Where is my god damn VR!!!!

Doc Holliday

SPOILER: Columbus finds America
OK what the fuck happeend to VR technology? Now the we actually have the tech to provide realistic worlds and interaction no one seems interested. Buddy of mine brought up Battlefield 2...wtf, imagine playing that thing with a VR helmet. I could shoot and look in different directions. Get on it you lazy bastards!

It's funny .. in 1992, I would have said "We will have VR by 2000, no problems." Because alot of focus and research was heading that way. Now, in 2005, I wonder if I will see something that is worthwhile in the next 20 years.

I don't even care about head tracking or virtual manipulation with gloves, etc..

What I want is a headset that will a) fill my field of vision and b) offer me 3D depth perception by differing the images seen with each eye. I can use a standard controller or mouse/KB to control it with.

I would absolutely love to play the intro to Half-Life 1 with this type of setup. A true you-are-there feeling.

okay
you guys need to clue yourself up a bit.

A human version of the classic arcade game Pacman, superimposing the virtual 3D game world on to city streets and buildings, is being developed by researchers at Singapore.

Head tracking is easy enough to achieve and is part and parcel of VR technology anyway.

Infact, the lack of feedback can cause a good deal of quesiness using this kinda stuff.

No, seriously though, VR as cool as it is, ultimately falls short of been really practical technology.

OTOH, augmented reality is where its at, overlaying computer graphics over the real world; either providing a full field of vision (i.e. VR), or displaying floating screens as if they were located in the real world; moving your head around would cause them to track naturally.

Similar in practice to floating screen tech from sci-fi movies/series such as Minority report and Nadesico.

That's the shit I'm talking about.

It's a bit primitive yet, but when this stuff matures into consumer tech, it really will revolutionize the usage of computers like nothing else before it.

I mean, the applications are limitless... anywhere you think information can be useful, this technology can be useful.

HUDs when travelling around; in combination with GPS, internet, and voice technology; Ask where the closest asian restaraunt is, and you might get a map in the bottom left of your FOV, arrows indicating when to turn left or right along the streets, distance to those turns and distance to the actual restaraunt, as well as the restaraunt been highlighted.

For business or office work; multiple large resizable floating displays that costs as much as one headset for each office worker.

Even the economics is good, given the decreased size of the standard display (relative to a TV), shipping cost goes down as well as manufacturing and raw cost of goods. Keep an eye out for this technology.

Bah, I want VR..I dont want that reality overlay crap. We would have to go outside to play, who wants that!?

You guys aen't getting something... Head tracking with a really good VR system will solve camera problems once and for all...

I think they need to shoot for 120FPS personally. I mean if there is any lag at all your gonna get motion sickness. 1080p is a good start...but it needs to be a dedicated display technology with some serious resolution and refresh rate and some dead solid perfect head tracking.. then it's over baby, video games the way they were ment to be played.

That's a great idea and it's coming sooner or later.. When we were kids we would play army in the backyard... our kids' kids will be playing army in the backyard but with CGI people playing back.

They shifted focus and are now concentrating on Augmented Reality. VR Pac Man (posted above) being one of the early examples from academia. You could say it's the next version of VR, a fusion of reality with simulated environments.

Further VR research could easily be tacked on with the development of AR, after all it’s the same principle but on a less complicated scale. I could see it becoming a side effect from all the government and large cooperate research in AR, a cheap and commercially viable substitute if you will.

On the plus side its still being widely used in simulation and medicinal industries along with the usual random entry that crops up ever so often in the entertainment sector.

you need fast head tracking - ideally faster than your screen update. 120fps would be good. I'm sure technology will be much better now.

Then you need fast screen refresh - 60fps minimum. These two will help avoid motion sickness

I don't think you need super hires, or stereoscopic vision. Stereo vision can induce headaches by dislocating your eyes' focus. And depth perception is only of real value for picking things up - beyond 10 feet or so its of limited use. Gameplay mechanics can be used instead to get around that.

So one nice widescreen 1280x720 LCD view, covering your field of vision with fast headtracking. Lovely.

Sony released a VR-headset for PS2 in japan, with a flightsimulator. Thats the only game i know off that supports the headset.
It was complete with headtracking and stereovision.
