Would it be worth getting an Xbox now?

As in, this late into its lifecycle? Just I played Halo 2 with 2 other people a couple nights ago, and it was really fun. I can only imagine 8-16 players on those maps, it'd be really really sweet.

But I'm against buying a console for one title, though there are others on Xbox that I wouldn't mind playing either. Plus modding an Xbox makes it worth the price totally.

Maybe I'll do it like...today...haha..... :S

Yes, but if you take your modded XBox to Live you get perma-banned.

No, if you are foolish and you leave your modchip switch on when you log into live, you get banned.

exactly my thinking ... on the modding side of things at least. I bought one today.

...actually Halo 2 wasnt that big a factor, but it did make me buy Halo to see what all the fuss was about. I'm not overly impressed yet, I've enjoyed Chronicles of Riddick far more.

I like all the Star Wars games on Xbox too. They were a big part of the sell. Here's why I went for it: A years worth of gaming isn't a bad deal... plus ATI and MS may have sussed out emulating nVida specific code for backwards compatability. Which would rock obviously.

I bought my Xbox for Halo 1 and wasn't dissapointed. Between Halo 1 and Rainbow 6 I think my Xbox was worth it. If you can make it happen then I say do it. The online component alone says that you will earn your money back in fun.

You want Conker yes?

Only if it delivers, I don't have any faith in Rare anymore really :P

I was wondering about modding too, it seems MS is somewhat up-to-date with modchips, and they'll find ways to ban people from Live eventually. Also I guess I just want to play Halo 2, but I doubt I'll be able to find it for a while.

the general consensus now on xbox-scene is as long as you keep in your stock hard drive, you should be ok.

me, i run everything off disc. no problems yet.

If you can afford it just get it.

Yeah, easily, especially since I'd split the cost with my brother. I'm just a little anxious about splurging like that, though there is a 4 day weekend coming up (starts Thursday :D).

Anyone know if there's a Halo 2 + Xbox package in Canada? Maybe they're not sold out...

How big is the stock HD? Is it a pain not being on a 120GB..?

Get a mod with a switch, I don't think theres any feesable way MS could see it there without it being in the loop. edit: oh yeah and the hard drive issue as mentioned above.

They were banning those with Halo 2 saves before release though I think. I think you'll see more things like that. So if you want to play the game online, buy it legitimately.

Damn, I just realised you can play Stepmania on Xbox, which would be nicer output than I get off my PC to TV....

Expect another "I just bought an Xbox thread" within a week :lol

8 or 10 gig depending on model.

personally, i keep NOTHING on my hard drive. nothing in any partition... but i'm a bit paranoid.

if you've got a dvd burner, you'll be good.

a modded Xbox is the bees knees dude. I can't recommend it enough.

if you bought a stock Xbox and never got on XBL... how would Microsoft know if you modded your 'Box? As far as I know, they're banning people who have been caught using a different HD than the one they had previously been on XBL with. or something! it's all so confusing. I have two XBoxes, one for XBL and the other for all my mod needs.

No need to buy an xbox, remember it only has one good game which is halo. Also halo 2 is repetitive and a sequel to halo so why waste your money. If you want good gaming buy a ps2 with all the original titles and no sequels, better yet buy a gamecube :D

If you enjoy lots of 3rd party games then an Xbox is for you. More often than not you'd be buying the best version of a multi platform 3rd party game too. That's just one of the reasons why I bought one.

All I own for the Xbox anymore is Madden NFL 2004, Madden NFL 2005, ESPN NBA 2K5, Halo, Halo 2, Knights of the Old Republic and Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance.

It's been worth it for me!

If you have the extra money and like to play video games I would reccomend it, definitely.

This may not be the "industry correct" answer, but the XBox is so hackable ... you can play hundreds of old school NES/SNES/Genesis/Atari/arcade titles emulated on it, that its worth it just for that.

I'd say... wait a bit more, until MS announces the features on its Xenon or the next price drop on the Xbox.

I haven't bought an Xbox yet either, but I have bought two games for it. Just waiting for the magic price tag (NINETY NINE NINETY NINE!).

BTW, those two games are Kingdom Under Fire and Panzer Dragoon Orta. KUF being the first exclusive game i wanted for Xbox (made me want an Xbox) and PDO because it was only $5.

Go for it man, and modding the box and playing on Live hasn't been a problem for me, just remember not to log on with the box in modded mode.

Standard hard drive is not a problem for me, I used to have an 80gig drive in there but took it out because I did something stupid to it and killed it, I don't miss it. I play all my games off disc and stream any media I want to watch from my PC.

Damn, I'm really sold. One of my buddies will solder the chip for me for free as well, and help me out with whatever else.

Yeah I played old school games on my XBox just as much if not more than regular games (and no, its not like these games are commercially availible anyway, so I don't feel bad about it).

The other day I had some buddies over and we were playing arcade perfect Street Fighter II (the old school arcade hacked version where you can throw "bouncing" fireballs and other crazy stuff), arcade perfect Moonwalker, and arcade perfect Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Konami).

It was great.

Since its iffy that XBox 2 will even have a HDD and probably a less PC-ish architecture, I don't think you'll be able to do this kind of stuff with it as easily (if at all).

IMO, now that Halo 2 is out the only really worthwhile titles in the pipeline are Jade Empire and KOTOR 2. But I'd still heavily recommend picking up an Xbox, it's been my primary console this gen.

Yeah, that's one of the main reasons I started this thread, just I would've rather purchased an Xbox much earlier in its lifecycle than now. Really, I just want the most modable system, but looking at next gen, the formats (Bluray, etc...) used probably won't be as easy to exploit as they are now.

Hehe I actually have a friend who beta tests Jade Empire ^_^

+1 Edmonton!

BUY:
Panzer Dragoon Orta
KOTOR
KOTOR II (only a few weeks, now!)

If you work retail, go to xbox.com/retail and fill out the quizzes to get Fable, Halo, Munch, and all MS published Xbox games (or most of them anyway).

If you can't do that, wait for a little while on Halo or skip it entirely. Also, I'd wait for Ninja Gaiden to drop (because it should relatively soon) to pick it up.

Good, I thought I was only one who knew who that was :P

I think the xbox is a great purchase, I might pick one up when I finally have some free time...

**looks at thick layer of dust on PS2 & GC***

...maybe over the summer.

Really, I just want Third Strike, in my home. I'll get a nice stick for sure.

Goddamn, I've wasted way too much money on that game at the arcade, probably like $500 easily :lol
