Where the reprints came from

Interesting, I think it's good when these games get reprinted. Let more people enjoy them and play them, who cares about the profiteers on ebay.

That's cool of them. They're definitely doing a service to gamers. Scew collectors and Ebayers whining about game value going down

Exactly. Last time I checked, gaming was primarily about/founded on enjoyment, not profiting on the second-hand market.

I have all the games, but in terms of collecting, if you've still got white-labeled copies of these games, their value is still substantial.

The only thing that bothered me about all this is they flat out lied at first where these reprints came from and that Atlus found some leftover stock! I'm sure early on they price gouged on ebay before people realized what was going on. But oh well I do look forward to their future reprints :)

Same here, they originally claimed that and were selling copies for outrageous prices, then later said it was a reprint and lowered their prices, very shady.

Same.

I have a good number of "rare" games, but do not feel threatened by GQD like some people do. I'd rather have other people enjoying Rez than me feeling SPECIAL about it.

In before sonarrat. (Just teasing.)

As a game collector who has no sealed games and who likes playing the games in my collection, I couldn't ask for a better business model. Kudos to them.

Did they do reprints of Exile, Cosmic Fantasy, and Sega Ages, or are they planning to? Would they just sell those on eBay? I don't think GameStop or other retailers will buy those in bulk...

Yes.

What’s next in 2006 for the publisher/retailer? Recently they purchased the now defunct Working Designs’ remaining inventory. Copies of Growlanser: Generations Deluxe Edition, and Silhouette Mirage can be picked up. What’s really surprising is a number of extremely rare titles like Sega Ages for the Saturn, Exile, and Cosmic Fantasy 2 for Turbo Graphix 16. They’re currently in talks with Square-Enix, Atari and Konami for more reprints. It’s possible that reprints of Valkyrie Profile, Ikaruga and Suikoden II may pop up eventually. Collectors take note, Game Quest Direct said that they would try to reprint any game that goes on eBay for over $100. On the bright side a second chance to check out gaming glory benefits a large number of gamers out there.

Simple, Game Quest Direct is selling them directly to Gamestop. A representative spokesperson has said that they decided to unload a sizeable amount of inventory to Gamestop at a bulk price.

Thats the first thing that popped into my head as well. Only, I don't think Sega would allow it...I get the impression that they've always loved the hardcore and highly sought after niche that PDS has garnered...The same with Radiant Silvergun. Still I hope I'm wrong. PDS is one of my favorites of all time and I would gladly pay a reasonable amount for it...but $100.00+, no way.

It's actually something different. It appears that in all honesty, Sega hates money.

Funny that this gets posted today. I just discovered Games Quest Direct last night and am going to check out one of their stores today.

Thats pretty cool, I guess that also explains the reprint of Cubivore (I own an original copy).

It would be nice if they said SOMETHING to seperate the original print and the reprint, like their company logo. Oh well.

This is just really weird though:

"However since Gamestop sells used copies of these games at a higher price they’ve taken the liberty of unsealing and selling the brand new game as a used copy."

Thats just stupid. Why not up the price of the new game in the Gamestop store?

I take a lot of pride in my game library, but I wholeheartedly agree with this. I'm going to be cheering these GQD guys on. It's great that more people get to enjoy these hard-to-find titles at realistic prices. Screw the ebayers.

No idea, but the explains why I saw so many like-new rare titles just opened in the various shipments when I worked there. It made no sense to me.

What's up with all the "screw the eBayers" comments, anyway? eBay makes things available, not keeps them from being available.

This isn't to say that I feel sorry for people whose games are dropping in value -- part of being a collector or a speculator is understanding what you're collecting or dealing in, and staying on top of fluctuations in the market.

But if not for sites like eBay, it's unlikely you'd be able to find rare games for any price.

Its not that. its people who buy up rare games and don't play them, just sit on them.

I think its more of the people who bought said rare game only to hock it at an inflated price, that are now crying that their plan has backfired due to supply = demand

screw THOSE PEOPLE.

I'd assume the white labels aren't on the games as kevtones mentioned a few posts back.

What's a what label?

I would think the security seals would be the real tester. Unless a white label is the security seal. :lol

Good thing new games these days don't come with the security sticker.

How come SCEA doesn't use the shrinkwrapping method done on JP PS2 games, where there is a Sony band string in the shrinkwrapping? That way you know it is the official shrinkwrapping and not a reshrinkwrap.

Are there enough of these people to actually make a dent in the supply-demand chain though? Once a game becomes rare, it's, you know, rare. How many copies are they seriously taking out of the market?

As someone who collects games to play them and/or complete insane collections, I don't mind reprints, really...

Although if I become a bit more insane, I could see myself trying to get a copy of both the original AND the reprint.

Sigh.

Luckily, I'm not that bad... yet.

Except that the article says they usually front $100,000 to start as it's an investment to them, and they are unlikely to recoup the money as PDS is on a console that's two generations old?

Well, that didn't stop them from reprinting Persona 2: EP and Rhapsody.
