Why are giant robots largely unused in American film?

I'm sure everyone can agree that giant robots were, are and will forever be awesome. They've worked in animation and comics for years. There's countless asian movies I've never seen. Transformers are always popular in the US(though I've never seen the movie myself). SO why are they so absent from American films? Even if they're not crucial to the plot you hardly ever see them in the background. With the bad news on the TF live-action, the coolest Giant Robot film is still Robot Jox.

Speaking of. That badass Russian in the spider-tank was 100 times cooler than Darth Vader ever was.

well not really...yet
Sky Captain had em and bombed I believ.

The Iron Giant bombed.

No appreciation I guess ;(

Because it takes more than a few geeks jizzing their shorts to make a big-budget Hollywood movie successful. Transformers won't fly for the same reason (well, that and the fact that it's an ultimately hollow and shallow premise designed only to sell toys). I think you are confusing "niche popularity" with things that are legitimately popular.

Didn't Sky Captain have big robots? Bomb. Iron Giant? Bomb.

Just wait. Giant Robots will rule America.

And then we will wipe our jizzy shorts all over non-believers.

Oops, I completely forgot about Sky Captain. Guess I'm part of the problem then. I actually wanted to see it, but I SWEAR by the second week it was simply not playing in the Detroit area. I've almost never seen a big(relatively) movie do that.

While I meant live action IG is fukken excellence. I bitch up everytime at that ending. The Incredibles(while hot as all hell) don't hold a candle to it.

"I've got some words to pick with you."

But, anyway, Hollywood probably isn't too hot on the idea because they figure that "giant mech" movies are a cult genre at best, and said cult will probably just bitch that the movies aren't like [insert GR anime here.] So don't expect any soon

Apparently there is going to be a live action Transformers movie *shudders*

http://www.countingdown.com/movies/3092033

and a Neon Genesis: Evangelion live action film has been on the tables for sometime now though inital reports point towards it being butchered in the process of westernising it. The link is to a fan websites gallery of concept art that they have obtained. You may notice that Asuka is now called "Kate Rose" and Rei is now "Ray"

sorry if this is already widely known on these boards

Sky Captain = Awesome

The Iron Giant = Awesome

The Incredibles = Awesome

Americans suck at movie appreciation.

Does The Matrix count as Giant Robots? I mean, in Revolutions, with the Mecharmors?

I can't wait for the day when Giant Robots become such an integral part of Western movies that we'll be seeing stuff like

Pride and Prejudice and Giant Robots

I think by this stage, The Iron Giant has found success. Sure it bombed in theatres, but I imagine it's made its creators a profit now that it's been on home video for about five years. It certainly helps that the film was really good and, like The Nightmare Before Christmas, it found a cult following for itself. I expect years from now, people will look back at Giant and understand what a teriffic film it really was.

I look back at it now and realise what an awesome movie it was, especially after i picked up the special edition that was released a few weeks back.

Because unlike the majority of the male Japanese population, the American male population doesn't have to compensate for other short comings. :lol :lol Best episode of SouthPark ever.

Huh what's the bad news on TF Live-action.

The movie they are working on will be directed by Steven Spielberg and it will be based on Generation 1. Not bad news in my eyes.

How? I may understand if you like cheesy 50s sci fi meant for MST3k...

Jude Law's acting was superb. Only topped by I Heart Huckabees. He did an especially good job considering his British accent and his past record of roles.

The style of the movie is so very innovative and fits what the movie wanted to go for. The dialogue was well written/well performed. The score fit the movie's adventure feel. Angelina Jolie, usually the kiss of death for any movie, DIDN'T SUCK. She didn't kill the movie, and that alone makes it great.

It had a good sense of humor, excellent action, and a perfect ending. What else do you want?

duckroll is just being jaded ;p.

Anyway, the American movie scene is notoriously cone-sighted when it comes to movies so giant robots aren't really going to fly much in this industry unless there's one helluva paradigm shift in the industry. There's also a few social aspects that are related to why giant robots aren't around in American films but that's a whole can of worms I'd rather not touch.

Yeah it does seem like there's some concepts that serious live action talent won't even attempt. Audiences just wouldn't accept it.

Shouta: Um could you give a small hint what you mean with social aspects? Sounds interesting.

Yeah really. Most asian movies are really, really bad. The handful of good ones (some I don't even enjoy) that do come out in the US (or that you might have heard about) are a tiny faction compared to the huge amount of amatuerish crap being released. By asian cinema I mean stuff from HK, South Korea and Japan in general, not just Japan.

And this is coming from a REAL asian, not some lame wannabe like Shouta. :D

Real answer:

American's generally don't like fantasy.

Apart from major exceptions, like LOTR and Star Wars, Americans feel much more comfortable with movies that lean towards "realism" even if the film in question is about a murderous cyborg or a rapping police officer that jumps from car to car when fighting drug dealers.

Question for any/all:

Would you, personally, like to see movies with Mechs/giant robots? Why or why not?

Shouta - Can you expand into a little more detail, if you don't mind?

it might have something to do with the american perception that movies like king kong, attack of the 50 foot woman and other movies involving giant mantids are straight up b grade cheese. and hence a giant robot movie will fall right into that category and won't be taken seriously.

I've actually written a treatment for an American Kaiju/Giant Robot blowout. Some people here in LA get it. Others just scratch their heads. Personally, I think giant monsters and robots connect well with kids. If you can make a movie that's not utter cheeze, adults could get into it too.
