Winning Eleven 9 - IGN review

7.0 Presentation
Still the Achilles' heal of the franchise. Lack of licenses hurts, as does awkward menus and interface.
8.0 Graphics
Great facial textures in cutscenes, but players need more emotion. The animations are stil the best in video soccer. On the pitch, there is negligible visual improvement over WE8.
7.0 Sound
The commentary is nothing special. The crowd provides good atmosphere but doesn't react to heated action in the box. The song list sounds like it was ripped from a cheesy '80s Ukrainian discotech.
9.5 Gameplay
Football at its finest. You can play 1,000 matches and see something new every time. Slowly building your attack and hammering in a header is to die for. Excellent physics and control.
9.0 Lasting Appeal
Master League is among the most challenging franchise modes in sports videogames, and strangely addicting. Finally, with online play and rankings, we can discover just who the best is.
8.8
Great OVERALL
(out of 10 / not an average)

Winning Eleven 9 is a gem of a soccer title, but it feels like "Winning Eleven 8 Online." That's not a dig at Konami -- the gameplay of the WE franchise is the best that has every graced videogame consoles. In fact, it's amazing that the development team is able to continually refine and tweak the title to continually improve our virtual soccer experience. Still, there is plenty of room for improvement in terms of visuals, audio and presentation. The graphic and sound quality is virtually the same as last season, and presentation continues to improve slightly with more user-friendly menus and team licenses, but there is still a long way to go.

The addition of online play is fantastic, but that's a feature that should have been added last season, if not earlier. Master League continues to shine, mostly because of the challenge of inking marquee players. Instead of the generic first and second divisions, why not start a team in national league play and then get promoted to an unlicensed Champion's League? There is really no reason why crap teams like Livorno should be matched in the same division as Arsenal. All of that being said, WE9 is still the undisputed champ of videogame soccer. You'll laugh; you'll cry; you'll scream "GOAL" until you go blue in the face. It's that fun.

Excellent gameplay, above-average presentation.

The commentating is horrible in the videos that Ive seen. I always turn it off anyhow, but it is really, really bad.

During the few times that Ive played WE9, it felt like a very different game. Maybe because I had such a limited touch, or maybe because I just have a deeper knowledge of the mechanics.

Put Peter Brackley am awesom!!

Seriously, I miss WE6 when they had five commentary languages (German, French, Spanish, English, Japanese if I recall correctly).

Does anyone know if this supports voice chat?

No, Konami online implementation is lame but if it runs smoothly (which supposedly it does), that'll do for now.

Shinobi, get the PS2 version! Better community, plus you can play me. :)

Oh I'm planning to...just letting people know what the options are. But I probably won't be picking it up till the end of the month, unless a sackful of money crashes through the roof.

Are there any tweaks to the Master League system? I didn't like the one in WE8I where the players actualled aged. It made forming a dream team so much harder and more complicated. I didn't like the "training" part of it too because playing off-season matches is boring as hell and "training" is too much grinding just to improve a player that is going to retire eventually...

There is a big difference in gameplay between WE8 and WE9. Dribbling and passing have been toned down, which means that the pace of the game is much slower and more realistic. The ball physics have also been improved.

8.8 is way too low. Buy this people.

Coming soon: Roman Abramovich Football, in which you're let loose to make your fortune with crooked oil deals in order to have billions to fund your whimsical footy side that prior to your arrival hadn't won fuck-all in fifty years -- it's like Championship Manager with the cheat codes already included ;-p

:lol

Some fans are REALLY bitter/jealous about Chelsea and the Abramovich billions...

Ah, the need to know about 360 BC is killing me, I hope it gets confirmed soon.

They also posted a PSP review, it's lower, but it seems like that was due to lack of a master league mode. I just want a port that has the gameplay included. Is anyone else planning on picking up both versions?

I'd buy it.

After all, I've played Master League so many times over the years in the different WE versions, that now all I do is start with a whole lot of money and make multiple dream teams. :D
