What the heck, IGN? (useless article on "Microsoft Points" for the 360)

Could this be the most useless article ever?

Two long paragraphs about the goal for the article: getting the most number of Microsoft Points for your money.

Then one short paragraph saying that the reason for the article's usefulness was non-existent and that they had been "foiled."

Alright that study didn't prove anything we wanted.

I think the article was aimed moreso towards the mainstream who don't understand what it is (i.e. parents, etc.)...remember, they're a publication and will write towards the mass audience
 
One sentence could have provided that information. For example, "Microsoft Points used on the Marketplace are 80 points per dollar no matter which way you buy them."

But I suppose you can't stuff too many ads on that kind of article...
 
What a stupid article, but I think the author's original intentions were good. He just got sidetracked by god knows what and the article ended up being totally useless.

Here's what I think the article SHOULD have been:

He talks about how buying 500 points gives you 100 MP left over after buying a 400 point game. That's a valid complaint.

So the logical follow-up to this would be to see which payment system gives you NO left over points (knowing that all Live Arcade games cost multiples of 400 MP). The answer then is Tier 3 with 2000 MPs.

Conclusion: Buying 2000 MPs is the way to go if you don't want to get suckered into buying gamer pictures. I spent 2 minutes typing this up, which clearly is more time than the author spent thinking about his article.

US - $6.25 per 500 pionts
Canada - $7.75 per 500 points

As of noon today, the exchange rate was $1.1507 Canadian per every $1 US...

$7.75 Canadian - > $6.74 US dollars

Yup we're getting screwed about a 49 cents every 500 points, or ~10 cents per 100 points. I demand blood.

EDIT - that's American cents. Its $6.25->$7.19, so thats 56 cents we're being jipped! Thats even worse! More blood!

That article was such a waste of time and a piece of crap.

If you wanted to spend your money as efficient as possible, you would have bought a couple 1600 Live Marketplace points from Circuit City for $13 a couple weeks ago. I hate the damn point system though, it makes it easier to bait people into buying useless stuff like those avatar gamer pics, especially when you have points left over from buying a XBL Arcade game. MICROTRANSACTIONS BITCHES

Well what about the parents or those not up to date on Xbox 360 want to find out more about it? Of course all of us would mock the article, we already know this stuff and it isn't aimed towards us.

I could understand this when it comes to this particular article if they hadn't written the final paragraph:
Alright that study didn't prove anything we wanted. Unfortunately, the chart makes it clear that there is absolutely no buying tier that gives you discount. Regardless of what amount of Microsoft Points you purchase for use on the Xbox Live Marketplace, you're always getting 80 Microsoft Points for every dollar you spend. It basically just comes down to how many points you're going to use, there's no best value.

Congratulations! You are a genius. However, the "free" (ad-loaded) content on the site is the best advertisement they have for the exclusive content they want you to pay for. Publishing crap like this on the free site is not going to earn them any subscriptions.
