What programs can I use to rip the voice from an audio file?

I know there are ones out there that will do it, as I've got some friends who have done it.

I'm looking for a free program that will do this
 
Umm, you mean single out the voice from all the instruments and stuff?

That's hard to do. Perhaps you are confusing this magical software with something like Sony Acid, where you have INDIVIDUAL tracks that are already seperated and not actually mixed together, thus making it (obviously) easy to just select the vocal track.

Um... try goldwave. www.goldwave.com. It has a "voice removal" option, but for some songs, it removes the instruments and not the voice so much, heh. Depends on how it was mixed.
 
I'd ask my friend that I know did it for several songs, but I haven't seen him online in a few weeks.

I remember him telling me somethnig about ripping out the mono layer of the song or something, and it *usually* worked to get the voice out while keeping the stereo music intact.
