Why are tortilla chips placed in bags instead on boxes?

Does anyone know where to find some tortilla chips in something other than the normal bag they come in? I'd like to take them to Japan for some co-workers. We're supposed to bring something they can all enjoy, and since I'm from Texas, I figured chips and salsa.

And since the last time I was in Japan, I didn't really notice plain tortilla chips being easy to find, I think the best way might be to bring it over.

Any ideas? I just don't want the chips to get crushed in my luggage.

[I was going to bring beef jerky, but it's not allowed right now. Thanks, mad cows!!]

Yes.

They're called Torengos and they suck.

In Tokyo, Kanagawa, and Osaka you can buy Tortilla chips almost anywhere. Just go to a large department store (one of the biggies in Ginza for example) or station (Tokyo Station, Ebisu Station, Yokohama Station) and visit their food area in the basement (デパ地下). Usually you can find all sorts of brand name stuff from the US, Europe. What tortilla chips do you want?

Bringing meat of any kind that isn't vaccum sealed has never been allowed AFAIK. Vaccum sealed stuff is a different matter altogether and is sometimes allowed sometimes not depending on exactly what the product is.

I agree with just buy a bag and dump them in a tupperware container.

Also, buy those Tostitos with a Hint of Jalapeno!! I just had some for the first time the other day and they rock

Thanks for the advice guys! I ended up buying a small bag of Tostitos round tortilla chips and put it in a shoebox, along with some hot salsa for those Japanese teachers. You think Japan can handle the salsa? And hopefully it won't get smashed to hell in my luggage.

And I didn't even see Torengos. Maybe that's a northern thing?

Try going to a wholesale store like Costco's or Sam's or BJ's....they should have what your looking for.

Put the bag in a box, problem solved.
