Even though I am a Nintendo fan, I loved the Sega master system and genesis back in the days. For some reason I found the games to master system slightly more fun than genesis. The Wonderboy games were awesome.

Master System:

1. Wonderboy in monster land
2. YS
3. Zillion
4. Secret Commando
5. Alex Kidd in Miracle World

Genesis (mega drive)

1. Toejam and Earl
2. Wonderboy 3: Monster lair
3. Strider
4. Ys 3: Wanderers from Ys
5. Sonic II

Hell yes... WestOne recently resurfaced, I'd kill for a WonderBoy Collection on GBA. Sega's even got a working SMS emulator for GBA (used in Phantasy Star Collection), they'd just have to port the Genesis versions of MW3-4. :)

TG16 Dragon's Curse had slighty better graphics & audio than the Master System WBIII, but not vastly superior. I have both and played the shit out of the SMS version. didnt play nearly as much of the TG16 upgrade because it seemed basicly the same even with the slight upgrade.

well, ok, vastly was mainly only going to Ys, but WBIII (or IV depending on how you look at it) does look better on the TG-16 and IIRC the two were only a year'ish apart so if you didn't get to WBIII on the SMS within that year playing it on the TG-16 made more sense.

SMS
1. Phantasy Star
2. Govellius: Valley of Doom
3. Shinobi
4. R-types
5. WonderBoy III: The Dragon's Trap
..Two other favorites are Rastan and reggie Jackson Baseball

Genesis
1. Mickey mouse Castel of illusion
2. Phantasy Star series ( I know this is cheating but I couldn't decide which I liked best Phantasy Star 2 or 4.)
3. Landstalkers
4. Shinobi 3: Ninja Maters
5. Gunstar Heroes
Thier are so many other games I wanted to list. :(

In no order

Thunderforce IV
Sonic 3 w\ Sonic & Knuckles
Streets of Rage 3
Shinobi 3
Splatterhouse 3

I tore into Shinobi 3 like I tore into Metal Slug 3 earlier this year, attempting to master quick and cool runthroughs. I meant to make movies and upload them.

TG16 Dragon's Curse also had a heroine for a change. Girl power!

The audio was much better too, though the visual difference was mainly more colors iirc.

Yeah, I loved how you had to go through all the rooms killing the "fake" Draculas until you got to the real one.

Plus the music for fighting Dracula was awesome. It was truly a great action, platformer.

Either you never played any SMS games back in the day or you have bad taste in games... :p

Anyway - top five SMS games:

Zillion - played the fock out of this game over and over... though Apple's sex alludes me to this day...

Phantasy Star - made me a fan of RPGs.

Alex Kidd in Miracle World - Mario killa! (sort of).

WonderBoy 2 in Monster World - LOVED this game - better then Dragons Trap IMO

Kung Fu Kid - Easy as cake, but really fun.

(honarble mention: Rtype, Kenseiden, Rescue Mission, Golvellius)

For the Genny:

Phantasy Star 2 - Best in the series IMO

ThunderForce 3 - Beat this on hard level, without losing a life (obviously played it a lot)

Revenge of Shinobi - with the Spiderman/Batman boss that was later removed.

M.U.S.H.A. - One of my favorite shooters.

Gunstar Heroes - Dont even get me started - best. game. ever.

(Too many more to name - but Beyond Oasis and Mystic Defender get special props.)

Master System:

1. Wonderboy in monster land
2. YS
3. Zillion
4. Secret Commando
5. Alex Kidd in Miracle World

- I thought I had EVERY SMS game..but I dont recall Secret Commando - any info on it?

Top Five SMS:

1) Wonderboy in Monster Land
2) Golvellius and the Valley of Doom
3) Shinobi
4) Wonderboy III
5) And, of course, the Maze Game

Good to see all the Wonderboy in Monster Land love here. I played the living hell out of that game and still drag the system out occasionally for a quick run through. And, I recently acquired Zillion and Ys; I'm looking forward to finally getting the chance to play these classics. (Okay, okay, there's always MAME, but it's just not quite the same.)

I can't recommend Y's I&II for the TG-16 high enough... really, it is worth getting a TGCD just for those two. the CD-music to this day is some of the greatest game music of all time.. god.. I would go through random encounters forever on that game just to listen to the music..
