you get to beat him in his actual original
better
design at least once, you know? Not in a cutscene or a scripted fight but an actual battle. I call it the Sephiroth syndrome, but since Psaro was the original long haired pretty boy you don't actually get to fight, I might as well call it the Psaro syndrome from now on.
That aside, the last fight itself was great. It felt more climatic than the one from DQ V and towards the end things just got really intense. The ending itself was also pretty sweet.

Overall, I guess there's not much to say other than that it's a very solid entry in the franchise and definetely the most impressive NES rpg I've played. Psaro is also the strongest DQ villain and the only one to have a sympathetic background and motivations other than "evil overlord who wants mankind's destruction because POWER". Really nice balance between challenging and fair
besides bullshit status spells that hits everyone, do you hear me pink dragonriders in the last dungeon who KEEP PUTTING MY PARTY TO F******* SLEEP
, I liked all the main characters and pretty much all of them played a part in my team all the way up to and including the final boss. Except Torneko. Sorry man, you're just kinda weak :(

Absolute and undeniable power rankings of the series that shall not be questioned: V > VIII > IV > I > II. The first three places are relatively close to one another though
Next up, DQ III.

I'm currently playing Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Hoy War (with the newest english patch) and Final Fantasy Tactics, not sure if those count as JRPGs.
Also replaying VII with a difficulty mod and it's been great, liking it better than the first time I played it actually, but I'm taking it really slow.

Question: which version of Lunar is better, PS1 or Sega CD?

Everything that I think makes Lunar special and one of my favorite RPGs is from the PS1 version. I only recently played the Sega CD game and was surprised at how bare it was. It feels like a rough draft. Like Mother 1 to Earthbound. For example, one of the things I love most in Lunar is the characters will respond to everything people say in the towns. It's usually very funny and there's often back and forth banter between the characters. There's almost none of that in the Sega CD version.

Seems decent so far. However, the encounter rate is insane. Apparently it's better than the dreamcast version, but it's still pretty annoying.

Chance raise and almost always instant death via one spell is some of the worst game design i've ever seen.

It is actually worse in the Dreamcast version. There is an item that makes it slightly better. I was extremely annoyed by the encounter rate, especially when looking for damn items and locations, but I got use to it, though I am hardened to encounter rates from playing old school jrpgs

First time playing Final Fantasy X and loving it. Right in the final dungeon, will be starting X-2 in the next couple of days.

Love Rikku!

Playing through FFXII right now.
Never played it before, but after the announcement of the Remaster thought I'd give it a shot.

Five hours in and I'm really enjoying it, love the more grounded feel compared to other Final Fantasy's.

Yeah, I managed to pick it up today. I've been using it on the over-world and it has become much more manageable.

Playing through Kingdom Hearts 1.5 Remix, first time returning to the series since I played the first two on PS2 long ago.

I find it surprising they didn't use more arrangements of Disney music for the worlds, but I imagine that changes as Disney became comfortable with the success of the IP.

Ni No Kuni. Hated the battle system on my first try. Stopped the game after 10h. It's still not what I would prefer but it is far more enjoyable on my second try now. I'm loving everything else.

Oh, you mean like party chat? If that's the case then yeah, the PS1 version definetely sounds like the way to go.

Beat Breath of Fire IV last weekend, the final dungeon was huge and the final encounters took forever (even after grinding for a few levels)... pretty fun game overall, though the controls are terribly clunky, the game starts out pretty slow, and there are some pacing issues in the 3rd act.

Up to the final boss of Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time. Which wouldn't be a bad game if not for 2 fatal flaws - the camera is zoomed in far too close, which makes the platforming that the game relies on much more difficult. And when you have a party of 4 and are battling enemies, the game slows to an absolute crawl. Both of these are probably because I'm playing the DS version, maybe I should have bought the Wii game? So many otherwise great games last gen were put on DS because it was the sales king, and ended up severely compromised as a result.

Also this weekend I played through Genso Suikogaiden vol 1. A visual novel set during the time of Suikoden 2. Not really an RPG but it's a game I wanted to beat as part of my Suiko series playthrough. It's short as hell, took me a bit over 3 hours, and there's no real challenge (as it's a VN). Gonna play through vol 2, and then go back to a shorter RPG to hold me over till SO5. Thinking Final Fantasy Legend 3...

