If your machine has been hacked lately or you get lots of mails telling you to stop sending span, porn, etc - your machine isn't updating automatically :)

Right Click My Computer > Properties > Click the Automatic Update Tab

I'm using SP2 so it might be a bit different if you haven't updated, but its still under properties in SP1.

Remember if you have a pirate key you can't use windows update anymore since v5 doesn't work with pirate keys.

-Any- pirate keys? I recall having to change mine for SP1 which worked, are you sure?

Actually, that's not necassarily a sign that your PC has been compromised; a lot of viruses send using mask emails (generated from the address book of the infected computer) so it sends out virus emails using those addresses, so it "looks" like it's coming from other addresses. If your email address is in the infected computer's address book, in can send emails under your address, making it appear that it's coming from you, when it isn't.

SP2 auto updated for me, but I was remote connected to a relative in florida trying to upgrade them to SP2 and it wasn't in the windows update, when will it show up? I went to V5 and it wasn't there, and I couldn't go back to v4.

SP2 final doesn't have any more protection against piracy than SP1. Because I built that relative their computer in the end of 2002 with a less than legit key and they have sp1 and v5 works fine.

I think rumored anti-piracy measures are generally overstated. I remember just before SP1 was released, someone actually created a website that listed how exactly Microsoft would going to lock out each and every pirated copy of XP by logging legit keys with UPC tracking with IP location when they'd use autoupdate or some other BS.

I probably should have bookmarked that website because it was 100% convinced that this was going to go down and it turns out he was 100% flat out wrong.

I'm at work at Tim Horton's head office. I doubt we have pirated keys in our select agreement. Just found it odd that it didn't default until a few minutes ago.

SP2 doesn't have any more pirate key ban, but v5 does. You can still install SP2 but v5 doesn't work with pirate keys. Most or all known pirate keys are blocked on v5.

Wrong. ;)

Not wrong. I know people with pirate keys with sp1 installed. None of them can use v5, while I can. Do a google search on it, and you will see M$ has blocked pirate keys from v5. Now pirate keys still work to install sp2 just you cant use windows update v5.

Try to use V5 on a pirate computer good chances it won't work.

I have. It works.

Just because you can't get it to work, doesn't mean it won't work for everyone else. Just a thought.

I'd rather not discuss the intricacies of Windows piracy, but you really don't know what you are talking about. If you do happen to use a "bad" key with v5, it will tell you that you have a bad key. It does its little "check" searching for updates and all that and just reports back an error message.

"The product key used to install Microsoft Windows may not be valid. For more information about why you have received this error message, and steps you can take to resolve this issue", etc.

Do you guys have XP autoupdate and install? Just curious. i turned off both as soon as i reinstalled XP. i try to control how much XP communicates with MS as much as possible, and i find out about critical issues before MS released fixes for them anyways.

For XP, I turn both off completely. I leave Norton Anti-Virus to autoupdate though. Kinda wish I could adjust how often it checks, since the default is every 4 hours.

Maybe I'm the only one, but I have ZERO interest in installing SP2 until I hear nothing but glowing reports about how great it is. I've had enough issues with driver and software upgrades in the past...and I don't feel like having one with XP at the moment.

i don't plan on installing it until i reinstall XP. The only MS product is use religiously is XP itself, which therefore renders this update pretty useless to me. About the only way i'd update sooner is if there were some ridiculously dangerous XP exploit that would warrant it.
