Wipeout Pure Or Ridge Racer?

If I had to go with one or the other, which would you recommend more, Wipeout Pure or Ridge Racer?

ALSO!!! Please someone tell me if the original music composer of the first Wipeout on PS has some new songs in Pure? Are they good?

I enjoyed Wipeout and Wipeout XL, but ALL other Wipeouts lost my interest (the first Wipeout had the best music of all them). I haven't played Wipeout Pure, but i have played Ridge Racer and I love it so much more than ALL the other Ridge Racers.

Although I'm buying Wipeout, if I had to choose between them at the same time, I'd choose Ridge Racer.

They are similar in a way. Both use increasing speeds to evolve the track designs (same track becomes new as you need to find different ways around the corners etc)

Both are mostly time trials, the AI effectively a moving roadblock.

I'd seriously consider getting both, but just delay one of them.

Based on my experiences with these games: buy both, you won't regret it. They are still different takes on racing + the best titles (in addition to Lumines) in the launch lineup (also good stuff to demo the system to friends with).

If you are forced to choose between them and you didn't like the other Wipeouts, Ridge Racer is probably the safe choice.

Pure seems to be a combination of the first, 3rd and some Fusion mixed in. It works.

TO ALL:
What about my question about the music? Does the composer for the first Wipeout have news songs in Pure? I liked his music best. In fact, tell me which you think has better music.

I am kind of leaning towards RR only because I haven't liked a Wipeout for a while.

I suspect you'll hear a lot of recommendations for Wipeout on this board (I can hear the Wipeout crowd coming) but without having played either one of them I'm going to say you should go with Ridge Racer.

Every game in the RR series has been top notch. The PSP version takes the best tracks from all the games and even Rave Racer and puts them in one package with updated graphics, new gameplay features, etc. So it's basically the ultimate Ridge Racer game. To me, that seems pretty hard to top.

I am buying RR at launch. And for the record I have always preferred the RR series over the WO series.

I've played both and had more fun with Ridge Racer - maybe it's the power sliding, I dunno. Wipeoout was great in it's own right, but just not as fun for me.

For me:

Ridge Racer
Metal Gear Acid
Lumines

Well, I also had this dillemma and had to weigh the options for both.

Wipeout

+ I enjoyed the first one on PS1
+ Futuristic, cool graphics
+ GAF Hype
+ DL content

- Hated Wipeout since the first one (especially XL)
- Easily annoyed with the "floaty" control, prefer F-Zero

Ridge Racer

+ Love Burnout3, Outrun2, Daytona
+ GAF Hype
+ Modern cool graphics
+ Haven't played a RR game in YEARS

- Hated RR on PS1 (mainly due to the fact that the first couple games seemed like the same dang track over and over again.)

I decided on Ridge Racer, simply because I think that I'll enjoy the gameplay a lot more. This one seems to have a lot of tracks, and as you can see, I enjoy a good power-sliding racer. I feel pretty confident that Wipeout Pure will have the same floaty, fishtailing control that I hate about the series.

I'm not much of a racing fan but I'm going for Wipeout simply because of the graphical style and the music. RR games are a bit too traditional for me...

If your looking for something to showoff your PSP with get the one that isn't plagued by slowdown. Ridge Racer.

The only advantage I see for Wipeout are the weapons.

WipeOut Pure is plagued by slowdown? WTF? How come it's the day before launch and this is the first time I've heard this?

It's not really...

People are blowing that out of proportion.

Because its not true. WOP has slowdown, but its not constant like seismologist is suggesting.

Thanks! Love that music. Have you heard the songs Cold Storage did for Pure? How many are there? Are they as good as the ones in Wipeout?

I'm getting Ridge Racer at launch, but I am definitely picking up Wipeout Pure after seeing IGN's video review. The game is ridiculously fast when you move up in the classes. And the person playing knew how to play too. Every other video I've seen of Wipeout Pure involves the player slamming into a wall every 4 seconds.

Ridge Racer is still the best racer on the PSP. Wipeout does rock, but RR's ultra smooth frame rate and style wins over Wipeout Pure in my book.

And yes, Wipeout Pure DOES have slowdown, but it's nothing that ruins the game. The inconsistent frame rate does hamper the sense of speed for me sometimes, however.

Also on the subject of music, Leguna, keep in mind that in Wipeout there is no way to choose what songs will play when you race. It's all random. In Ridge Racer, you can choose which song you want to listen to at the start of every race. The group you like isn't going to have more than one or two songs in the game anyway.

But just get them both. RR is straight racing, and Wipeout Pure is futuristic racing/combat action. They feel different enough from each other for them to both have a spot in your library.

And if you want Cold Storage songs, go buy their album. :P

We're talking about Wipeout not Extreme G.
Naw, Extereme G's the inbred cousin. Wipeout was just dropped on her poor little head at birth. :P

That's all beside the point though. What's important is that RR>*

Birdo,
In case you didn't know, all the wipeouts (including the orginal) have had licensed music for soundtracks. So it's anybody's guess if the music is similar to the original because that all depends on which songs get licensed to be put in the game. You should find out which of the songs in Wipeout you like and see if those artists are being used in Pure.

