What would you like in a future Dragon Quest XII?

More DQXI, but with orchestrated soundtrack from the start. Also less padding, XI repeats itself far too much. I like how some outcomes are incredibly bleak and happy in the other but some things get repeated 3 times.

I'm still impressed by that. I just realized your party would say different things after I married best girl Bianca and started talking to her more often.

I imagine it took them a lot of work. No wonder 5 is regarded as the best DQ.
Yup and it was always something thoughtful or funny that really reflected the personalities of the characters. I especially loved the dialogues of the kids. Their dialogues always felt like things a kid would say but without being stereotypical.

This is something that no other DQ game managed to replicate to that extend (although i still haven't played VI).

Replace the old turn based battle system with something less boring.

They really knocked it out of the park with XI.

So stay the course.

Take one of Toriyama's 8 possible character designs and slightly alter them like usual.

Don't forget the Dragons or the quests.

Maybe have some slimes appear? This is all off the dome, free advice

I have a feeling the ones complaining about the composer are reeetards. Their hate for the composer isn't because he's a bad music composer but because of other reasons...

More songs. There aren't enough songs in the game. For something that you will likely play for 100 hours, there should be a lot of variety.

The combat system is fine. It has enough depth if you play on Draconian Mode, with harder monsters. If you played on this difficulty, and call the combat simple, you're lying.

I'd love a job system, but it isn't a must. I wasn't too impressed with the board they have in XI.

Pipe dream : Graphics on par with the DQ Netflix movie.

Seriously though a new dq would look amazing if developed on ps5.

That being said graphics aren't everything and dq Xi was still nice looking. One of my favorite games.

I want it to be shorter/denser. Lost interest shortly after the manly parade scene, at that point the combat had long since become an annoyance and the story just wasn't interesting enough to force myself through. :messenger_neutral:

This isn't resetera. Let's keep politics off of video game threads and not accuse people who disagree with you about video game topics of having political motives.

To get back on topic, DQ 11's soundtrack was subpar (and that's being generous). For such a long game, having so few tracks, and having those tracks not be good, really hurt the game. This isn't exactly a hot take from me, as the view on DQ11s lackluster music is widelyprevalent both on NeoGF and elsewhere.

If Sugiyama is a has been who is mailing in the work for DQ, then hire someone who can get the job done. Square brought in a talented team to do the FF7 Remake soundtrack and hit a homerun. They should be willing to do the same with DQ.

To be fair i love Sugiyama's work but i have to admit XI was probably his weakest work which is understandable since the man is 90 years old.

As a new person to the series, I agree that the music in XI can be a little repetitive.

But its good and catchy. And when the music builds up in certain scenes, it can be incredible and hype as fuck. Also in XI S there is the option to use VIII's overworld theme, which is more subdued and relaxing then XI's constantly bombastic world theme.

Bring back the Sugiyama that did the absolutely outstanding soundtrack of FF VIII.

Get rid of some early 2000 japanese game shit like MIDI and S versions.

Make it full open world please. And I would add a little bit of charm in the game. I actually loved how in VIII you had to decypher the books you read in order to create the weapons.

Yep and most of the soundtrack was actually reused from other games. Of the original tracks, Sylvando's theme is amazing and Rab's music is decent for the recaps, but many of the other tracks are ... kind of just there. Granted even in previous games, Sugiyama didn't mind reusing soundtracks

- The opening theme of DQ2 in Moonbrooke before the attack came from Sugiyama's Gatchaman soundtrack
- The ending credits theme of DQ6 also came from Gatchaman
- DQ7's soundtrack leitmotif is the Cyborg 009 soundtrack leitmotif

I still have both soundtracks. If I had the space I'd upload them along with The Sea Prince and the Fire Child - which sounds so much like Dragon Quest music you could fool someone into thinking they were deleted tracks from DQ games. I will admit his Space Runaway Ideon OST doesn't sound anything like Dragon Quest.

