Windows XP turns 20 today

Windows XP released October 25,2001. It's one of my favorite windows ever after 7 I'd say. The UI was a big improvement at the time and had great compatibility with older software, great PC games around this era too. I used it till about 2011. What are your thoughts and memories with XP?

I remember when it first released and people wouldn't move from 98SE ... the irony that it took about 10yrs for another OS (Win7) to finally replace it as the most popular OS.

I still have it running on various devices.

XP was indeed awesome, then again I'm still on Win7. People harp on about new OS's but for me, if it works don't fix it.

Had the option to upgrade for free several times and ignored it, had too many exterrnal devices for a home studio and was sick of having to install them over and over again. Some are legacy so simply would be too much hassle. Also couldn't care less about the newer features.

I fucking HATE this OS with a passion, purely because of its UX design.

The obnoxiously bright blue and green, the shit fonts and icons, everything screamed "archaic" even when it was just released.

This is the real Windows. Everything else has been a fancy schmancy remix :p

For real, amazing memories. Computers just don't feel right to me without it :p I had XP installed on a big-ass partition on my iMac back in the day

Fun fact. Chinese ATM’s and the Beijing subway runs on XP.

I’m personally a fan of 7, but XP worked just as good. The blue is still burned into my retinas

Why Microsoft didn’t just update the skin and just carry on with XP2 or something, I’ll never know. XP just worked, pure and simple.

Later adopter so only used it for a couple years.
Figuring out how to install an XP MCE oem by juggling those 3 discs on my first gaming/entertainment build felt like a great accomplishment.

XP was great. Played games for hours on that rig. Athlon 5600 ATI1650. Even had some of the media center doodads. First time I hooked up a PC to a projector. 720p Mitsubishi. Upgraded to a tricore and 8800GT before going to 7 pretty much as soon as it came out. 64bitness. video cards were starting to devour significant RAM and some other tech upgrades around then. Vista was never an option.

If I could, I'd love to be just using Windows 7. Rock solid. Windows 10 is too, but prefer the traditional UI like old OS. I think XP was good too. But I forget if it was 98 or XP which were security issues, patch fests and crashes galore. It was probably 98. Never used Windows 8 or 2000.

Been there on day 1. Still haven't seen such a rage within PC community as it was back then due to the minimum 128MB RAM requirement. The SP2 was an amazing turnaround tho, after that everyone seemed to instantly love the new Windows.

One of the last really impressive O.S.' by Microsoft. I recall no one wanting to leave XP. Windows Vista was quickly turned to a piece of history. However, Windows 7...I was using up until November 2020. Windows 10 has been okay for work but the whole thing with 'tiles' (early renderings of Win8/8.1); we could have done without.

Man, I really loved windows xp.
I made a really awesome friend when I upgraded his Pc from a Windows ME to Xp. He was so happy his computer was usable again lol.

Man I remember installing StyleXp and having so many cool minimalist skins.

I also remember toward the end of Win xp life span, not being able to get on the internet without installing service packs, and anit-virus, or your computer could just randomly get owned from just being on the internet.

Man, good times.

I still run WinXP in a VM just so I can revisit and mess around with it every once in a while.

A great OS and I eventually ended up installing the Zune theme. The Media Centre Edition also had a more subdued blue and green.

I liked Vista more, even though a lot of PCs weren't really up to running it well. 7 was a more polished Vista although it lacked some of pizzazz that Vista had. 8... 10 has been great and 11 is on the whole bad.

11 is better than 10 due to a way better UI.

Questionable. There is no consensus for personal taste. There are people who like rounded corners and there are people who dislike.

Thats why Windows 8/10/11 have inconsistency over using legacy UI.

The UI is not 'way better'. It's subjectively better and really just more rounded and mobile OS like.

As I said, the window snapping UI is definitely better, but that's about it. For me wt least, the taskbar notification area can be incredibly slow (taking up to ten seconds to load). A problem I never had on Windows 10.

The Zune theme and Royale theme were hot. Plus I had fun making my own custom icons, something I did for Vista.

zune theme in xp? interesting since vista was out at that time.
The Zune theme was available in ‘06, that’s before Vista dropped (‘07). And the Zune theme itself is just a recoloring of the Royale, Embedded, and Olive themes (all of which, from what I remember, were around as early as ‘05).

I see, for some reason I thought Vista was 2006 but it was early 2007 so I can see why I thought it was 2006. They look pretty good from a quick google I did.

My company only switched from XP a few years ago, it was definitely the most used UI for people and businesses for a long time.

I used XP up until 2015 when I switched to 10. I mostly ran a custom theme very similar to 10 actually. XP is the GOAT.
