A few days ago I updated to the lastest version of DirectX (I'm fairly sure that's what did it), and ever since then my desktop's been kinda weird. I can't get any wallpapers to work, the windows key (and mouse button mapped to the same function) that brings up the start menu doesn't work, the start menu now overlaps the status bar of Firefox, and on the left side of my desktop is that menu shit you see when browsing folders (System Tasks, Other Places, and Details) and I can't get rid of it.

Maybe that Active Desktop or whatever is on, try turning it off.

After u updated your DirectX did you make sure your video drivers were up to date?

I updated my video drivers right after I updated direct-x.
