like if you see that a character in a movie that is a big smoker, and you see them smoke in film, does the actor have to smoke real cigerretes or whatever? or really have to get drunk?

ive been curious about htis for a while

If smoke comes out of their nose or their mouth while talking, then you know it's for real. Sometimes they just suck it into their mouth without inhaling.

... and the male actor has a sock on his unit.

So do 5% of the viewing audience...

Cigarettes maybe, but alcohol definitely not.

Even on no-budget/indie films, they'll get grape juice or something else that looks like liquor for the actor to drink.

Exactly. Iced tea, flat cola, and grape juice are the liquids you usually see actors drinking. Not easy to direct drunk actors...Ask Billy Wilder!

lol what if some of the actors get addicted to smoking after the shoots
It happens. I crave a cigarette now and then and I've only smoked on stage.

Yeah, it's against the rules to have alcohol on a movie set. Pretty much anyone would get their hand sawed if caught drinking at the job, same for an actor.

being the key phrase here.

Tell that to Michael Madsen. Zing!

you can tell if someone isn't inhaling in a movie and it's usually apple juice or some other fruit juice that they are drinking. apple juice is always white wine though because it fizzles when you poor it.

I've always wondered this about when people smoke weed in movies. I've always wondered if it's really weed.

But then I tell myself that probably not...as it's weed, so it's illegal.

What about being shot? Do they use a real gun and just take them straight to the hospital?

you know, when i was little, i used to think arnold and stallone were really killing the people in their movies. I thought they had to be some of the bravest people in the world to actually go through with it.

Damn, I was f*cking dumb.

You can tell when they use herbal cigarettes because they produce much less and weaker smoke than the real thing. Of course, they're not addictive nor do they cause cancer.

In Good Night, and Good Luck they actually used pipe tobacco rolled into cigarettes because it gave off a better looking smoke.

Probably a silly ass question, but when actors snort cocaine in a movie, what are they snorting? I should google that shit.

I think it's usually washing powder.

If you get the collectors editon on platoon, it has extras and in an interview with William Dafoe, he recalls how stoned they got while smoking on set.

Michael Madsen from the set of Bloodrayne says hey.

In the old days, yes. Connery was really smoking as Bond. Today, no. Herbal cigarettes. As for booze, who knows.

Just in case it hasn't been clarified, in many movies the cigar/cigarettes are simply fake, sometimes just herbal leaves, etc. Michael Clarke Duncan used an herbal cigar in Daredevil.

I always wondered if in Animal House did he drink that whole pint of whatever Otter threw at him...I mean knowing that actors personal history it really wouldn't be out of the norm.

actually I have heard that they use real cigarettes in a lot of movies. Some actors that have quit in real life get hook again because they played a character who smokes, or they turn down roles because they smoke...
