Just closed my att.net account unfortunatly my email address closed with it. I have heard good things about gmail but it looks like someone has to invite you. I'd like one preferably where you dont get spammed, and advertised to death.

Smells faintly of rancid stilton.
Since gmail invites are so hard to come by paypal me $20 and I will give you an invite...

just pm me your email and I will invite you

I've used dozens of free e-mail services, and Gmail is the strongest. Hotmail is a close second, but they have too much downtime and the site doesn't play well with Firefox, although I can usually get it to work.

Gmail rocks. I love the message-board layout for reply messages. Makes it REALLY easy to have an email conversation with someone.

Gah!!!!

technically I dont have a email address anymore. I use earthlink now, guess I'll have to open an email account with them first.

Yeah, since signing up to gmail near when it first started, I can't go back to any other service.

Though I do use walla.com solely for junk.

Nope, gotta have an email address. Well I suppose you could just invite a dummy account then give the person the details and let them change the password or whatever..

Is it possible to add an SMTP account to Gmail?

I have two accounts (I use thunderbird for one, gmail for the other) and would love to put them all in gmail (which has the best service, imo).

any idea?

Labels do everything folders do, and then some. They really are a better mechanism.
Except keep those annoying auto-emails from Netflix and other services out of my inbox and out of sight. It's nice that Gmail has a feature to organize mail that's different, but I don't like the clutter.

Just create a filter that sends them to the trash or attaches some label to them. Use "OR" to create a filter that gets rid of different ones at once.

Have you read any emails yet? :lol

I sent myself one from the earthlink account I just opened, to test it. :)

I'll stick with gmail just in case I have to switch ISP's again. I actually switched to earthlink half a year ago but I could not close my att.net account because I was heavily dependant on my att.net email address. So I guess I wasted $120 just for a email address. =/

I don't know what you said in that email, but Gmail has been pretty reliable in sending me ads.

ex: If I send an email that says "hi", I won't get any ads. In an email about summer school, I found ads ranging from "UC Berkeley Guys & Girls" to "Summer Volunteer Abroad".

I've found gmail to be incredible. I'm always telling people to switch. somebody should steal the idea and make a program that uses the same search/labelling for study notes and the like. If there is such a thing, somebody tell me! My notepad is getting outdated.......

Also, get the gmail drive, it's what I use to dump things on for when I'm heading overseas. put important documents in there, retrievable from anywhere.

the adds are pretty non invasive and frequently amusing as well.

The only problem I have with Gmail is it doesn't allow sending or receiving of executables or archives that include executables. For tohse purposes, though, I've used an older Yahoo mail account.

Gmail is absolutely incredible.
Most people mention the amazing storage. Honestly, most people don't need more than 20mb.

It's the incredibly intuitive and slick user interface that makes Gmail so great.

Rename file extension.
Send.
Change back once downloaded.

Bingo!

Well whaddya know. After some free web space I once used started limiting file types and wasn't fooled by such tricks, I didn't think Gmail would be. But nice!

G-mail sounds really good. I always under ther impression that it was the storage that was the big deal. I need to get invite somewhere and make it my main account asap since my old school account will be terminated by the end of this month.
