why does my half life 2 look like this?

Just got a Geforce 6600GT for my PC (quite a step up from SIS integrated graphics)

Downloaded a few demos, and the graphics seem messed up. A lot of times I see missing polys (either transparent or sometimes black). Here is a pic captured from the intro to Half life 2 to show what I mean.

I haven't seen this in far cry or Rollercoaster tycoon 3. but it did crop up in a farbrusch demo, and 3Dmark 05. 3D mark 05 also had some incorrect polys - the character models had 'spikes' - where the polys were clearly not drawing right.

Any suggestions? Its a sparkle 6600GT, AGP. Not overclocked. In an athlon 64 with 512MB RAM. No other cards in there.

maybe you should return your card or it could be a driver problem, i have a Leadtek 6600gt and half life 2 runs perfect (amd 3500+, neo plat2)

what drivers are you using and did you remove your old ones ?
what kind of temperture on the card ?
which PSU ?

Spikes? That's usually a sign of overheating...

Try downclocking the card to see if the problems remain.

lol! I just yesterday got my new PC with 6600 GT bundled with FarCry. Imagine my disapointment when it looked like shit. I was "wtf, this is like a hi-res dreamcast game".... But then I downloaded v1.3 patch for FarCry and now it looks great. Just a little reminder for me why I moved to console games... :P

anyway. I'm an ex-pc gamer back from the day when Shogo was hot so I'm quite out of touch of these modern driver stuff.... What drivers should I use with my PNY Verto 6600gt? Newest ones fron NVIDIA homepage? or what the hell are these beta forceware drivers? I am confused. Please help. =) Sorry MrKlaw for using your thread... :)

its using the 66.93 from nvidia. Went on from scratch - no other drivers installed.

Its not overclocked, and shouldnt be overheating (although i can't find the temp info which is supposed to be in there somewhere). I also can't find the clockspeed stuff - can someone point me in the right direction?

I've just checked the latest beta drivers which address SIS integrated motherboards with 6600GT AGP problems, so I'll see if that does anything.

:) at Midway. I thought the Far Cry demo looked pretty ropey too. Maybe it needs a patch to utilise some of the extra functions. I thought rollercoaster tycoon looked great though. Seems PC graphics have moved on quite a bit since my voodoo 2 SLI days...Still don't like the fact that the PC Gamer coverdisc has way more patches than demos though.

I have read quite alot about problems with faulty 6600GT cards. Overheating,crashing...with default settings. And 6600GT is downclocked to 900Mhz in the first place...so there shouldnt be any overheating with properly working cards.

edit: MrKlaw, download the FarCry 1.3 patch, the difference was like a night and day on my PC. :)

At anandtech they did a good review on lots of 6600GT's.

Conclusion? A majority of them used very bad HSF's. This can be the same problem here. THE HSF isn't attached correctly to the chips and there is a gap hole between them.

67.66 from nvidia. Not certified, latest betas. I had the 71.24 apparantly certified from sparkle, but I have no idea how that is certified and a later version number than those on Nvidia's website, so I stuck with Nvidia.

Where did you get yours from, Midway?

Well glad it works for you now. By the way, don't bother turning on AA or AF on the farbraush demos. The way NV does AA makes the demos crap out. Of course it's a different story on the ATI cards. :)

But this overheating is a problem. I wouldn't just accept the new drivers and think everything is ok. I'd definitely do some stress test on the card and monitor the temperatures. That problem you described screams over heating. Could be that at stock clocks when the card overheats the drivers are actually throttling down your clocks. In any case, do the stress test and monitor the temperatures at stock clocks.

EDIT.

I'm not sure if there is suppose to be any on the fly clock changes on the 6600s. I know that the 5800 was a different story. The point is that if your 6600 is overheating at stock or find signs that it is (clocks throttling down) it would be best to get a new one.
