I was removing my contacts and whatnot, seeing as it was 3 in the morning and my eyes were starting to hurt. After exiting, I saw two of my hall mates bounding along.

Me: Hey guys, what's up?
Them: 249-242, dude, what do you think?
Me: Honestly, I'm a little disappointed. I really thought Kerry would get this.
Them: (laughing) Did you vote?
Me: Yeah, voted Kerry for president, and...
Them: Kerry sucks cock.

This seems to happen on a near daily basis, ranging from politics, to religion, to the best place to eat on campus.

What I don't understand is, why can't I talk with these people? They're just dumb college kids, just like me. So why can't I talk with them on a reasonable level?

Until you get to know people well, act very moderate.

For instance, when I meet someone I won't tell them I collect comics, video games, or my political affiliation. This is because they will assume things of me based on other people they have come in contact with who collect comic books, video games, and hold the same political affiliation as me.

I find this is the best way to alter people's opinions.

BobbyRobby: I don't think it's fair to hide your beliefs from people you don't know. If they ask, or if it happens to come up, so be it. I'm not going to try to be a different person, because when they find out, it'll be exactly the same as if they had found out in the first place.
