With physical games being supported until January 2028, do you think the PS6 will be released in 2027 or 2028?

2027 or 2028?

I think 2028 is the plan now, but I'm not sure it actually happens. I really think it would be a mistake to neuter the amount of ram or release anywhere close to a 1000. And I'm guessing they will feel the same at Sony.

Sounds like at least one of the variants will launch in 2027. Neither will have a disk drive though, and Sony will stop printing PS5 disks in 2028. After that, all cross-gen games (which will more or less be all games for a few years) will be digital only no matter what your platform.

I'll guess fall 2028.

That'll give gamers almost a full year to absorb no more disc games. So when it launches, all the new games coming out are digital only which fits.

Holiday 2027. I don't think the physical disc narrative has changed that. Could even be a means to let people know that out of jump the console is primarily designed to be a digital console.

I still believe that there will be the optional disc drive to have PS5 owners play their PS5 games on the PS6 and do any upgrades via proof of ownership of game and all that. If they don't do that then I'd find that weird. Your PS5 games will only play on a PS5 console unless you double dip and buy them digitally.

I was Team 2028, but I don't think SIE'd want to go damn near a whole year after ending physical discs for new games to have diehards actually "feel" the effect of that with late PS5 releases before PS6 drops.

Could actually convince more of them to skip PS6 if they don't end up liking the digital-only reality of PS5 that'd exist in 2028 (reprints of old games aside, which would likely be very low in volume anyway since, well, they aren't new games).

Curious to see how they market the thing; if it's just more of the same and now with negatives like no physical support for new games, plus higher-than-expected (compared to the old norm) pricing, I genuinely don't see PS6 pushing past 70 million lifetime and that's WITH the rumored handheld in there too.

To me, the announcement made it clear that the PS6 is releasing Fall 2027.

It's like when Nintendo announced the Virtual Game Cards. This a feature meant for Switch 2, that they announced beforehand, so that everyone could familiarize first, before Switch 2.

This is an indication that the PS6 is going to be Digital only and for that reason, every game needs to be digital.

Also for backwards compatibility: They can say every new PS5 game can be played on PS6, but since it's digital only, and new PS5 games are also digital only, then they are going to be compatible.

The existence of a Disc Add-on is going to be weird, because if they make one, it's definitely for backwards compatibility (PS4, maybe even PS3, PS2 and PS1 games), but what about PS5 games? If they allow PS5 games with an add-on, then why would they make them digital only starting 2028?

I think the digital only games is a PS6 thing, which will (collaterally) affect the later PS5 releases. For that reason, the console should release at the end of 2027 or Q1 2028 at the latest.

I think there are more reasons than ever to launch it in 2028. I've always said here that I believe Sony will release a new portable in late 2027. That device has always been designed as a digital-only system. So launching a digital-only portable in 2027, while ending physical game support around the same time, would create a double push toward digital purchases. Yep, people simply wouldn't have other option, but the portable itself would be an extra incentive.

On top of that, Sony would have several months before the PS6 launch to track sales trends and see whether the loss of physical games actually hurts the business.

Q4 2027. Will have a meager few games at launch, mostly bolstered by cross-gen stuff like Interstellar.

Tough to call. If they've locked in their component deals in and planned for 2027 then they're already full steam ahead.

If it isn't locked in they may have some time to try to negotiate prices or risk prices going up/down.

Personally I'm more curious which studios they tasked to make a ps6 title. I assume their plan is naughty dog intergalactic being cross platform.

Otherwise… no one is buying this day one without some kind of game.

Seems like the consensus is still Holiday 2027.

I think that actually fits with them discontinuing blu-ray production in early 2028. There will certainly be a significant crossgen period, so nixing discs before the PS6 launches, even if that system is strictly digital, doesn't make sense.

November 2027... Thats the typical cycle time, don't know why they would change it.

We currently just don't know how they want to convince us to buy it for the probably insane prices we currently expect. From the hardware I am really happy with PS5/PS5Pro, and just for "faster and better graphics" might not be enough.

I don't understand why some people think that the PS6 can't launch before they stop making PS5 discs.

Don't see a correlation between those two events.

PS6 will launch with no disc drive.

2028 January date is relevant only for PS5.

2027 Holidays with:

- GoW L
- Intergalactic (probably)
- Some Major Third Party Exclusives
- Indie delights

No Disc Drive, nothing. $699 lock it.

