furiously molesting tim burton
Okay, okay, we already had a 'review' thread thanks to someone who managed to sneek a peak at Tim Burton's latest, but today's the day when the rest of the world has their chance. I'd wanted to hit up a midnight showing for the animation spectacular, but no one around here was doing one (damn college towns :()...

Set in a 19th century European village, this stop-motion, animated feature follows the story of Victor, a young man who is whisked away to the underworld and wed to a mysterious Corpse Bride, while his real bride, Victoria, waits bereft in the land of the living. Although life in the Land of the Dead proves to be a lot more colorful than his strict Victorian upbringing, Victor learns that there is nothing in this world, or the next, that can keep him away from his one true love.

I'll be seeing the film this evening in full Nightmare Before Christmas atire (shirt + track jacket), and furiously jerking off through the duration of the film. Who's with me!!!

I'm thinking about picking up the soundtrack afterwards, too. :D

I saw it earlier today. It's great. :)

Oh, and if someone can make me a sweet avatar of this little guy (the little boy skeleton), I would be very happy! I'd make one myself, but I am on my folks' computer now and don't have access to my laptop. :(

Tomorrow.

I'm proud of the fact that I'm one of the few who actually went to see the 'Nightmare Before Christmas' in theatres.

I thought it was brilliant, but had no clue it would evenutally unearth itself as one of the biggest cult-hits of all time!

Dude, same here! I saw it when I was 10, aboslutely loved it, but my family hated it. I have no idea why I wanted to see it; it's not a very attractive children's movie.

For whatever reason my mom brought me out to see it in theaters. I must've been six or seven. When did this movie come out?

Anyway, She doesn't even like animation movies or even kids movies but I went to see it one night and it was just such a memorable experience. I still have vivid memories of where we sat in the theater and such.

Oh, and I'll see Corpse Bride eventually but the movies are just so damn expensive and I just saw March of the Penguins (which was great). I might sneak in or something. :(

Yeah, same here, it was 1993. What a great year. The year that gave us Jurassic Park, Aladdin(well, late92), Animaniacs, ReBoot, Swat Kats, The Fugitive, Groundhog Day, the Sonic toons, some of the best SNES and Genesis games.

Anyway...yeah, I know a lot of people who decided they didn't like the movie after they first saw it. Of course, those same people now consider themselves die-hard fanatics.

I just wish I held onto the merchandise from the movie at the time. I understand it's worth money now.

Ah, then I was no more than 6. Has to be one of my earlier memories. I also remember getting Aladdin and Jurrasic Park on VHS for my bday and being really excited especially since Jurrasic Park was PG13! :lol

Will probably be going this weekend with a friend who works as an operator at t alocal theater. She saw a screening of it last night and loved it. Free tickets for me!

I saw it. Animation was incredible. Jaw-dropping. And maybe I'm naive, but I was surprised at the morbidity of this supposed "kids" movie. I guess not too surprised, what with Night Before, but still :lol

I should probably watch NBC. Always loved the art style.
I should probably watch CB as well, at that.

Just got back from seeing it. The biggest thing this movie had going for it was the character designs and the animation. It was very pretty. Everything else fell flat on its face. The music numbers felt, at best, thrown in at the last second. They were uninspired and kinda gobbledegook. After NBC's charming songs that fit and were informative, these were like reading a ticker on MSNBC set to a garbled tune. The plot was barren and not terribly interesting. These charming characters were not fleshed out (pun intended) well and did nothing that really pushed the plot anywhere. You just drifted from the beginning of the movie to the end.

I'd give it a 3/5, or possibly push that to a 4/5 if you're a Burton/animation/emo whore. If you're not one of those, this goes as high as a must-rent when it hits DVD.

I'm still looking forward to seeing it tomorrow, though my expectations are low.

Why do I get the feeling that the main reason that WB greenlighted this was the hope for a lucrative NBC-sized merchandising line, though?

Reviews all say the same thing, "Not enough plot." But I imagine we're all seeing it, hell I'd turn necro to bang Helena.

It's great, and "not enough plot" is retarded. It's still a kids movie, how deep do they want it to be? It's not like Nightmare Before Christmas had tons of plot. I thought this had more.

