Why is Digital Foundry the only place that feels like it has a standard in the gaming journalism sphere

You might not like some person there or something they said in the past, but its qualified people talking straight, and they produce in video form, and just stay consistent and on-topic.

I think old Gamespot, when Greg Kasavin was there, had the same feel.

Why does everything feel so amateruish in gaming journalism?

I just want some serious people with thought out informed opinions on games, contained in a 40 minute show without 3 hours of bullshit, lighthearted banter and people constantly trying to be funny.

Gaming and professionalism dont exactly go hand in hand, this is not a serious hobby/industry, expecting serious journalism is kinda funny...

They're all a bunch of insufferable amateurs, and the world for them is one big Reddit page for them to LARP as Really Funny and Interesting People.

I tried to read a review for Doom: The Dark Ages - anything just to get some idea about the game. The Destructoid review was a short blurb, and by the end I still had no idea what sort of game it is. The review on Eurogamer was clearly someone trying to sound really rad.

It's awful.

if you are a squid, you could see DF that way. But nah. Their whole schtick has made the discourse more toxic and is not even useful or practical.

Digital Foundry has done more to lower the overall quality of gaming discourse than any other outlet, and I'm dead serious.

Minute technical breakdowns and pixel-counting have nothing to do with how much fun a game is. Ray-tracing has never made a game better.

I dunno, i only see gematsu as my gaming site currently. I think, they are kind of neutral side, just showing information about news, no opinion. I think writer's opinion is what makes bias.

It's not that Digital Foundry has a great standard, it's that they do act more consistently professional, and stay on topic giving opinions about technical aspects of games. By comparison, the average game journo is far more emotional and will straight up trash the audience.

The most I see dumb from Digital Foundry is sometimes one of them will say stupid stuff on Twitter, they will sometimes throw a passive aggressive comment at people in the audience that annoy them, and they're sometimes straight up wrong on technical aspects.

I don't LOVE Digital Foundry, but if games journalism were all like them...I could tolerate them, instead of cheering on their demise.

I get what you are saying. It's produced in a professional manner. No trying to mimic influencers or tic tok weirdness.

It's probably because of Richard. Just remember the "Hogwarts Legacy" case, where apparently, John Linneman was emotionally shaken and Alex Battaglia, being a member of Resetera, was going with the crowd in hating the game because of JK. Then Richard took it upon himself and did the review.

DF is great at what they do, but still we gotta make our own decisions while making purchases, basically use logic and draw ur own conclusion while getting all that nicely accumulated data DF worked hard to provide for u, otherwise u gonna done fuck it up by for example listening to their biased opinion and buy xss:

TLDR: Like in the above case- u can see all the professionally gathered info by DF but instead of listening to their false claim xss will be fine and is good deal, u use ur own brain and logics and simply do the math- 3x weaker gpu, lowered vram pool and 2x smaller ssd from series X for tiny price difference(200$ is nothing considering what we spend tru whole console gen)and u will have to suffer whole gen on inferior mashine playing nastily cut out games whole time- u not going with series s but instead get barely more expensive series x or even better ps5/pr0 :)

Old Gamespot is GOATed. Not you have the folks at Kinda Funny who seem like they never matured past junior year of high school.

They´re ok at what they do, but like all analysts they are looking at stuff from the outside and oftentimes can only give (educated) guesses.
They also trigger people by being too impressed by stuff.
They also trigger people by not being impressed enough.

bottom line, there is no way to make things right for some internet basement dwellers, hence you will always have the usual bipolar nonsense ranging from "they are jesus reborn" to "they killed my cat!",

They aren't really game reviewers. They do a good job on the technical side for gaming. Not sure who really does a better job in that sense. I haven't seen any other alternatives in that sense listed in the previous thirty-some post up to mine.

So we're not allowed to talk about the technical merits of a game because it doesn't impact the fun? Odd stance.

I more or less agree with you. This board is pretty anti DF for some reason.

Despite the fact that there's a new thread for every single video they produce within seconds of course.

I really like Digital Foundry too. I don't know if they are bastions of objectivity and rigorous methodology, but their content is entertaining and informative. And woke-politics aside, I'm a John Linneman fan. His DF Retro videos are awesome. He's a prominent gamer who appreciates the medium's past and loves to promote and spotlight it. I appreciate that. It seems that many pixel-counting YouTubers don't give a damn about gaming's past but John does, and I also get the sense that he longs for that era the same way I do.

DF Retro maybe.

For those most part it feels like they are the main fuel of the pixel war with their breakdowns and pixel zoom in's. Most of the casual gaming audiance doesn't care or even notice. The way they handled Hogwarts and some MS reviews. Strong bias comes through too in reviews. You know who I mean.

If they are the best of the worst, god help us.

Facts. I'm so glad he did a STELLAR video about Powerslave Exhumed. It really is a hidden gem.

OK so first of all, surely you knew what would happen when you started this thread.

To your question though, gaming journalism is all but dead. Journalism is no longer the goal. Engagement is the only objective and that doesn't require journalism. The dumber and more misleading your shit is, the more engagement it will likely get. We have really fucked ourselves (with help from the algorithms). We don't deserve good journalism in gaming. We made clickbait and outrage farming the business to be in.

OP must be playing the oblivion remake and decided to make homemade skooma, then post this shit on here.

Stop right there criminal scum!

In their defense, it's fuckin' Doom. You should already know what type of game it is.

Yeah, Gematsu is just news. Like the old Andriasang. Dang, I miss Andriasang
i vaguely recall the site, i once dwelling in 1up long time ago and went into destructoid, then siliconera, but turned off because of the commenters, and i had bad experience with them, then i went into gematsu (commenter is not better though) but at least much better imo