I think I'm finally, FINALLY, on the cusp of finishing P4G... though I wouldn't be surprised if there is another dungeon after this one... or more... :/

Having less of an issue with the encounter rate in Skies than I am with the time it takes battles just to begin. Gotta load in each character/baddie individually! Was it done any better in the GC version?

Still playing Xenoblade Chronicles X but now with a few cheats applied lol. Found a cool way to do that without hacking my console. Max money and Battle Points really made a difference in my enjoyment of the game now that a big chunk of the grind was removed.

Being able to proceed from story point to story point, or interesting affinity quest to the next without the worry for resources or grinding BP is great. Having maxed skills did not make much impact on the combat though. Modded a few weapons to give resources like TP on skill use to speed things up as well. Game is way better now for me.

Really interested to see where the story goes and the side stories now that I am motivated to do them without having the nonsense gathering quests to worry about.

Dragon Quest Heroes 2. Blazed through the story in 3 days.

It is MUCH MUCH MUCH better than its predecessor. The online-multiplayer is pretty fun as well.

I've seen digimon mentioned that much in this thread (positively) that I think I'm in. Been wanting a turn based jrpg on ps4 for a while now and got it down to Atelier Sophie, Digimon or Disgaea 5.

Okies now I'm at the point where the random battles in SoA are actively annoying me. Just wanna find discoveries! Wait I'm just circling the camera around my skip not actively moving forward or backwards! Game plz! >_<

Mario and Luigi Paper Jam. I'm guessing I'm somewhat halfway through, I'm in the dungeon bout to enter Bowser's Castle I think. The battle system and the boss battles have been great, along with some nice music, but the rest is pretty eh. If I never see a goddamn Toad again I'd be more than happy.

Speaking of party chat I wish more rpgs had it an way more fleshed out then just a couple lines per area like DQ. It'd be great for fleshing out characters more and getting flavor comments to the crazy places an situations ya find yourself in outside of plain old cutscenes.

I've been playing Xenoblade Chronicles X for the Wii U on a second playthrough, this time focusing on correcting my mistakes from the first and doing a lot of the post-game stuff, including the Heart-to-Heart missions for the core cast of characters.

I know people either love or hate XCX - there's no middle ground with the second installment of the Xenoblade series. I didn't quite have the same reaction to Xenoblade Chronicles X with some of the more impressionable RPG's that I've have played before it, but it really grew on me over time. The world is incredibly vast and exploration is so strong, and the combat mechanics are so dense there's no room for dilly-dallying. The game truly shines when you create your own goals or adventures & slowly learn more about planet Mira, the creatures that inhabit it, and the dangers involved beyond the alien alliance that's trying to make humanity a bad memory.

Of course, XCX is definitely a game that demands the player to be fully immerse, and at times can be incredibly intimidating if you have no affinity towards the JRPG genre or don't bother with leaning the core mechanics. But I find learning all the game's ins and outs was particularly satisfying, as it felt like I've accomplished something. I'm on my way to getting the Aries 90, along with obtaining the equipment for my Ether Blossom Dance build.

Phew! Done with Skies of Arcadia and in less then 40 hours! Dunno why my other endgame saves were so much higher... guess not using good guides and wasting time getting grossly overleveled? lol.

But I'm slightly burned out now after putting in at least 16 hours between yesterday an today x.x; Dunno what I'll play next. Hopefully something short an non-demanding. Gonna take a brief gaming break an come back fresh!

edit! on the bright side I don't gotta keep setting my Dreamcasts clock before each session ~_~ why couldn't they make the internal battery as easy to replace as the Saturns??

Almost finished with FFX. While I was more interested this time (first time I played it, I only got a few hours before dropping it), I'm still somewhat disappointed. Definitely feels like a Toriyama Final Fantasy, even with some strong qualities that made the previous games stand out to me. By the time I'm finished, I will have had enough of this world and story. The expansiveness of the world is pretty disappointing, and it's about as bad as XIII when it comes to funneling you, and then opening up at literally the very end.

I started FF VIII on PC, and am playing it with Roses and Wine and SweetFX mods. It holds up nicely this way. I'm finding the writing to be a bit more cringy than I remember, but I'm actually enjoying the moment-to-moment gameplay more than FFX. We'll see how I feel after 30 hours.

I will most likely pick up Star Ocean 5, and am going to play it very quickly before I run out of free time.

Then, it's on to Final Fantasy XV. Most likely the last game I will play for this year.

despite buying both at launch im barely going to start trails in the sky SC and cold steel tomorrow.
one at a time of course.

yes im ashamed

Wild Arms 3.