I enjoyed it, but it was a bit too short in my opinion.. I dunno, I dont think it's gonna be as memorable in the long run as Nightmare Before Christmas was though.

In the music department, NBC > CB. The skeleton song just came out of nowhere. Too early for that era, and too colorful for the movie.

However, I think the plot and characters were better than NBC's. Maybe not in originality or design, but in development. Overall, I enjoyed it, and was really wondering what route they'd take for the ending (though they went for the predictable one, which was still good, even though the credits began rolling far too soon).

Could the art direction, character designs, and animation BE any sexier?!

Just got back from it. Corpse Bride seemed really short, with the mid section being a bit dull. Most of the humor surfaced near the end of movie. Everything about it looked great. I enjoyed it, but it was no Nightmare Before Christmas.

Oh yeah! Now I know what me and my girl are gonna watch monday night. Must keep steering clear of spoilers...not that this is the type of movie where it matters...?

It's Tim Burton... Duh, of course I'm going to see it.

But like, in four months, or whenever the DVD comes out. Theaters are for dumbasses. And people with friends. Whatever, man.

The movie isn't anywhere near the classic masterpiece that Nightmare Before Christmas is. That said, it's still very very good. I love the story, I love the character design (especially of the living characters,) and the voice acting was great (especially Christopher Lee.) And the animation was exceptional.

However:
I *hated* the maggot. Why the Peter Lorre voice & lookalike face? It was a totally worthless character who cheapened Emily's character, and should have been left out. Every line he spoke seemed forced, I hated his look, I hated the crappy Peter Lorre imitation. Didn't kill the movie for me, but it was definitely something the movie should have done without.

The songs were just not very good. Whenever more than one person was singing, I couldn't understand a word they were saying, and the voices didn't seem to match up with WHO was singing. The "Everything Must Be Perfect" song near the beginning wasn't bad, and I kinda liked the skeleton's jazzy song except when the chorus joined in, but other than that, bleah.

So overall, I'd give it a 3.5/5. I'm not disappointed -- I never expected it to be as good as Nightmare, especially with a different director.

I saw it last night, and was pretty happy with it--I loved the animation, even though in some parts the plot seemed to be in service of the animation instead of the other way around.

I thought it was as good as Nightmare Before Christmas, though my memory might be clouded since I haven't seen NBC since its original theatrical release, and at the time I liked NBC less than those who say it's a classic animated film.

Though I'd chime in on this. Let me just say I'm happy that Corpse Bride didn't disappoint. No, it's not nearly as good as Nightmare Before Christmas in terms of plot, characters or musical numbers, but holy shit, as other people have said, it was still great!

I couldn't believe the visuals...it really seems like this was done on a computer, and I can't wait to watch it again and really soak it in...there was just too much to look at and not enough time to really appreciate the smaller details. Really, really fantastic work in the art department, though.

The real question running through my head was what the hell has happened to Danny Elfman. The musical numbers in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory are pretty good once you've spent some time with them outside of the film's context, but Elfman doesn't seem to know how to properly mix a song anymore. The vocals are impossible to make out in Charlie and there's the same problem here!

Plus, the songs just kinda sucked mostly, except for the jazzy skeleton number towards the beginning. The one with the spider and maggot was just awful, though. Emily's lines were okay, but what an awful chorus...

Either way I want the DVD right now!111111111

The characters were awesome, except yeah, for that maggot.
I thought the songs had their really good parts, and then had their really bad parts as well.

Overall it was a fun experience. Now I need to watch Nightmare Before Christmas again, iirc, the plot was a little deeper in that one.

Saw it on Friday. Didn't compell me enough to create a thread. Quite dissapointing.

It's no nightmare before XMas in terms of story telling nor quirky charm. Felt like the movie was just going through the motions.

Totally predictable and bored throughout the movie.

Rent it on DVD peeps.

^-no way. Definitely go see it.

It's not as good as Nightmare but it's still a great movie. Good date movie too, I'd say. My girlfriend cried at the end, heh. I'm surprised Flightplan was #1 this weekend as it looked horrid.

Of course not this weekend. Then you should go see Serenity. ;]

Hey, it's just my opinion.

But don't blame me if you get that hollow feeling inside after seeing it.