Dragon Quest 6 and 7 were the peak DQ soundtracks IMO.

I agree totally, and I'm an absolute homosexual. Just so tacky.
I don't even know if he's supposed to be gay or just flamboyant and I don't care at all if he is. Technically you can marry every character in the game so... Plot spoilers ---> My issue is that this scenario happened right after the entire world was turned upside-down and a ton of people died. The whole world just went to absolute shit and this weirdo just pops up like it's no big deal with his roving band of idiots. Then I have to dress up like an idiot too and lead a parade for a couple hours as if that will fix things. It was retarded.

I don't expect realism from a JRPG and I do expect certain parts to be lighthearted cringe in a JRPG, in fact I love that about JRPGs. It's not the only time in the game he swooped in and destroyed the mood either. I think the game would have been better if he had been replaced with a some cliche pirate or cliche drunken sea captain (he supplied the boat).

What's wrong with it?
I didn't like the character. He and his reactions to events in the game felt completely out of place. You're obviously more than welcome to like the character though.

Well, I know many people are against it and I can understand why, but I personally would love to have an entirely different soundtrack. Or if possible, the option to toggle between "classic" soundtrack that's been used forever and a "completely new soundtrack".

I'm not sure if I'm the only one, but I never played a Dragon Quest game, because - for the life of me - I can't stand the soundtrack.

Get rid of Koichi Sugiyama ASAP.
You know he doesn't do anything wrong, it's just series tradition to keep the midi shit around but the actual orchestration that they released recently sounds so good. I think it's more of a management thing at that point.

Cel shaded graphics on par akin to Arc Systems level.
Midi music should NEVER be in a modern title. Put the orchestral soundtrack in from the beginning.
Add some twists. I love DQ, but it can be traditional to a fault. Make a ton of new creatures.

Tell me something in XI's soundtrack that even dares to be close to any of these masterpieces:

Obviously I'm not saying they should remove 15 years from Sugiyama, but they can either ask him for more or use a new composer that captures his style well.

You said FFVIII.

I agree that DQVIII is the peak of his career but the man is 90 years old. I don't expect him to reach that point again.

I think DQXI's soundtrack is fitting for the game, and insofar as it's not spectacular it's because it shares some of the flaws of the game as a whole: it's extremely conservative and formulaic, even by DQ standards. The main battle theme is great, though I still prefer VIII's.

My girlfriend got really into JRPGs during quarantine (Ni no Kuni and Persona 3 primarily) and I was pretty sure she was going to like DQXI, but she couldn't get into it because she thought the story was dull. And I can't really blame her. The best DQ stories heavily subvert the "you're the chosen one and you have to defeat the dark lord" trope, but XI's efforts at subversion are extremely tame and halfhearted. For someone new to the series it just comes across as a dumb, uninventive story, at least until the major twist.

Replaying older DQs, it's clear that while the series has always been conservative, it's rarely been this conservative. The best installments, V and VIII, manage to carefully balance a lighthearted, storybook tone with a very serious underlying plot. Compare the major character death that occurs early in V to the character death in XI - did anyone actually care that the latter character dies? I certainly didn't. Whereas in V it came as a genuine shock.

Better Voice actors. That's the only thing I rush through in DQ11. Japanese actors are probably better but my version doesn't have that option.

I really don't like too much change with DQ, the old school aspect is what keeps me interested in them. I feel like the majority of DQ fans feel the same.

A little more strategy for boss battles. DGXI was very easy and only the last boss of the true ending required you to make a strategy with ur characters skills and builds to beat it.
The last boss can beaten in two turns.

Really? I thought the English VA was excellent and on par with DQVIII's also excellent VA.

Yea, it's not like it's obnoxiously bad. Just drags at times when I can read faster and the VA isn't engaging enough for me to listen through. Reminds me of the VA in BOTW. It's not inherently bad, just sounds like something from a budget tier JRPG.
