What's Sony using to counter Xbox 2/Zelda this fall?

This is really the core of your argument, everything else is fluff. And it's not going happen, not this year. Sony's not that shortsighted.

If no other reason than that Sony wants to spite Microsoft and they want to keep retail channels flooded with PSTwo inventory.

It won't affect Microsoft at all. And it could cost Sony hundreds of millions of dollars. For spite.

That's one part of the argument, the other side is perfectly rational too -- you only have a certain amount of time with a console.

Even if the PSTwo sells into 2006/2007, 2005 is without a doubt the last big holiday season the PSTwo has to itself.

You don't seem to want to ignore this.

To maximize sales potential/capability, this holiday season is definitely the time to drop to $99, not in 2006, when retailers will be phasing out PSTwo stock no matter what (PS3 and Revolution has to go somewhere) and the XBox 360 will be probably be cheaper.

A drop to $99 in 2006 will not have the same impact it will have in 2005.

We know absolutely the $99 price point creates a psychological reaction with consumers that causes a surge in sales. The longer the PSTwo is at $99 during its peak years, the better chance it has to sale to its maximum sales potential. This is not just for holiday 2005, but also for the early months of 2006 before the PS3 launches.

Who's to say a $99 PSTwo won't deter consumers from buying something else (even an XBox 360)? Nintendo used this same tactic very successfully towards the end of the SNES lifespan even when it was clear the Genesis was losing steam, to ward off Saturn/Playstation adopters.

By not dropping to $99 this holiday, Sony would be wasting the PSTwo's potential. Who's to say 120 million is some arbitrary roof for hardware sales? Why not 130 or 140 or 150 million? By getting these people you get more potential PS3 customers down the line as well.

I don't. Finally doing away with random battles? Composer from FFT? Ogre Battle dude?

Only good. Only good can come from this.

I completely understand your reasoning, but what if Sony's not planning to release the PS3 until 2007?

its possible, I'm thinking Fall/Winter 2006 for Japan, Spring 2007 for US, I just don't see Sony having the PS3 ready for a Spring 2006 release in Japan

2005 might be the last christmas PSTwo has to itself, but next Christmas there will be no real competition. PS3 and Xbox2 will still be expensive.

If MS are ballsy and cut the price of the Xbox2 in 2006, a drop to $99 for PSTwo is arguably better then to maintain price differential and show the value of PSTwo.

This christmas with maybe an expensive Xbox2, $129 would be fine. Plus it makes sense not to have too much difference between PSTwo and PSP, you don't want to make PSP look too expensive. Next year they have the potential for price cutting that.

Oh that's easily solved, release a PSPHD at 500$+ and the current model will suddenly look awfully cheap :D

Is Xbox2 going to be $300 for sure? Or is the possibility of a $199 launch totally out of the question?

According to Manabyte, yes.

I googled Onimusha 4 and found some confirmation on Computer and Videogames. Apparently Inafune said that he had listened to the fans demanding a new Onimusha and said it would probably come back in some form. No platform stated. But maybe there's new info around I couldn't find.

SOCOM III, Jak, and Soul Calibur 3 are strong enough exclusives for Sony to hold the mantle this holiday season.

Let's not forget that SOCOM II: US Navy Seals is a 2+ million seller and the most popular online game on PS2.

Apparently the reason is because he posted something "inappropriate" in the OT forum, or something similarily ridiculous.

Angst: Try to do a search on Onimusha 4 here at GAF, and I'm sure you'll find something with a bit more substance.

-The Killers
-Killzone 2
-SOCOM III: US Navy Seals
-Shadow of the Colossus
-Genji
-Jak X
-Rachet Deadlocked
-Sly 3
-Killzone 2

-Project S

I just have to laugh at everyone saying Sony will skip $129 in favor of $99.

This is the company that, when MS announced an Xbox cut to $150, still kept PS2 at $179 for a few months, then merely matched the $150 price, even though they could easily afford to undercut MS, force them to match, and make them lose even more money per unit. They put out a new slim system but didn't lower the price a bit, yet still are selling a metric fuckton of 'em.

If they're feeling extraordinarily generous, they'll drop it to $119.

I do think that MS could go for an agressive price on Xenon, that's the whole point of making the HD optional; I'm thinking they could go $250 on the HD-less model, $300-350 on the HD model. HD/media player unit available seperately for $100-120.

:lol :lol :lol You think Sony has to "counter" anything, especially Zelda? :lol :lol You must be so hot that you need a fan. Boy, the heat must be getting to your head.

I still have my doubts... I hated Vagrant Story and this game seems more like Vagrant Story than the oldskool SNES era FF's that I loved so much. Graphics look absolutely gorgeous and Sakamoto makes good music (loved Radiant Silvergun, BOF:DQ and FFT's soundtracks). Not really too sure what to think about the battle system, reminds me a lot of Vagrant Story but I'd prefer something less AI-based. The FFX system or even the old ATB were fine. Well, there's always the MistWalker games...

Well that's your problem, then! We can get to fixin' that right away! :lol

Just kidding. Still, like Imma sayin', nothin' bad can come of this. And no one can tell me otherwise until the game beats me over the head with its shittiness :(

Repeatedly posting a picture of a naked woman is ridiculous? Read the TOS.

I want to know too, I had to go clean it out of the server here at work. The SOB should be banned.

I agree. The thing is, the PS2 has sold much better than the PS1, and the PS1 itself has sold over 25 million just since the launch of the PS2. So I think they have a long back cycle coming up with the PS2, and there's no way the Xbox and GC will be there to challenge them for those budget sales over the next few years. I see no reason for them to try to rush a price drop.

The idea that that would somehow spoil MS's launch is like a game of chicken where they're driving in opposite directions. Sony didn't even rattle the DC launch in the U.S. with the PS1's price drop.

Because I didn't see it. You linked me to his post, and when I clicked on it, all I saw was an edited post saying you suck. I can't ban him if I don't see him do anything wrong.

Also, it's not your position to tell us who to ban and for how long. Doing this usually winds up in you getting banned.
