Where's the PSP RPGs Sony?!

Seriousely, this has to be the biggest problem with the PSP.

You have a system that I think would be great for RPGs (cause of the media capacity), and there's not a single RPG out there (untold legends is more hack n slash than RPG) and looking at eb's list, there's none upcoming.

I know we're getting popocropolis translated eventually, but I heard that's pretty blah.

...and we will eventually get that FFVII spin-off, but there's two problems with that... A) 2006 at least... B) It's a FFVII spin-off instead of an original title or original FF...

Anyways, I'm very disappointed in this aspect of my PSP and needed to vent about it.

I really hope some people announce some RPGs for NA release soon. Sony needs to push the 3rd party developers into getting some games out. Pull a Nintendo and use the PS2 as leverage to get development for PSP (Nintendo was using GBA for GCN in the beginning)

Until then, Lumines, MGA, movies and GBASP (which currently has Tactics Ogre: KoL in it, which is the best game on gameboy still).

DS doesn't have any RPGs either.

I already have FFIIIj through other means.

Castlevania is tempting, and I may pick up a DS for that.

So what else is there (that actually has screenshots and such).

Exact same problem I have with the system and I ain't buying it until I see some decent RPG's. AND NO, UNTOLD LEGENDS IS NOT DECENT >_<

That's coming in July for Japan. After how Untold Legend sold i'm sure Sony and others can see there's an obvious market there for these games.

This thread couldn't wait until after E3? I'm sure the RPGs will come.

Advance Wars 2 is the best game on the GBA. What's wrong with you?

The ghosting is coming, the ghosting is coming!

That looks interesting SSX, but what's the chances of it coming over here? and even if it does, 6 months later.

Also, the point of this is I can return to this thread after E3 and be like "whoo! rpgs!" or "boo! no rpgs! sony sucks"

and tactics ogre: kol is the best gba game :p

I don't get it :(

Popolocrois is hitting us soon/eventually, I do believe. I am enjoying it, even though my reading is slow (japan, furigana plz thx).

So it's not bad? well that's good.

What's it like? could you give me kind of a two line description...and knowing my favorite kind of games (suikoden, xenogears, final fantasy, valkyrie profile, etc)...would I enjoy the type of game?

You're going to have to wait on RPGs for the PSP like the PS2. It took a while before any good ones came out. PSP rpg development times are going to be longer and more expensive than kicking out a sprite-based rpg. It's like the PSP is almost too powerful for it's own good when it comes to attracting developers. Developers usually go to handhelds when they want a cheaper project to draw in cash. PSP requires a huge budget. With that said, the rpgs will probably flood in in a couple of years.

Now out of all those games, which actually have a release date and media released? :p

you can pull announced games for any system and it'll look great, but there's a good chunk that don't get released, and a bunch don't come out for a while.

You got punk'd. Now face it and move on

What Atlus needs to do is get around to showing Persona and Princess Crown. Those were announced awhile back and we still don't have any media or any info on them.

Dark Cloud wasn't too bad, but yeah.

Now PSX, that had a good RPG release schedule for the first bit. I mean Suikoden and Final Fantasy VII demo (which came with a suprisingly good game called Tobal no.1).

I'm not sure when Wild Arms came out, but I think it came out early too.

Plus we always had...Beyond the Beyond to play *cough*

Well I enjoy all those as well, so there ya go. Outside of battles, its standard fare, but the battles are pretty interesting since they're SRPG-ish. Only main issues I have are the ghosting being annoying at times, and the loading can take a while, but what can you do.

but you didn't answer my question, give me a release date and/or media for them and I'll consider them actually going to be released :p

otherwise, games like "xenosaga ds", if they even come out, could just be a card game.

How long did it take for the PS2 to get credible and decent RPGs through it's life-time?

Yeah, PS2 sucked for RPGs for the first year or so.

...but, the whole backwards compatible thing for us RPGamers was huge. I know until Final Fantasy X was released, I barely even played any PS2 games. It was all PSOne games on my PS2.

If it wasn't for backwards compatibility, I may have been totally hating on my ps2

What? The PSX was released in '94 in Japan, '95 in the US. Suikoden came out in November '96 (as did the FF7 demo, I think) and Wild Arms hit in April, '97. There wasn't much until '97 and it was '98 before the floodgates opened.

Square didn't even announce FF7 until January '96. That was a full 13 months after the Japanese launch of the PSX. Just something to keep in mind.

Ahhh, that's why! I wasn't interested in a Playstation until I read in gamepro (old school) that FFVII was coming to PSX.

*big list*

thanks to Jarrod ^^
Well, to be fair, a handful of those aren't RPGs. :P

I'm pretty sure jarrod made a note of that when posting the list, by saying there were Strategy, Adventure, etc games mixed in the lot.

How the hell did he get punked? He was right.

Well, "credible and decent" is pretty subjective, but this is about what it had to start (US releases):

Launch Window:
Eternal Ring
EverGrace
Orphen: Scion of Sorcery
Summoner

Spring-Summer 2001:
Dark Cloud
Ephemeral Fantasia
Okage: Shadow King
Warriors of Might & Magic

Fall-Winter 2001/2002:
Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance
Drakan: The Ancients' Gates
Final Fantasy X
Forever Kingdom
Grandia II
Jade Cocoon II
Shadow Hearts
The Legend of Alon D'ar
Tsugunai: Atonement
Wizardry: Tale of the Forsaken Land

So yeah, the releases were pretty skimpy at first -- certainly nothing there that'll set the world on fire, that's for sure. There were a couple good games in the mix, though, so at least it wasn't a total loss. But true enough, the quality releases didn't really start pouring in until around a year after launch, ...and they haven't stopped yet. :)

And as for PSP, so far it's looking like (again, US releases):

Launch Window:
Rengoku: The Tower of Purgatory
Untold Legends: Brotherhood of the Blade

Rest of 2005:
NeoPets: PetPet Adventure: The Wand of Wishing
PoPoLoCrois Story: Prince Pietro's Adventure

...Sadly, that's everything with a confirmed US release this year. Hopefully E3 sheds some light on some other titles, as there are a handful of them (Gagharv Trilogy series, Tales of Eternia, Tenchi no Mon, etc) either out in Japan already or hitting really soon. And it'll be a shame if none of those end up coming over.

Ok I'll just chip in to support whoever posted that Tenchi no Mon image. That'll be the FIRST original IP Japanese action RPG for the PSP. Hopefully Climax delivers because it's looking really good. I'll definitely be picking it up in July. :D

It's a sony product so expect a bunch of RPG's. Just like every other system you are just going to have to be patient and wait with the rest of us too see what games are coming out for what systems. It's only been out for a couple months so sit tight.

I hope someone translates Gagharv trilogy once all three are out, and improve the load time.

The second one supposedly already has great improvements in load time, so that's not beyond the realm of possibility.

this is why you don't buy a system at launch, but only when there are games out worth playing...

Well, it all depends on titles out and looking at the games to see what interestes you. If the only thing you want and play is RPG's and you see one tops, then yea common sense should kick in. Most people who have broader interests though have been pretty satisfied from who i've talked to and friends. Between Lumines, Hot Shots, ATV, Wipeout, Ridge Racer and Darkstalkers I have been pretty satisfied. When I do get bored of those I have my friends copies of MGA, Untold Legends and Dynasty Warriors to try out. I've heard MLB is pretty popular too but i'm not quite a sports person, those people are probably even more happier right now.
