Why are people buying iPods again?

A few of these iPod videos have been popping up on my YouTube feed over the last year or so, I decided to watch this one. It almost made me want to dig out one of my old iPods.

Nostalgia is one hell of a drug.

I'll stick with my zune thank you very much.

The guy in this thread who brought up the Zune is absolute mental.

I still remember getting my iPod video from my dad ❤️

At the time, I had just returned home after working overseas for over nine months. As a welcome-back gift, I got it, and honestly, it felt like a massive upgrade

Before that, I was still burning MP3s onto 700MB discs. Shuffling through stacks of CDs, organizing folders by hand…. it feels ancient now

Getting this thing felt like stepping into the future. No more limitations, no more disc swapping, just pure freedom to carry my whole music library with me

I recently (three months ago) bought an mp3 player that plays "lossless" formats - Mechen M30.
It sounds pretty good with nice headphones and has a totally cumbersome way to navigate and load songs.
It's almost like vinyl in that I am somewhat forced to listen to a full album vs playlists or jumping around since it's such a pain in the ass.
Good for my lawn mowing sessions. No regrets. Nostalgia vibes.

My guess is since more schools are banning phones and other communication devices, iPod are music only so kids/teens can still have them.

are the people buying ipods in the room with us?

My store and just about every store in a 50 mile radius dropped ipods (specifically the touch gen 7) about three years ago

Hell, most stores dont even sell mp3 players anymore.

I had a couple decent MP3 players. Might name them later.

But I know that the last time I tried to go back to a dedicated mp3 player I got sick of carrying the extra device despite its tiny size. It also didn't support Bluetooth.

Convenience is king these days, I'm afraid.

I wanted to buy one just to mod one. I've had this idea in my head to go full nerd with it. Make the cover look like the Akatsuki robes from Naruto with the red clouds and turn the scroll wheel into Itachi's mangekyou sharingan. I think it would look pretty boss. Haven't been able to find one under $100 though and I'm not paying that much for something I want to take apart to begin with. Still looking for the right beat up one to come across my path. If anyone in here has one they don't want, just let me know. Lol😅

Never, ever, not ever.. understood why people bought into this shit..

A standard MP3 player was all you needed 🤷‍♂️

Oh, and Kazaa. That helped.

My iRiver E10 gave up a while back and I've tried to find something as good again, but it's mostly just cheap Aliexpress music players. It'd be cool if a good company like Sony or Apple made one last stellar music player with physical buttons.

This is what I had back in the day. It ran on a single triple a battery and didn't need a cable to connect to a pc since you could slide out part of it and connect it directly. Had a cumbersome interface, but it got me through high school.

Never owned an ipod, didn't like apple or having to use itunes to transfer music.

My first mp3 player was a Rio Riot, loved the interface but it was a little too big. Then got a Rio Carbon which was pretty much perfect.

Ipods specifically? Dunno. Physical-only UI is so slow now, and I doubt the battery life can offer anything better than something more modern.

Dedicated DAPs in general, though? For less money than you used to spend on the regular-ass iPod you can get something that blows you phone's sound quality out of a deep-sea trench.

Had this one as well! It was fantastic!

Currently using a rockboxed Sansa Clip Zip+:

Do they still have replacement batteries for these things??
They seem readily available. There is an entire modding community around the 5th and 7th gen iPods. Custom firmware, increased storage capacity, custom faceplate, etc. It's really simple and easy as well from the few videos I've seen.

I can't speak to iPods specifically but I fully understand the appeal of having a device that is specifically, and only, for music. I already use my phone for too many other things, having a device that I can use and listen to music uninterrupted while not tying up resources on my phone is much nicer, even if it means carrying another device.

It's why when I upgraded phones a long time ago, I turned my old iPhone 6S into a dedicated "iPod" of sorts.

I used iPods for music and podcasts (manually downloaded and transferred everything over USB - never used iTunes) up to around 2012 or so. Listening to audio for hours a day would drain my phone battery pretty bad. The 80gb model I had holds a special place in my memory.

I finally gave up once the phones got to 128gb. At that point I bought had several extra chargers so I would just put the phone on charge on my desk while listening to audio.

I still like the idea of a DAP if you want to avoid distractions and stay focused.

Was one of those Sony Walkman guys, good mp3 player never had any issues, great file transfer

I still have mine i loved it for the gym but during covid I ditched my paper and pen notebook where I wrote my lifts for an app on my phone and then it didnt make sense to use the Walkman anymore.

I really liked the iPod nano. I have a product red one in a box around here somewhere. I also liked the iPod touch when I was still using Android phones.

Their flagships if you want to get extra crazy:

This was my first main mp3 player: The Nokia of mp3 players: the Creative Nomad Zen Xtra

I got it over an iPod because this bad boy had 30 GIGABYTES(!!!) of storage for like half the price. In 2004. That'd be like having 30 terabytes in portable format today.

For some reason this reminds me of the Rio Karma which was always rated very highly in regards to sound quality.

My Ipod Touch 5 was good at the time, before Apple stopped supporting it, i had to buy a 25 quid cheap plastic lightning connector to use a physically connected Logitech speaker back then, but i liked the Touch 5, but when bluetooth speakers came a long and with Apple not allowing SD Cards, for more storage and blacklisting my device i had to switch to the Android/Sony side of things, which is where i'm at today, i only play hi res LDAC music now, sounds great.