Holiday 27. They don't have to wait for the blu-ray printers to go offline.

Yeah, but the price of RAM and SSDs is still high, and I would think Sony would be trying to do everything they can to supplement the cost. If moving the console to 2028 helps them, then that's what they may end up doing.

2028 they need people coping with the physical thing before they release the console. But I see they releasing the handheld in 2027

They should disband the whole ps6 project. Dip out for the overpriced components.

Use the existing hardware install base to sell games.

Come back 2030

Holidays 2027 ofc, sony stoping disc production jan 2028 onwards means they predict vastly reduced demand for those games which can mean only one thing, something gonna happen by holidays 2027 that most hardcore playstation fans will move on, what could that something be if not ps6 launch(which is all digital)?

Sony wont delay launch of ps6 to holidays 2028 for the simple reason, their currentgen console(ps5/pr0) sales slowing down a lot(price hikes affect budget concious casual buyers), which means they still got 1,5years of very slow console sales anyways, they dont want to stretch that low console sales to 2,5years(if ps6 launch happened holidays 2028).

Ninny delayed switch2 launch only coz og switch was selling like hotcates in later years. How we know switch2 was delayed? Its 2021 tech, every bit of it, including its gpu being made on 8nm samsung manufacturing process, like all other ampere gpus, and those were on the market back in 2021 already.

If they don't back down on the no Blue-Ray thing, and unless Bloodborne 2 comes out and is excusive, which i highly doubt, Sony is probably trying to make Concord 2 before this, i will keep happily with my PC

Maybe later. I don't think this stop physical date necessarily needs to correlate with the start of next gen. As of right now launching a PS5 handheld is imo the only thing that makes remotely sense. To maybe get Japan. But any other device will need to be priced way above usual console levels and the transition phase will be crazy long and slow. Worst case, true exclusives will not make sense for a decade.

Those are some well thought-out reasons. Taking them into account, I can see SIE going that route. The main hurdle to the PS6 portable would still be price relative perceived value, tho its portability might help in that aspect compared to the console which for all intents and purposes, is just going to be another square slab sat under (or beside) the TV.

They might also not have upgraded PS6 versions of cross-gen games ready by late 2027, which would be another reason to prioritize the handheld for that timeframe and hold off on the console until 2028. Still would say SIE have a LOT of work cut out for them though even if taking this route; the amount of goodwill they've burned with pockets of their diehard fanbase over the news last week can't be understated. It's been a disaster, and that handheld has to be the next best thing since Christ himself (or close to it) to attempt repairing the damage ASAP.

Because the pockets of their diehard fanbase that are upset with them right now, may not number highest among the install base, but they likely have a strong overlap with who would be the early adopters for new hardware & product launches. If early adopter rates are sluggish, that can impact uptick among others in the install base, making them less likely to jump in. Plus, without the typical cost reduction cycle from generations past, slow early adoption just retains overall pricing higher (and longer) for those that'd buy in later. I.e even more risk-averse to subsidize through sales promos, let alone outright price drops.

November 2027.

I also expect Sony will sell a disc drive add-on for PS6 for backwards compatibilitt with PS4/5 discs and for Blu-Rsy enthusiasts, but no PS6 SKUs will include the drive since PS6 games will be digital only.

The add-on drive will be overpriced, understocked, and scalped.

2027 makes the most sense with discs ending right after it launches, as that shows a switching point between the two platforms.

I think it'll be fall 2028, but agree with the rest of your post.

I'm thinking it'll be fall 2028 to give gamers all year to ween themselves off discs so when the console launches, everyone is already accustomed to digital only by then for new games.

I'd prefer it if Sony sat on the PS6 for a few years, so as the prices of components continue to rise, they would be able to sell the PS6 at a "bargain" price having assembled the components when they were cheaper. It would still be an expensive console, but become a very economic alternative to PC. IMO, this is the smart decision. But they probably won't make it.

Sony are going to stop disc production in January 2028 so that seems intentionally set to ease transition of PS5/PS5 Pro owners over to buying games digitally before they drop the PS6 later that year. I think November 2027 would be too soon for the PS6 personally but we'll see.

Not that I care as I will not be buying a PS6.