I hope Sony give us more PS2 games.

My favorite Wild ARMs game. It doesn't look very stylish or cool, but I think all in all it's the best package of the series. I like most of the characters, the music is great, there's a lot of variety in how you can set up your characters, and it gets pretty open ended at one point - room for exploration. It's on PS4 now right? I might have to revisit it.

I wanted to try something different, so with 7th Dragon III coming out soon I decided to play the un-localized earlier games in the series. I know some of them have fan-translations but I decided just to play them in Japanese and use wikis/Google Translate when I needed it. The original game has a good overworld structure and the party/job system is solid, but the Flower field mechanic - which effectively works like perpetual poison fields - is really cumbersome. The bosses are kinda pathetic too. The music is great at times, I haven't played many Koshiro-scored titles but I've certainly heard praise for him.

7th Dragon 2020 is quite a bit different, the annoying Flower fields are gone but so is the rest of the overworld. Instead, dungeon locales are just selected sequentially from a list, which is a bummer. However, the FOE and boss battles are a little more intricate and tough, which I appreciate. As one can gather from the title, the style is more the neo-modern with music to match. It's alright.

I'm currently playing 7th Dragon 2020-II, which seems to ramp up the difficulty a little bit more alongside the number of cutscenes. Repeated dungeon maps is disappointing though.

Mario and Luigi:Paper Jam Bros

Enjoying this title. Played for about 6-7 hours or so. Like the use of the paper characters and paper mario in combat is a good addition overall.

Dragon Quest II on iOS

the ports of the NES games on mobile are really good, though it can be easy to sort of lose where you're going when continuously playing in short bursts

I finished that first game on iOS and it was fantastic. the best way to play that game by far.

Dragon Quest Heroes 2. Blazed through the story in 3 days.

It is MUCH MUCH MUCH better than its predecessor. The online-multiplayer is pretty fun as well.

I'm glad to hear! I liked the first game a lot but sort of fell off of it. I'd like to go back to it soon, though, because I'm very excited for 2

Between Heroes and Builders and VII and VIII on 3DS we are spoiled for Dragon Quest after being starved for so long

Wild Arms 3.

I hope Sony give us more PS2 games.

Hey I just beat this myself a few days ago. I really liked that they finally nailed the Wild West theme (the first two had too many diverse environments which made it feel more like generic fantasy), the music, main character designs, and puzzles as well. The story was forgettable, the villains were lame and generic, and the combat doesn't really change much, I found most of the spells I was casting at the beginning of the game I was casting at the end of it. Overall 6/10.

The next JRPG I'm probably going to play is Tokyo Mirage Sessions FE which looks like it has a fun combat system like most SMT games tend to do, hopefully it has a strong story as well. I have high hopes for it.

Xenoblade Chronicles. I've been playing it for about a year now and i am wanting to start other JRPGs soon. The thing is, i am still enjoying it and probably only about 50% done with the game LOL (yes i don't have a lot of time to game)

I think I'll get back to Wild ARMs 3 after I beat Chrono Trigger (or maybe after Star Ocean 5 and ZE3 and I am Setsuna and Indigo Prophecy).

But for now, I'm replaying Chrono Trigger (PSN version, yes the inferior one) for the 15-20th time already.

I'm playing Atelier Sophie at the moment. Super comfy and endearing, as to be expected for an Atelier game. Only about 10 hours on but I probably spent 3/4 of my time just crafting (or playing crafting tetris, to be exact). I wish my companions has better and longer personal quests though.

My favorite Wild ARMs game. It doesn't look very stylish or cool, but I think all in all it's the best package of the series.

I thought it looked cool >.>

Bought Odin Sphere and Trails: Cold Steel last night as part of the PSN Sale/$100 thing. Probably not going to jump into Trails for a few months lol.

Still blasting through Xenoblade X as my main RPG project but getting side tracked by Diablo 3 and Overwatch. Also stalled on Digimon which I was enjoying very much.

Going to grind it out hard in Xenoblade story missions tonight and get this one shelved by next monday hopefully.

currently trying to finish FFXIII-2.

PS3 broke down before I finished the game so I bought PC version. Last I remember around 4 years ago I was last at the Advanced CIty where you meet that girl who died at the intro. Dunno how far into the game that is.

Hopefully I can finish this up within a month but Skyrim and League is eating my time.
