Wireless Network Issues

Earlier today I lost connection to my network. Couldnt get it going again. So I have a new adapter in, and it picks up the network, but while the signal is great, my transfer speed drops between 34+ mbps and 11 mbps, its all over the place.

Ideas? Makes it hard to play desert combat ;P

Do any of your neighbors have wireless phones? If they are on the 2.4 GHz band (the most popular these days), it can cause interference.

it just started today, maybe someone bought one. Any way for me to get around that. This is frustrating.

but signal strength is great, so a phone they buy could be totally fucking with my network? goddamnit.

Short of moving the access point, not really. A good way to maybe tell is if the drops are sporadic, or at predictable intervals. If they're all over the place, it could be a good indicator that someone's using a cordless phone on the same frequency.

i'm no expert on this stuff, but can't you change the channel that the router is on? i remember when i was setting mine up, i had it set to the default and i had all kinds of similar trouble with it. then when i reinstalled it i switched the channel and it works great.

a neighbor could have gotten a channel bonding AP/router. those will fuck up your signal good. grab a copy of netstumbler and change channels (11 and 1 are usually the clearest. 6, since it's the manufacturer default for almost every unit, is the worst)

Whats weird is the xbox does ok. So I dunno whats going on. Trying to change the channel on the router but forgot the password set for its admin page.
