Why does Capcom hate subtitles?

In most of their games where a monster speaks, it's usually inaudible (RE4, Viewtiful Joe, DMC). Yet, in all of these games, there's no option for subtitles. It's really annoying when you beat a boss or get to a story segment and can't understand what the hell they're saying because the sound is badly mixed. Capcom pretty much goes all out with these games anyway, so why not include something as simple as subtitles?

No idea. I bitched about this a while back specifically about RE4 since there's no subtitles, and my girlfriend is hard of hearing. Wound up doing a game script for the game over at gamefaqs, but it's still fucking lame I had to do that.

Wow, that was cool of you. I just really think they should get with the program with this. Normally, I'd sing them praises, but heck, what gives?

It does bother me in Killer 7 when certain sequences aren't subtitled. Most of the game is spelled out thanks to that backwards 'Twin sPeaks' talk most NPC's use, but during major confrontations it gets difficult to make out the engrish.

At least I can follow what Harman says, and I'm thankful for that. Harman kicks so much ass!

I agree.

More optional subtitles for the masses!

(Honestly - it can't be THAT hard to include, right Capcom?)

You know how many good jokes in some TV shows and movies I haven't gotten because I didn't hear it right, and didn't get it till I turned on subtitles? Like 6! 6!!!

Do you know how many retared comments I can read in this threas? Like one! One!!!

kind of off topic, maybe not but...

does anyone else touch themselves to Chun-Li's stage music in Street Fighter II? Like, put some porn on the old computer and have Chun-Li's stage in the background TV?

Try it if you haven't.

I haven't had any problems with Capcom's sound mix lately, but I remember when I first played DMC1 back when it was just released. Holy shit the first boss (spider shit) had such a CRAP ASS sound mix I never had any idea what he was saying. The camera was shit in the fight too, so I died a couple of times and kept rewatching the cutscene to try and figure out what he and Dante were insulting each other about. I mean I know that the script is shit in most Capcom games anyway, but that's really no excuse for the SHIT sound quality in the voice overs. I really don't think this is a subtitle issue as much as a shitty sound mix issue, which is a more serious offense. :D

Yup, yes yes yeah. Phantom, that's who I was thinking about when I listed DMC. There's also some banter between Dante and the last boss that I didn't catch. The sound mixing sucks which makes the need for subtitles even moreso, but even if the mixing was great, subs are still very necessary.

Well, I think Capcom games are far better than Halo 1 and 2. I can'f fucking understand what that little annoying monitor's talking about, and I have hard time understanding grumbling Covenants in cut scenes. :( I heard it has a great story, and it seems like it has a great story, but I can't understand half of what's going on. I actually understood what they were saying in Ryu Ga Gotoku than Halo, to be honest, and I lived in the US for 15 years now. :(

I don't think that's too hard. The problem is that when your sound mixing makes the voices softer than the ambient sound effects and/or music, it really fucks it up. Ryu ga Gotoku had an EXCELLENT sound mix, it was like watching a professional movie. Most action games... don't. :(

Don't worry, a bulk of what's said by the covenant in-game isn't really necessary for the story. It's kinda like the spanish that's spoken in RE4, it just really helps for the mood. MATALO. CABRON. MORIR ES VIVIR. Although it did help to scare the crap out of me, I thought it was sloppy how an enemy could be 15 feet away from you and it'd sound like s/he was right next to you.
Sometimes the voice actors focus too much on trying to distort their voice rather than sound comprehendable.

Damn straight Capcom need to sort this out. I was watching one of the final cutscenes of RE4 when my sister decided to start ranting at me for some reason or other and I missed most of the dialogue, and it just makes it worse that you can't even pause the cutscenes (it's not like they're CGI or anything)

Aw, but the lack of pause-able cutscenes is a crime almost every developer commits. Though my heart belongs to Kojima, this is something he should've pioneered with MGS2. :/

I can also remember that in the light gun RE on PS2 the subtitles didn't match the actual english voice overs 90% of the time. :lol

I put Onimusha: Warlords on Japanese because I couldn't stand the English track. I turned on English subtitles...and when I got to the final boss yeah he spoke Japanese, but THE SUBS DIDN'T APPEAR. wtf.

Word.
Fortunetly those bosses were hard enough that I had to fight them like 20 times apiece before I got past them, lotsa opportunites to catch what they were saying.
If I'm playing a game with ninjas, samurai, conquestadors, whatever, I appreciate being able to hear them in their native language. I think everybody would have preferred if we got Jean Reno for the entire game in Onimusha 3, rather then just a smidgen of it. Heck, ninjas just sound cooler when the're speaking Japanese.

Actually there were subtitles in DMC1.

All the monsters had subtitles. Only the human speaking characters didn't have sub-titles...which was just Dante and Trish. Everyone else had subtitles.

But maybe this was unique to the NTSC version. DMC3 has subtitles through and through. As did DMC2.

Because they don't feel the need to contribute to our nation's declining reading comprehension? Essentially, they like being smarter. lol

Buy the European version, there are subtitles for example for Resident Evil 4, but not English ones ^^.

Worst game for non-subtitled voice acting you can't understand is Legend of Dragoon.

The ending, I had no clue what they were saying. The sound effect mix was much louder than the voices, so I couldn't make out what they were saying among the explosions.

The lack of subtitles, especially in story-based games, is something that really really irks me. It just doesn't make sense.

No, DMC didn't have subtitles at all. I got the game when it came out. Do you have the GH version?

I am almost positive my US non-GH DMC has no subtitles. I remember a bunch of the banter was very hard to understand because of it. Like when he is talking to the boss about being the son of sparda.

The worst sound mix is the Prince of Persia games. Just horrible. Everyone speaks so softly. I have no idea what the prince and Farah were talking about in sands of time.

Yes it did and I have the original.

YES. That fucking annoyed me too. I couldn't figure out why during CG cutscenes, there were no subtitles. As a result, I will never know what Fortinbras says. Oh well. :\

Anyone know what Joe is saying in Viewtiful Joe when he's referencing Mega Man before the 2nd level boss fight? With the Rhino

Resident Evil Dead Aim for the loss. :(

When I first imported the Japanese game, I could barely understand what they were saying. They added subtitles into the US version, but it doesn't match the real audio.

From what I remember, Devil May Cry 1's first boss went like this:

SPIDER: AHHH, ANOTHER SMALL ONE (subtitled, but voice was already understandable)
DANTE: ble able ablsdiwha btiaa big body of yours(???) (not subtitled but impossible to hear)

Again, DMC1 had subtitles for the monsters. And I got the game day 1 back in October 2001. I know I'm right so...whatever...

I believe that part went:

"Ah, another small one, what a dissapointing catch."

Dante: "Well, what a big suprise, for your sake I hope you got something inside that big body of yours *dante then backhands Phantom's face or something*"
