What's the best alternative to Winamp?

I used to use Winamp until I switched to XMPlay. It seems to be less of a resource hog and works well. There's a Winamp skin for it too if you start to miss the look.

i tried XMPlay a few months back and it's a solid player, but it lacked a media library like in Winamp. Does it have one now, either built in, or via a plugin?

Quentissential Player is from the originol group who first developed WinAmp before selling it to AOL.

I used Q Player for awhile, but Winamp v5.05 just feels like a much more streamlined program. I really don't see a need for an alternate. Now I don't use Winamp to play my videos, for that I go to Media Player Classic .

I prefer playing videos sometimes in Winamp for the EQ.

Personally I am quite fond of CoreMedia player : http://www.corecoded.com/
It's not just a very nice audio player, it's one of the best video players around as well, and lightweight in terms of resources too. Can use winamp plugins as well :P

My only complaint for it is that there's not enough custom skins available :(

Media Player Classic is a very good program! I use it to take snapshots from my avi files I may have, very good reliable program!

Foobar2000 is the closest thing i can think of off the top of my head. It's minimal, and although not pretty, extremely powerful in terms of playlist creation through the use of regular expressions.

Also, browse through these freeware offerings: http://www.nonags.com/nonags/mp3play.html

Agreed.

Foobar easily. I can click on an mp3/flac and have it play almost instantaneously, unlike itunes and winamp (bulky apps). The settings scare me tho, I am afraid I might mess something up.

The most useful thing about Foobar for me has been the ReplayGain options. Having half you collection in FLAC with ReplayGain and other "half" in MP3 means a lot of variations in audio levels. i'll have to see if the standalone ReplayGain app for Winamp works with these tags, because at the moment i don't have time to tweak Foobar. i still don't have my collection organized the way i want, and until i do, tweaking and using Foobar will have to wait.
