Will Japanese and "PAL" PSPs be the same?

I'm wondering because Region-wise, Japan and Europe fall under the second region, but are still incompatible because of the television signal differences. Someone from Europe asked me this about my PSP FAQ, and I'd like to know for sure, or the liklihood, etc.

I really don't think they'll be the same region on PSP.
There's no PAL/NTSC difference, so I think they'll use region 3 for Europe/Australia.

confusing indeed, why region 3 for Europe?
I thought the psp region codes were the same as the dvd ones since japanese psp games had a region 2 on the box.

we don't know yet is the easy answer.

You would think that Sony would use the same region coding as DVD because they have used that so far, and it would make licensing movies for different territories simpler for studios.

In that case, Europe would be region 2. Europe has never had a problem with playing Japanese discs because we've always had NTSC capable DVD players. My old Japanese DVD player also played PAL fine (but not on a Japanese TV).

So I would guess that UMDs from Japan would play on a UK PSP. Although I suppose your question is mainly aimed at being able to play UK UMDs on a Japanese import PSP, which should also work.

FWIW, I'll try it as soon as UK UMDs come out - if they come out. It'll be a bit of a wait though.
