I was goofing around at work as a teenager with a coworker and beat her at tic-tac-toe after giving her the first move. She took center but was chatting about something and not really paying attention at all (obviously)... but still when we realized I won it was a great moment of pure victory. Well, I guess it was more accurately a moment of pure shame for her rather than any actual accomplishment for me, and I ran off with the evidence after she tried to destroy it so I couldn't show the other ppl who worked there how she'd actually lost a game of tic-tac-toe.

If you are the first to enter an X or an O and you put it in the right place, there's no way you can lose. Love it. :lol

Erm. You're not guaranteed a win either. It's a zero-sum game. If both players play an optimal strategy the game always ends in a tie.

Thus, even if you go second..."you can't lose!"

And therein lays the genius of Tic-Tac-Toe – a seemingly futile exercise that is actually a keen test of your ability to win a psychological battle over your opponent. ;)

There is no way anyone can win if neither of you are retarded is there?

how did this game get so popular anyway?

Maybe the person made it for their mentally retarded kid so he'd feel good when he tied and was just like everyone else. Ever think of that? No, I didn't think so. You're just too busy being clever.

The great thing about tic tac toe is that, if you win, it is uncontrovertable evidence of your intellectual superiority over your opponent

In high school my friend made up 3D tic tac toe, and we played it so much during physics class.

I'm guessing most could figure it out by it's name, but for those who don't know what it means...

You have 3 tic tac toe surfaces, atop of one another, like a cube. Think of a rubix cube that's 3 by 3 by 3. All you have to do is make a straight line in any direction to win. Maybe someone should make a flash version of it...

Maybe it was just fun compared to learning physics...and if I played it now it would be boring :p

If it wasn't for the original we wouldn't have 3D tic-tac-toe. :D

Oh...it looks like it already existed. :p It's one of those games where everyone think they've invented it, kinda like hand hockey :p

Here's a fun puzzle for road trips. It's better with someone else around to be the other player so you can stump each other. You can do this solo but then I recommend writing material.

The player going first wants to force a lost or tie. But the player going second will be doing the best he can to force the player going first to win. Where must the player going first make his moves?
