Who honestly thinks that PS2 will be ready for Spring 2006 in NA?

I really want to believe it, but I honestly believe Sony's playin' us. They're using Spring 2006 as a way to curtail X360 purchases ("I'll wait 6 months and get a PS3!"). I'm betting that come Spring 2006, they'll be like, oops, we can't get good yields. It's being delayed to X-Mas 2006. By then, a lot of people that have decided to wait will be like "It's only another 6 months".

For me, if by the time X360 launches, or maybe a monther afterwards, I don't hear any news about Sony's plans for the Spring 2006 launch (ie. media). I'm getting the X360.

as long as the delorian hits 88 mph and is struck by lightning, they should be here in time to launch the PS2 ... again....

same... if PS3 doesnt launch in spring im getting the x360.

Dont you mean PS3? Edit your title lol

Basically, it looks like several of current PS2 games are just gonna get cut or go to the backburner

Spring can be up to a year from now. Definitley think its possible.
as late as June, right?

I can wait. I waited through the gap between Dreamcast and PS2. There will be plenty to play on PS2, so I won't even notice it.

Hell, GTA PSP will be coming out around X360. That alone will hold me off as long as necessary.

Months and months ago, I speculated that Sony might throw out an early date that they had absolutely no intention of hitting just to take some wind out of Microsoft's sails (actually sales ;) ). The idea being, "our system is so much better and it'll only be a few months later". Then once the holiday season is over, say February/March, say you're having some production issues (hardware or software) and say, it'll actually be here in September.

Kind of a crappy thing to do, but it could be somewhat effective.

However, given the state of the Cell processor and the NVidia GPU, it seems like hardware wise they could make it. And since this is going to be a hell of a fight, I think they almost have to come out in the Spring to not allow Microsoft to get critical mass too early.

We can safely say Fall 06. I dont care how much they claim otherwise.I only seen two console system launch in first half of a year in history of gaming in USA and both ended up megaflops. I also seen spring launch babble a dozen times to know just ploy to get gamers to wait so you can announce another 6 month wait when deadline is up. Rofl I think I fell for that about 4 times just on "ultra 64" launch and even with huge delay it had what, two titles?.
I say Sept is earliest you would see massive hardware launch and even that I say would be pushing it if not for fact that rushing a launch somehow became exceptable practice in gaming, you dont even need one solid AAA anymore it seems.

I actually think they might launch in the US first (at least I hope) It's the biggest market, with the most competition and the most publicity. They really don't need Christmas to sell units, especially with the playstation brand on it. They could even try a worldwide launch like Microsoft is going to do.

They can make it.
Cell has been ready since January. The nVidia GPU will be ready this fall.Developers will have the time they need to make the first titles. It's only a matter of how many units they can produce but I think Sony could priviledge US even over Japan if needed this time.US is the only market where MS could gain ground with the early launch of X360.

Yeah, I had always assumed that if Sony did manage a spring launch it would be like the PS2: Japan first and the US in the fall.

Launching in the US in the Spring would cover their most popular market, cut MS's most popular market off as soon as possible, and would allow more time for production ramp-up for a steady supply through the holiday season.

Please make it happen, Sony.

Did they actually specify in the US for Spring? I had assumed Japan, per their previous launch time table.
i believe i saw somewhere a sony suit saying actaully that it might even launch in the US before Japan.... worried about the 360 they are.

I believe that XBox360 will have a craptacular launch this year. If Sony launches PS3 next fall it will be craptacular. If Ninte...oh never mind, Nintendo will "delay" Revolution to the second half of the year, it will have decent software.

Honestly, it seems this gen is being rushed.

I believe that what you believe is premature only because I want to see what the games look like on final hardware. I think then we can say rushed or not.

I don't.

When you have a custom CPU like CELL, mass production isn't the easiest thing to do... remember the PS2 shortages?

Sony's Japanese press release announcing the PS3 says that the system will be gradually (that is to say, not simultaneously) released throughout the world starting in Spring of 2006. Read that as you will...

From what i can see Sony's dev kits are more advanced than the MS dev kits and MS are launching in November. So at this point i'd be more worried if i was waiting on MS.

Didn't sony play this game with the dreamcast when they first launched the PS2 , never really giving a firm date for north america , releasing only a small number of buggy defective consoles at the japanese launch and finally shortsiding demand by about 1 million systems from october 26th till the end of 2000.

I think it'll be like that again only moreso. You can bet for sure that MS will hit its launch they have actual games up and running, maybe not running 100% but atleast they are actual games, all sony had was 2 tech demos and 4 CG movies and a mockup of the console and controller that may or may not be final. At this time next year they may have games up and running, the system could prolly see a limited and expensive launch in 1 territory before june 2006 but I think it'll be atleast september before anyone on this side of the world can buy one .

Since this thread seems moreso about buying a 360 though, my 2 cents is that there are a couple games I'd play but ultimatly I dont' wanna jump to the HD generation without an HD tv and I'd rather not pay 400 dollars for a new console again. Not when I still have 10+ games to play in my current gaming collection with another 5 or so coming on the current consoles, 2 of them being RPGs.

Why not? They launched the PSP in the U.S. in March and sold 700,000 units at launch. They did that while entering a new market against a competitor with a virtual monopoly, and pricing the system at a higher price than gamers had ever been accustomed to paying for a portable before. Does anyone think they need Christmas for the PlayStation 3?

I don't think it will be as robust a launch lineup as compared to the PSP. They'll have some sports games and NFS from EA, a few Activision games like Tony Hawk, something from Namco (Tekken Tag 2 most likely), I-8 from Insomniac and maybe Warhawk. MS is only promising 8-10 launch titles (and PD0 will almost definitely be delayed) and 30-40 games within four months of launch. Sony will have 10 games at launch plus full backwards compatibility with PS2 games at launch.

Haha, I always typo the deets :P

As for the title (minus the typo), I used it to get views. I still believe there's a chance that Sony isn't lying with the Spring 2006 launch. It feel more like a target launch date than something more set in stone (like MS's Fall 2005 launch for X360).
