Who else can't play Half-Life 2?

Drivers no good?
Weaksauce PC?
Does Steam hate you?

This is the place to come and cry in your beer.

Me: The game freezes as soon as I get off the train. All of my drivers and Direct X are up-to-date. Mike was nice enough to buy me the game as a B-day gift on the first day, but I still haven't actually played it.

My PC is shit so I can't play it. A guy in the office here plays it on every lunch break, though, and couple of us always gather around to watch. The game looks really great.

I can't play it until Valve releases a patch that fixes the stuttering :(
Had it an hour after release and I've only played 10min.

I can't play it either-my PC is weak sauce and old.

Xenon version will be nice though. I guess I'm not in any rush to play it either since I've got a backlog on all 3 console platforms that's quite large.

I cant because it gives me horrible motion sickness, worse than anything I have played. The 30 second load screens every 5 minuets help a bit though.

My PC is above the minimum spec, but I'd like to wait until I've built a PC capable of running it with all settings at max with flying colors. No skin off my back.

That's where some of my frustration comes from. I already upgraded for Doom 3, but I guess I'll need to upgrade even more to get Half Life 2 working right.

My PC is pretty much the exact same as the recommended specs. I just can't play it because of money issues and I know I shouldn't be absorbing myself into a big game now.

Creaky PC here. If there's ever a demo released, I'll check it out, but until that point I'm just going to assume that there's no way that I'll be able to run the thing.

I have to admit that the game looks very interesting and that only this and stalker have pulled some signals on my radar (I don't like FPS).
Unfortunatelly my PC is crap.

I`m not gonna even try to play this game. My PC is good enough but I`m sure there`ll be lots of problems that eventually fuck up my PC. Hearing all the trouble people are having I`m staying away.

I`m sure it will come out to consoles anyway eventually.

Steam has an update. If you're having problems, you might want to look into it.

Steam Client Update Released
November 19, 2004, 3:03 pm · valve

A small number of Half-Life 2 customers have been experiencing problems while playing the game, and we have traced these issues to corrupt Steam cache files. We've released a Steam update to help resolve these issues. If you have been experiencing problems such as crashing during gameplay or startup of Half-Life 2, please restart Steam and then click on one of the links below. Steam will then automatically verify your cache files. The verification process will take roughly five minutes to complete.

We're also investigating a solution for the sound skipping problems a small number of users are running into. We'll have a solution for this as soon as possible.

I hope they or someone else updates the AI in this game. Very poor for what you would think Half Life 2 would offer. My biggest gripe about the game. Other than that. Very solid.

EDIT: fuck, beaten

Weaksauce PC. :(

Hopefully the income tax return will be fat enough to solve the problem though, leading to much HL2/CS Source next semester, since surely Halo 2, GTA:SA, Shadow Hearts 2, Fable, MGS3, Metroid Prime 2, Pikmin 2, etc. will all have lost their luster.

I'm honestly not missing it is the wierd thing. Too many other games to play and school work to do.

Well, if its any consolation, when you finally get it working, it is sooooo worth it!

I need to upgrade my PC. I'm dying to play the game, but I'm balking at the $200 for the upgrade+game. Especially since I mainly game on consoles.

When I first tried to run the game I experienced terrible slow down, poor frame rate, and weird graphics glitches (missing textures, oil-slick looking weirdness on the floors walls, etc) all running at the lowest settings. I thought I was SOL. Decided to try cleaning up my drivers. Uninstalled the old drivers and ran a driver-cleaner, installed the latest drivers and the latest directx...bingo, a thing of beauty.

The game runs fine with the suggested settings. Granted, I keep AA off and use simple reflections but the game still looks wunderbar. Runs at a decent frame rate too.

BTW, I have a 2GHz Athlon and the much maligned GeforceFX 5600 (256 MB of VRAM).

A friend of mine has a GeForce4 MX with about the same CPU speed as I do and he said it was running fine for him as well.

Before plunking down cash for a new card try a little housekeeping first.

Finished upgrading my PC (including 21" monitor and Logitech 680's), registered my ATI voucher, waited months on end (spending a bit of time dabbling with Counter-Strike: Source) and then ended up booking a trip for the two weeks after it came out.

Got four and a half gigs of pre-cached Half-Life 2 waiting for me at home until the 1st of December.

My PIII-500 can't handle it, Captain!!

I can guarantee that when I get my nForce4 mainboard with SLI setup, this'll be the first game I christen it with. :)

The patch solved my problem.

Now I'm gonna wait and see if the stutter patch makes my game play a little smoother.

Weaksauce PC, and the game is a low-priority, though I did enjoy the first one. I'm waiting to hear if Valve is going to finish porting maps to CS:S or if the CS sequel is in the works.

they're doing both, actually. i wouldn't expect to hear anything about cs2 until team fortress 2 launches.

I can play it, but I get some unpleasant model glitches. A number of models will randomly have long spike-like protrusions... :(.. Steam tech support hasn't answered me in over 5 days either. By the time they answer (if they ever do..) I'll probably end up finishing the game.

What? If you can run Doom 3, no way in hell can you not run Half-Life 2. My graphics card is a Radeon 9500 Pro (that's what, 2 years old now at least?) and I run the game at a decent resolution with relatively high detail and all the DX9 effects turned on and haven't hit a framerate bump yet.
