Which decade for music?

So there's this show in the UK at the moment called the UK Music Hall of Fame - each week they're doing a different decade, last night was the 70's and it struck me how many awesome bands there were then.

Here's the deal: The Beatles, Madonna, Bob Marley, Elvis Presley and U2 all make it as the "founding members." There are then 10 artists from each decade whom the public vote on, the artist with the most votes (from each decade) gets in.

Starting with the 90's:

Blur
Missy Elliot
Oasis
Radiohead
Prodigy
Nirvana
Dr Dre
Robbie Williams
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Spice Girls

The 80s:

Bruce Springstein
Beastie Boys
George Michael
Guns n Roses
Joy Division
Michael Jackson
Prince
Public Enemy
REM
The Smiths

The 70s:

Abba
Bee Gees
The Clash
David Bowie
Elton John
Led Zeppelin
Pink Floyd
Queen
Sex Pistols
Stevie Wonder

It's hard to pick *one* from each decade but I just think it's a lot tougher for the 70s. Clash, Led Zep and The Clash all deserve to be in and I wouldn't say no to Queen or Bowie's inclusion either.

I know it's down to taste but seeing it last night kind of put it into perspective for me. What do you lot think about it? Who would you put in? Who's been left out? (rememebr it's a UK poll so there's gonna be some skew)

Missy Elliot? Hell no. She didn't really hit it big until 2001 anyway. Write in Pearl Jam or 2Pac.

I'd say '65-'75 was the Golden Age of popular music.

Velvet Underground
Can
Neu!
Brian Eno (got his start in this time frame)
Bob Dylan
Love
MC5
David Bowie
T. Rex
Kraftwerk
Frank Zappa

Shit, the list could go on. But just take a look at those bands above. Just wow.

Having said that, I am more partial to the '80's. =P

WTF, no Smashing Pumpkins or Sonic Youth? But they can put in Robbie Williams. Right. :lol

Anyway, if I were to pick one from each:

90's: Radiohead
80's: REM
70's: Led Zeppelin

I didn't grow up in the 80s (born '88) but I prefer the 80s, I just love the style and attitude and Morrissey.

EDIT: Oh, one from each decade...lemme see:

The 90's: Radiohead
The 80s: The Smiths
The 70s: Pink Floyd

I am a fan of 76-86. From the birth of Punk and New Wave to some serious 80's greatness like the Smiths and early U2 and REM.

And Elvis Costello is missing from the list! I would pick him over the Clash, but would regret being able to pick only one of the two.

PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS oh god i am drowning in them
The 90's:
Red Hot Chili Peppers

The 80s:
REM

The 70s:
Pink Floyd

80s was particularly tough.

'90s: Blur. Yup, Blur. They're as enjoyable to me today as the day I first heard them. Each album they've released has been fun, interesting, or great. Honestly, I think they're way better than Radiohead. Yup. BETTER THAN RADIOHEAD.

That '90s list is kind of gross when all is said and done, though. But Blur is really deserving of winning that either way.

Also, Oasis sucks.

90s: Blur - Their stuff of late hasn't been all that great, except for three unbelievably phenomenal tracks on the otherwise abyssmal 13, but that wasn't till '99 and on. Everything before then is gold.

80s: Michael Jackson - An amazingly easy pick. The only other one on the list that could compete is Prince.

70s: David Bowie - Really just my personal favorite. I could just as easily give the nod to Led Zep, Queen, The Clash, and Stevie Wonder without so much as batting an eye.

And Elvis Costello is missing from the list! I would pick him over the Clash, but would regret being able to pick only one of the two.
I agree. Elvis Costello never quite gets the respect he deserves.

the 60's and the 70's wer ethe prime expression of Rock n roll. Then the 80's fucked everything up. It was the big come down after all of the drugs they did in the 60's and 70's. Nobody knew what the fuck they were doing anymore.

Supertramp, you fucks! :(

*sigh*
WITHOUT Supertramp in the 70's, I'll go
90's: Radiohead
80's: Joy Division
70's: David Bowie, but The Clash is on his ass.

What are thre three phenomenal tracks? Tender, Coffee and TV, and ? I mean, the album was seriously my favorite thing ever when it came out, but I'm just looking for perspective.

70s: Clash, when i was younger i'd have EASILY picked zeppelin, but nowadays Clash is a lot more meningful to me.
80s: The Cure of course, but since they are not in the list (wtf?), i'll go with The Smiths.
90s: STP is easily my favorite band of the 90's...and not sure if I agree with most of the choices here, but I'll pick RHCP from the list.
