Whatever happened to that super-expensive PSX system?

Not that I'm in the market for it, but I can't find anywhere to buy it, since amazon.co.jp doesn't ship games to the US (and I can't read the site anyway). Lik-Sang and Estarland had it but it's now unavailable. Is this still being produced?

I just saw it at Yodobashi camera yesterday and I laughed at it..

So what's "special", about this super expensive PSX?

A few things, some of which foreshadowed the PSP:

160 GB or 250 GB hard drive
12x DVD-R drive
Sony MemoryStick slot
Standard progressive-scan output

But those things were largely overshadowed by the $500 price, almost $1000 with the big hard-drive.

Didn't they release an updated version of the PSX but with Memory Stick Duo Pro recording for PSP's? Or am I thinking about some other machine?

Isn't the PS3 gonna be about $400 - $500?

Sony Electronics learned to stay off of Sony Computer Entertainment's turf.

The PSX was a high end DVR, but by including PS2 functiontionality and calling it PSX, potential consumers thought of it as a game console and didn't buy it for that reason. (Sony Electronics even said it could have taken the PS2 out of the PSX and few people would have cared.)

Not that the PSX would have been a big seller even if it had been marketed properly. Reasonably priced DVRs have yet to catch on.

No.

The PSP would of rocked if it had those features.. :D

So the PS3 is going to be cheaper than the full XBox 360? Or do you think it will be more than $500?
It will cost the same as whatever the Xbox 360 is selling for at the time.

The PSX rules for all the wrong reasons.

1) It factually proves that "PSX" is not (repeat: not) nor ever has been the correct acronymn for the original PlayStation.

2) All it takes is those three letters to deflate the Sony hate about how "anything with a Sony label sells (in Japan, etc)".

Whoa, they combined the EE and GS?

I can see why it didn't take off... IMO I see it as a total ripoff.
I'd rather make myself a decent HTPC for like ~$200.

Which xbox 360? Retard Pack or full version?
Yes.

If the Premium Pack significantly outsells the Core Pack, it will cost as much as the Premium Pack. Otherwise, Core Pack price.

That's my guess, anyway.

Those of you expecting the PS3 to sell at a premium compared to the Xbox 360 have forgotten about the concepts of competition and taking big losses to establish a standard, in this case Blu-ray.

"12x DVD-R drive"

bwahahahahahahaahahahaahahahaaaaaaa.

Yeah, unfortunately, sony use a different scale to the rest of the world for drive speeds.
Because let me tell you, that thing is NOT a 12 speed dvd-r burner...

Right. People jump all over this as a colossal failure, but in reality, it was just high-end equipment, and it didn't work out. The idea was good, and the pricing was actually decent (DVD-R/TIVO combos were quite expensive then, and still carry a price tag just outside of mass market appeal), but buying a PS2 this late into the cycle, as part of a premium-priced set-top box, just wasn't a good buy with PS3 on the horizon. I'm a little surprised that gadget-mad Japan didn't get into this at least a little bit, but it would never have flown anywhere else (and was really never announced for release outside of Japan, although Sony had intents.)

If PS3 came along with these same features at launch in a premium pack, I could see getting that. Cost would still be a factor, but it'd make sense (since PS3 probably won't have a HDD in the box) to get at launch a DVR-ready PS3. In my opinion, MS made a mistake in not including video features in the Xbox Value Pack, I think that would have been powerfully valuable to establishing the Premium Pack when budget-conscious buyers are reaching for the disappointing Standard pack, and they could have subsidized the cost with programming subscriptions.
