Why do all Americans "munch" on their medication

At least in TV series/movies... They usually take dozens of pills and munch away... What's the reason for this?

Swallowing a dozen pills at once (whole) sounds a bit risky doesn't it?

Especially without water.

are you talking about alcoholics chewing on aspirin? in that case, i think it's because chewing them up and/or dissolving the smaller bits under your tongue make the drug get into your bloodstream faster than swallowing. also works with ambien and other medications

Just watched T-Bag in Prison Break S02E04 doing it... Jack did it in LOST... Jack Bauer did it in 24... Can't give specific episodes though and I didn't find anything on Youtube

Because they're badasses.

I don't think normal people do this. I hope. :lol

Well in that case, were they pain killers? Because like beezlebobo said, it gets into your blood stream faster because of all the cells underneath your tongue and on the inside of your lip. It's like smashing up the tablets and snorting them, just without the bloody nose. People want to get high as fast as possible.

T-Bag and Jack Bauer are not "all Americans". :lol
Well I've seen that so often now but never knew what this is about. Usually 1-2 pills are the correct dose, but eating they're eating them like M&Ms

Could have been. But I mean why would they risk an overdose?

wait wait wait... so TV characters are what all Americans do? Oh wait, I have to save the west coast from terrorist I will be back to finish this later

It's silly, yeah, but it's a bad thing, in my opinion, just because I'm sure many people imitate these characters and there are a lot of medications that should NOT be chewed up before swallowing. But that's a minor little quibble.

But TV said so! It must be true.

Really I don't know anyone who does that. But if people get most of their views on America(ns) TV, I see where the stereotypes come from.

Well, it is reflective to the current drug-taking scene trends.

I actually can't swallow pills whole, so I chew them up first. So disgusting...

Um... that's REALLY bad. If those pills have time release portions, you are completely defeating the purpose of the pills.

I sometimes chew aspirin. They seem to work faster that way and they can sometimes be fun to swallow whole. I should probably look into some BC headache powder.

Yes because you are increasing the surface area of the pill by munching it up into smaller pieces. Thus your stomach acid can more easily break it down. Pills are designed with certain surface areas so that they can last the 6 hours or however long they need to. By chewing them up, you are getting a higher than planned dosage, which can't be good for your system over the long run.

Well, it's not like I habitually eat pills, and I'm still alive, so it all worked out in the end ^^

I chew pills or crush em up and put em in water.

But i do make sure to buy pills where it's specifically mentioned that it's ok to do that.

I just can't swallow pills larger than a generic asprin.

i used to chew and dissolve my ambien under my tongue when i took them, because i wanted fast results and i'm not a pussy.

Right, but just try to avoid it. You are probably fine with any aspirin that isn't slow release.

The danger of the effect of chewing/snorting most medication seems exaggerated.

The pills I take taste so nasty if you leave them sitting in your mouth for a few seconds. Couldn't imagine chewing them, eww

The question is why do non-Americans think what they see on TV is an accurate representation of real ones?

This can be said about any foreign culture. Japan and Anime would be a popular example.

Why do all Limeys call their old mum a slag?

Why are all Mexican women hot and busty?

Why are all Japanese people being criticized by Kawaii actresses for their inability to climb a rope?

Why are all Belgians...actually, I got nothin.

Please don't make generalizations about 301,139,947 people based on the actions of TV characters.

I take pills with water, just like everyone else.

So that FBI agent just did it again, in the next episode (S02E05). What the hell, Americans.

Have you been exposed to CSI Miami yet?

Now there is something.... to what the hell us about.

YEEAAAHHH!!

In the event of a suspected acute coronary event (MI, or heart attack) we have patients immediately take 4 baby aspirin--and you have to crunch them, to accelerate absorption.
most other types of pills generally aren't chewed, but swallowed.

...

YYYEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!--

Depictions in TV are always exaggerated. If anyone is watching J-dramas, uhm, NONE of those things happen in real life. Maji de.

I snort my Aspirin.

It's going straight to the brain so it's going to work quicker, amirite?

Why do all non-Americans always assume anything happening on a scripted American TV show is the case with the entire US population?

i can't swallow large pills either... really tiny ones are okay though.

when i get a prescription from the doctor (amoxicillin or so) i always ask if i can have it in liquid form. only when they then ask me "and what flavour, strawberry, banana, or grape?" do i feel like a child :'(

they have banana now? ewwwwww......
I remember as a kid it was either grape or orange. And neither tasted anything like the supposed flavor. I have no problem swallowing pills but I gag if I try to drink stuff like Nyquil or Robitussin.
