Where's my damn PARASITE EVE sequel, Square?

... or at least a "spiritual successor" of sorts, as apparently you no longer have license to use the original novel.

(Weren't you still allowed to use the name, though?)

After all these years, there's nothing like the Parasite Eve games when it comes to combining JRPG and survival horror (technically we can also include Koudelka, but that's also another PS1 era title that has been unfortunately lost to time). Not to mention that big sis Aya would be a sight for sore eyes in these days of ugly gender-dysphoric lumps of flesh.

Just imagine what a modern PE game would be like. Hell, even taking the gameplay base of The 3rd Birthday and develop it further, while removing the terrible plot would do nicely.

Most of the orignal devs are probably long gone

I don't quite understand why people want sequels to old games when the original developers are no longer involved.

The first two games are the best I have played. We don't speak of that other abomination. I would love 1 and 2 to come back if not as remakes, then a remaster collection.

Where is my Bravely Default 1 for Switch, Square?

Truth be told developers are the replaceable gears of the engine, they don't need to be the same to obtain worse, similar or better game, as long as the director (same or different) has the right ideas it should work out.

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
Vagrant Story's combat system is kind of a successor. More than its actual sequels were at least. But yep, great classic JRPG showing they don't all have to be sci-fantasy or whatever & can take place in the modern or any other era too (like Yakuza did later as well). Sublime game, sad for the sequels.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
The original game's turn based combat using modern weapons (movement, reload mechanics, etc.) was sublime. We need more games like that, regardless of whether they're called Parasite Eve or not.

Step 1: Release HD Remaster Trilogy (cause despite the haters, 3rd Birthday is a neat game.)
Step 2: Actually.... so long as I get step 1, I'm good.

I would love to see Parasite Eve be given the same treatment as the recent Soul Reaver and Tomb Raider remasters.

If they make it, I just hope it takes place in 1998 like the original. That was so much of its charm.

Maybe a dumb nitpick but I hated in FF VII Remake how they had smartphones + touch screens everywhere.

It's because they don't know or are not acknowledging that x devs are gone.

Hell yeah i want a Legend of Dragoon Remake, but then I wonder whether the original team is around still.

It was called the 3rd Birthday on PSP.

Seriously though, I would love to see these games remastered to see if there is interest in a new one! Action RPG Horror would be a unique genre with only a few different types of entries.

It would have to be called The 4th Birthday and be made by an entirely new team since Square Enix currently doesn't have a horror dev team IIRC.

Also, right now SE is in survival mode, because all they're doing is making games based on popular franchises, making HD-2D games, and remastering everything else. They would need their own Resident Evil and Street Fighter success stories in order to start experimenting and taking big chances.

Takashi Tokita is still at SE, Yoshihiko Maekawa while working with Nintendo was involved with Fantasian: Neo Dimension recently
Hironobu Sakaguchi was only a producer so no big lost there.
Tetsuya Nomura is obviously still at SE.
And Takashi Tokita did the writing & directing
So no they pretty much all still there except the producer which means very little.
They could easily do remake.

If you want a legal reason why: supposedly the original author of the books hated how Square-Enix butchered the games later on, so they have refused to work with Square-Enix on providing the license.

Therefore, Square-Enix can't legally touch the IP again until they patch things up with the author. Considering what happened with 3rd Birthday, I'd probably had been wary of letting SE touch the IP again too. But I think current SE would be smarter & more respectful with the IP than they were with 3rd Birthday.

I’d love to see a remake of the first game, definitely one of my favorites of all time. Wouldn’t mind seeing more Koudelka for that matter but Parasite Eve seems way more likely.

Save it! I’m the biggrst advocate for a sequel. Where’s my 4K post-apocalyptic New York enveloped in snow? It’s gotten so bad I’ve generated AI concepts, I don’t give a shit.

In truth Square Enix killed the IP with 3rd Birthday and the discourse with Hideaki Sena didn't help either. It really is a shame they let such a unique combat system with low poly graphics with a surreal atmospheric vibe go to waste. People cry for remakes but I'd rather they just port it untouched or just remastered with very minor QoL. Similar to how they handled porting it to PSP via being a on PSN as a PS Classic title.

Far far too old. It needs a reboot, with actual remake (akin to resident evil) first. Delight the old fans, but be a great start point for new players. Once they’ve done the remakes of the old ones, including third birthday, then they can move onto a new entry.

Edit: just been reading, sounds like it’s in copyright hell. Square don’t own it, the publisher of the book did, and they refused new games etc. that publisher collapsed and absorbed by another, and seems no interest in granting the license. Square own the character but that’s about it. It’s also super niche.🤷‍♂️

Square enix killed it with 3rd birthday, i prefer whatever left of squaresoft just leave this game alone rather than remake it to suit their "modern audience"

I've always wanted to try the original duology,

I've only played 3rd birthday and I thought it was a fun game, the first game I'd played with the whole switch bodies mechanic. Teenage me also really liked how the clothes changed when taking damage lol

Parasite eve recently showed up in one of square's mobile games so I don't think that's really an issue.

I believe there are long-standing issues with the license - its based on a Japanese novel after all- which are likely keeping its chances of a revival down.

I live just fine with the memory of the first 2 and with modern square staying the fuck away from the franchise.

I'm even terrified at the idea of a remake after the ff7 remilks.

You played the worst one by a gigantic margin.

2 and especially 1 is where the real shit is.

Yeah after 3rd birthday I started watching a playthrough of the first one and stopped 15 minutes in because it looked way too interesting. I'll get to it one day, but I don't want to deal with emulator bs right now...

The license issue is meaningless, just wrote something “inspired” by it and don’t use the name. Not like there aren’t a bunch of derivatives of existing IP …

SYMBIOGENESIS wouldve been perfect