P.S. The musical numbers also seem forced and not up to par as Nightmare.

Saw it yesterday. It was okay. Kinda ended abruptly though. Like they ran out of time in production and said fuck it. So many unanswered questions.

It did end a little abuptly but uh.. how many unanswered questions were there? It wasn't exactly a deep movie. :P

Saw it last night. I loved it, though I do agree that Elfman's efforts on the songs are rather dissapointing, the score itself is another matter though, which I loved!

I liked how it was a bit more adult than NBC with not quite as much "hamming it up" as in NBC. I also enjoyed the rather mature handling of the ending in terms of the relationship issues - it certainly could have fallen into the horrid crap that was the ending of Disney's "Hunchback of Notre Dame" but it didn't, which was much appreciated, because it treated all three of the characters with respect in terms of the plot arc.

Definately not as fulfilling as NBC in an overall sense, but it does feel like a more adult film than NBC, and quite frankly, while it does have its faults the opportunity to see stop-motion animation of this calibre in a theater nowadays comes around so rarely that its worth the admission price just to see the puppets and the animators' work on the big screen.

I enjoyed the movie, and more importantly, it put a smile on my face from beginning to end. Who cares if it isn't as good as NBC? Still a great time for all ages/genders/etc.

SOME SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS! (nothing serious though)

I HATE this reponse with a passion. So what if it's a "kid's" movie. That's a horrible excuse for very little plot. If you've noticed, the greatest kid's movies are always the ones that aren't dumbed down by kids. Kids see the world acting as complicated as it is everyday, if you can hook a kid from the beginning on real problems and real emotion, they're not going to drift off. Sure, they won't understand everything, but kids are smarter than we give them credit for. Dumbing down movies for kids is the worst thing to ever happen to animated features. And movies like Toy Story or Iron Giant, animated masterpieces, stand on their own a GREAT movies in any genre or medium. I just don't see where people thing kids catch the hook. Is it on a lack of plot? Are kids just attracted and pulled in when there's very little plot? I don't think so. It's when you get real emotions, and real problems in the plot that they sit tuned in. Brave Little Toaster, getting home and sacrificing. Iron Giant, coming of age and friendship. Lion King, loss, struggle, resiliency, responsibility, redemption. From my experience, I've noticed when I was younger, the most memorable animated movies from my childhood always stood the strongest today. Pointless sidekicks, pointless musicals, and paper thin consequences and choices are the downfall of bad animated movies, not the target area for kids.

Well, for one, what happened to his parents after that one dude died? The parents were weak characters. I loved a lot of the designs though, got a lot of laughs out of the Butler w/ the nose, the bell tolling crying townsperson, and Christopher Lee yelling out from the church just like Two Towers :lol

Anyway, I thought Corpse Bride was fairly empty too. The main struggle was decent but you can't hold them the entire movie on that. Between was simply pointless musicals, stalling, and amusing characters. Really the only things they had going was the 3-way thing between the 2 chicks and Victor, the amusing characters/art style, and animation. Just not enough. The animation was really brilliant though. You have to see that at some point, but you will find yourself wanting to admire more than is there, because of how well it's done. As far as if it's a Nightmare Before Christmas equal, I guess not. I've never been a huge NBC fan, but others seem to be and not one would compare the two. Their world of seasons, important side characters, and a more universal dilemna that gets out of hand was a lot more interesting though. And a villain that was a lot better done. Why was the vilain in CB even in the movie? He was horrible and utterly pointless. A better film would have left him off all together.

Still, cool flick for the art and animation. I don't want to trash it like I think I have, because it was kind of charming and pretty respectable. Just empty and weak in a lot of other areas. Still, you get lines like some good lines and gags.

"The deeeead walk the eaaarth!" :lol

Beautiful art and animation, of course. I really enjoyed it, but like everyone else has said, not near as good as NBC. As far as the music, most of it just wasn't very memorable, though I did love the piano pieces in the film. I'd say it's definitely worth watching in the theater.

I definitely agree with the sentiment that Corpse Bride is worth seeing simply to support more stop motion animation films...I'll be seeing Wallace and Grommit for the same reason.

Yep. I did the same thing with handdrawn films for a while.

Not that it did any good.
