Digg founder Kevin Rose has been hired by Google, according to sources close to the situation.
Rose’s mobile app incubator Milk yesterday announced it was shutting down its only product, Oink.

Google is not outright buying or “acqhiring” Milk, the sources explicitly said, but Rose and some others from the company have been hired. It’s not clear what will happen to Milk after Rose joins Google.
Google declined to comment and Rose did not reply to multiple requests.
Rose’s first day at Google is to be this Monday, the sources said.
Rose has an avid online following, stemming from his days as a host on TechTV and the long-running podcast “Diggnation.” Though Oink — which was a local recommendations app — may not have succeeded, it was able to hit 150,000 downloads in its first month.
That kind of ongoing fan engagement could be a boon to Google+, which has been criticized for low engagement and tricky user accounting.
Milk had raised funding from a huge group of angel investors as well as Google Ventures (yup), First Round Capital and True Ventures. The total raised was $1.7 million, so I suppose each of them did not have too much skin in the game.
Google had been very close to buying Digg in 2008, but the deal fell apart at the last minute.
Rose has also had an impressive run as an angel investor, putting money into companies like Fab, Zynga, ngmoco, Foursquare and Twitter.

Google's path from Search giant to social continues. personal opinion: bad acquisition from Google. This man knows how to launch a product, just doesn't know how to sustain it

Digging himself out I see. Hopefully they can help him keep a good idea going, and nix any changes that make his ideas go from good to bad.

Sounds like they hired the right guy, then.

Google is fucking awful at launching products (not joking). Look at their graveyard of major products that they pass off as "betas" and it's pretty clear that they either need to improve initial roll-out or just not even productize these things until they are ready to go in the first place.

I like Kevin Rose, but dude really can't stay still. I don't see him fitting in the Google culture as well. I can't see him as a company man. But seems to be a better choice than whomever is running that part right now though.

Personally I liked Leo Laporte way more, Kevin Rose comes off as too hipster'ish

yeah. never liked this douche way back then. still don't care about anything he has done since. Leo will forever be the reason ZDTV/TechTV were great. That man is just so awesome without trying. Kevin tries WAY too hard to be cool and it shows.

Google buying Digg would've been hilarious, just look at how it's thriving since.

The only smart thing for Google to do if they want to damage control G+'s failure is to buy Twitter and integrate it somehow. I think their warchest is fat enough for that.

Man Digg just went to shit didn't it? V4 fucked it all up, but things were going to hell anyway. Surprised at this news though.

They did already, except you can actually have a proper conversation now.

Martin Sargent was the best because he never took anything seriously.

Coolio for him, but yeah, Kevin's always kinda prided on being an entrepreneur (his angel investing was a logical extension of that.) Wonder where in the company he'll be working and how much free reign he'll have.

Pretty much. It's a shame about how Tech TV turned out.

TechTV was the best cable channel OF ALL TIME. G4 killed it, and it's just plain sad.

My favorite show outside of the Screensavers was Big Thinkers. CBS has the money to give CNET a channel. Someone make it happen!

I've never really gotten over the absolute slaughter of TechTV. Nothing has ever really filled the void for me either.

I think Martin quit the podcast scene to go work for an ad company in 2009. Depressing.

Amen. The Screen Savers taught me so much about computers as a kid and inspired me to want to learn even more. I know revision3 is kind of it's "spiritual successor" but it's just not the same. I miss guys like Kevin, Leo and Pat, Sarah, Chris Pirillo, Martin, Yoshi and hell, even Dan. I know they're all doing their own individual things.

I think this is a great move for Google.

Kevin has said he doesn't like to get too involved in a project and is more of an idea guy and "general project manager" type - he'll just do what he does now, but with a stable salary.

Hiring the Dark Tipper confirms Google's new motto: Be Evil

They better be careful, or they'll be homerowed.

How many of his investments haven't panned out though?

Pownce, Oink, Colour/Color?

The Digg relaunch was such a mess too.

I don't think he was involved in Color but I might be wrong.

His angel investments have been great, but the companies you mentioned he was actually personally involved in development with.

Glad to hear it. I've met him a few times @ Diggnation events and he always seemed like a pretty smart/great guy.

The only downside is that he seems to have great ideas..that happen to lose steam after awhile. Hopefully with Google backing he can finally keep some stuff afloat.

Kevin was a huge Google+ user even before he joined Google, though. He even axed his blog and forwarded kevinrose.com to his G+ page.

He is no genius, but the guy has a sense for the pulse of what is moving forward. That and he is great with keeping aesthetics clean and simple. He has an eye, and he has used it successfully.

A huge amount of luck he has had for sure, but he has used that very well in his favor. Good for him.

When they fired Alex (a newcomer at that point) and the rest of the TechTV staff, except for Sarah, I stopped watching that incarnation of the show on G4/TechTV. Thankfully everyone left to do Rev3, TWiT, or something else.

Fuck G4 and Comcast.

He doesn't seem that smart to me. First he blew digg, then he ran to google+ convinced it was the wave of the future?

Wouldn't want this guy in my hypothetical company for the long haul, just the initial stages.

Agreed. G4 pillaged TechTV... TSS was so much better in the older days.

I used to religiously listen to TWiT back in the day, but I haven't tuned in for a good three years or so.

Also, Extended Play >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>X-Play

Google has clearly jumped the shark. Whatever coolness they once had is gone.

What appreciable skills does Rose have? What can he make? I couldn't even dream of, say, Apple finding a job for him.