Also, was Wipeout online or not?

Nope. :( Just the content download. Twisted Metal Head-On, ATV Offroad, and IIRC some of the Sony sports games are the only titles with online play right now.

Does anyone know if the PSP tunneling software is working better now?

In case you haven't been reading, Cold Storage composed all the songs in Wipeout. According to the IGN review, Cold Storage is back in Pure, but at what extent I don't know.

Looks like it's both for me.

I picked up Wipeout today during lunch (got my psp last night but no games) and it's freakin awesome so far - classic wipeout. This is the first game Ive seen/played on psp and the graphics are just ridiculous. The tracks I've played are really good so far, great weapons (love the sound of the big bomb being dropped) tho the music hasnt blown me away like XL (tho I've yet to play w/ headphones). The controls seem like more of the same, I use the d-pad and no complaints so far. From what I've played - if you're a fan of the previous ones, it's a must have.

I'll be picking up Ridge Racers (and Lumines - both preorders) tomorrow - it's my favorite racing series by far so I'm expecting even greater things.

Wipeout's an easy choice for me. I may get RR later, but the series was never my favorite.

Wipeout had tracks by Orbital (PETROL) and Leftfield (Afro Left) and probably others I can't remember.

Wipeout 2097 had tracks by Chemical Brothers, Photek, Underworld, FSOL, Fluke, Prodigy.

Wipeout 3 had tracks by Orbital, Underworld and others.

Can Wipeout Pure be enjoyed by people who don't really like racing games all that much? I'm wanting to pick up a PSP but I'm having trouble deciding what games to get as they are all pretty in genre's I'm not real keen on it. Wipeout Pure, Lumines and THUG2 remix are the three I'm concidering.

Birdo,
In case you weren't reading closely, it was stated the Cold Storage did some of the music. Not all of the music, as I figured. Music from several artists have been used in each of the Wipeouts. So far it looks like Cold Storage did one song in Pure. Therefore, the soundtrack is still quite unpredictable.

Try to read a little more closely and not read what you want to hear...

TO ALL:
For the record, so far I think this way:

In Terms of Gamplay:
F-zeroGX > Ridge Racer PSP > Wipeout > Gran Turismo 3

In Terms Of Music:
Wipeout > F-zeroGX > Ridge Racer PSP > Gran Turismo 3

F-zeroGX is the king of all racing games because of it's ULTRA fast gameplay, tight controls, and racing music that still has yet to meet its match. Wipeout 1 had some pretty awesome music maybe in even better than GX, BUT being that Wipeout is in every other way too out dated, F-zeroGX goes ahead.

I can't speak for Gran Turismo 4 (don't care about racing sims) and as far as Burnout 3 goes, the music sucks (don't care to use my own over played music, I wanted something new), NO REPLAYS, no button config and I have a personal problem with the multiplayer mode (dont allow 2 players on one Xbox to go online).

Birdo,
I did a search in gamefaqs and saw that Cold Storage essentially did all the songs you enjoy in Wipeout. FYI.

And I'm glad you're pimp F-zero GX when ever you get the opportunity, but that doesn't help on which you are going to get, PURE or RR. Which is it? Let's not also forget that one is online and the other is not (however you need to get get or wirelessness to work first)... :)

Mann

Oops. Well it's looks like I was misinformed. RR cannot be played online? Birdo, you read that? No 6 player on-line for you. Who told you this?

Mann

manngc:
Yes I am aware that I can't play RR online. I'm sure future games will take full advantage of the online feature.
Try to read a little more closely and not read what you want to hear...
What??? And why are you saying this???

Wipeout --- keep the dream alive : D

it's been a long while since we've gotten a great Wipeout, and it's a testament to portable gaming how good this one seems to be.

I'll pick up RR eventually in the droubt ---- Wipeout is just too good to pass up now, and it'll keep occupied for a while.

ridge racers wins. framerate.

but really you need both. in which case you should play wipeout first, so you don't come in spoiled by rr's rich chocolaty 60fps goodness.

F ZeRO GX is crap compared to wipeout.
The track design in fzero is utterly boring and unchallenging.
The only thing going for fzero is it's graphics and speed; the graphics really aren't that nice either, it's the scenery which makes it look pleasing.
The tracks in Wipeout are usually more technical and require you to take the perfect line into a corner so it's more rewarding getting that perfect lap.
Wipeout fusion was the exeption... fusion felt like a bastardised version of FZERO, handling was crap - like fzero, track designs were boring - like fzero, you were stuck to the track - like fzero, they might as well give your vehicle wheels.

Wipeout 2097 >>WipE'out">>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>wipeout3>> ridge racer >>>FEzero>Fusion

:lol

Hmm, hopefully I'll get to play F-ZeroGX sometime this year and then make my own conclusions. I expet it to be the greatest videogame ever.

If you call "landing a tripple boost + jump + spinattack and soaring over 20 racers and an abyss to completely shortcut a U-turn" boring and unchallenging --- then yea.

but I'll trust you on the Wipeout tips -- otherwise you have no taste and I'm done talking to you.
