War planes were seen flying overhead and security cars rushed away from the building. Reporters in the White House were told to move to a more secure location.

That was really odd; I fired up my browser and I see the headline on NYT. I reload it following the last post and the time changes on the headline to one minute later, with the headline changed to "People Returning to White House Following Evacuation".

These types of events seem to happen a lot more frequently these days...

I think the opposite could have easily happened. After a series of laws, governmental reorgs, etc. terrorists struck again and would have been successful even considering all of our heightened security. I doubt even the republicans could have swung that into a net positive.
