Even AL FRANKEN said Bush got it! So we are all seriously uninformed here. He simply did not win the most popular votes and I'm really surprised someone has said something on the news networks yet.

Umm... those are the 2000 vote totals. And if they're not... some of those figures really don't make sense.

116 million for nixon back in the 60/70s? That probably would've comprised of more than the total voter turn out... and a good portion of the entire population at the time.

And why is that?
R. Nixon ran for office 3 times. (Lost the first).

Franklin D. Roosevelt ran for office 3 times. (won all three, before the two term rule).

Ronald Reagan twice.

Bill Clinton twice.

George H. Bush twice.

etc.

Adding W.'s first 51 to this week's 59M, he's got 110m votes.

Maybe it is a bit over the top. But go here: http://www.nytimes.com/packages/html/politics/2004_ELECTIONRESULTS_GRAPHIC/index.html

Click Previous Elections and then go to 1972. Nixon owned the country. And I thought this election was bad! At least we can still say Kerry came CLOSE! Nixon won the popular vote by 60% to 37% according to that site. And the NY Times is an extremely Liberal newspaper, so if even they recognize that, then I'll believe it.

This thread has me so F*&#ing confused.

So those figures Diablos posted are the votes thoe presidents got in all their terms combined? Why on earth would you add the votes from different terms together?

Ha. Didn't even realise they were for combined terms. Well, better admit defeat on this one Diablos :p I think I'll go now too.

In that case, I do believe Nixon still has the largest popular vote. I'm willing to bet that people voted back in the 60's/70's opposed to 2000-2004.

Admit defeat? No one has shown any conclusive proof one way or another.

Other presidents have won by larger margins, but none have had more votes. There are simply more people in the country now than there ever were before.

edit: Conclusive proof? How about the fact that there were a hundred twenty or so million voters this year, with a population of 270 million? Do you really think that (A) the voter turnout was so much higher as so to offset the smaller population and (B) that nearly 90% of voters chose Nixon?

Obviously I don't buy (B), but given that voter turnout has been steadily declining throughout the years, and this race was quite close, I think it may have been possible that others could have received more total votes than Bush.

I just want to see some actual comparisons, is all, I think it would be interesting to compare, regardless.

Actually, you should believe B. Check out that link I posted above, go to 1972's election. The entire US map is red, except Massachusetts and DC. I kid you not.

In 1972, Nixon got 47 million votes. Next, in a very distant second, McGovern got 29 million. Third place got one million and change, leaving us with a much lower number of voters than we had this year.

edit: Diablos...you posted that Nixon got 60% of the vote in 72...quick, poor math would mean that the total voter turnout was 200 million or so. Well over the adult population right now, far above what it was then...why would anybody believe that Nixon got 90% of the vote when you just linked to a source that says 60%?

From a quick google search.

Nixon 34m (1960) + Nixon 32m (1968) + Nixon 47m (1972) == 113m votes

W. 50.5m (2000) + W. 59.5 (Last Tuesday) == 110m votes

The NY Times is where I got that 60% from.

You did not come in this thread seeking information. You came in here making a claim that is really obviously wrong from just a quick glance at the numbers. Yes, Bush got the biggest popular vote total ever in a US presidential election. Admit the error, move on, and check your facts next time.

What's inconclusive?

Bush has gotten the largest number of votes in history in a single election.

Not that means much. Kerry managed to get more than any other president as well, but he wasn't elected.

I seriously didn't think it was true, and was seeking confirmation.

Zap: Aye, matey. That sounds a little better.

Mandark: Right! I thought Franken was listening to an incorrect figure he heard on the news. Thought. I have been proven wrong. I had no facts. "IT'S NOT TRUE" was more of a "I don't accept it." I'm still bitter from Tuesday, you know? :D
