Would you recommend Riddick to someone who doesn't really like FPSs?

I crave new games and Riddick is about the nearest release of any quality in the next fortnight (that and I am being seduced by the graphics). But the rub is that I'm not all that kosher with first person games. It's not that I dislike them is just that I'm very, very, very bad with (or at) them. The whole not seeing myself disorientates me and cries of "what, wait, where are they shooting me from, who, how do I get off this ladder" etc. are not uncommon when I play them. With that being said I've read stuff from CoR's developers that they wanted to try and evolve beyond the feeling of a dismember gun floating around, which I find encouraging. I've also heard stuff that Riddick's a bit more than a shooter.

So things I need to know, is it easy? Or at least can I select a lower difficulty level? What sort of stuff does it have away from more traditional FPS gameplay (I've heard stuff about trading items with other prisoners)? Basically do you think I could get over my aversion to the perspective to enjoy it?

I used to feel like you about FPS but the more you play them the better you get at them. I'd say go ahead and pick it up.

It's half FPS, half Beat 'em up. A lot of the time you'll rely only on your fists, you might have weapons but they will be taken away at some point.

It's great fun, lots of sneaking and few sporadic points of RPG-esque gameplay while you are trying to solve problems for other people (and yourself). Expect lots of action and seeing your fists.

If the perspective bothers you that much this game won't change it. It atleast makes a decent effort at making the game "body-aware" so you'll see your shoulders and the rest from a realistic perspective and the movement feels like an actual body moving instead of a sliding robot.

How's the sneaking? Is it spotted and you're pretty much dead, or is it just to gain an advantage but if you are spotted you can overcome the situation?

Mostly the latter. You can choose to be much more forceful than you have to be most of the time.

I'll call it realistic within the confines of the game. Since you have only your fists (maybe other things but I won't spoil) and your enemies have guns you are at a severe disadvantage. If it's only one guard then you won't have much of a problem but there are always instances of other guards in the area hearing or noticing your movements so it's always useful to sneak.

It's really a mix of both, you can be dead if you are found but it depends on the situation. If you are excellent at the hand-to-hand fighting mechanics then quickly "manipulating" their weapons to end their life will solve the problem.

That sounds alright then.

Well I think I shall definitely give Riddick a go. I am gradually aclimatising myself to FPSs. I can actually move around without looking at either the floor or the ceiling now, which is a lot of progress for me.

The game starts out slowly (not in a boring way). It will gradually introduce the mechanics for you at a nice pace. I shall warn you however to take the time to adjust to the game within the early sections in order to be fully prepared for the onslaught that will occur later on. Oh and a quick tip, get used to using your fists (shivs included) FAST.

Riddick's got sort of a variation on Master Chief's refilling-shield working for him -- you've got a certain number of 'squares' of health, and if you can successfully get away from a firefight for long enough, his health will refill to the top of the current square. In other words, if you've got 3 and just one baby microscopic sliver of a 4th, you can regain that full fourth if you can get out of sight and take a breather for a few seconds. It gives you just that much more bravado when you've only got a screwdriver and need to take on a guard with a machine gun, knowing that as long as you can get away before he takes off a full square you'll still be good.

A word of warning though -- MAKE SURE YOU'VE GOT AT LEAST 50 BUCKS ON YOU WHEN YOU'RE GOING INTO THE LOWER MINES. You'll save yourself a whole crapload of trouble. I spent the last of my money on goddam cigarettes before going down and was cursing the game to high heaven for hours.

Yes. For some reason I really enjoyed that game. The overall effect of the game is much greater than the sum of its parts.

I don't want to start a new thread so I'll ask here:

Does the full version of Riddick look as crappy as the demo? I just bought the exhibition disc with the riddick demo on it and the looks of the game are putrid. Low res, aliasing all around, and screen tearing galore. I've seen some videos on G4TV which look way different and I'm thinking to myself, "Is this the same game?". Please tell me this is a demo only related problem and the final is fixed. I'd like to try it out but I can't play a game with all that tearing going on.

I generally don't care for first person shooters (didn't like Halo) but I really like Riddick.

The graphics?

I'd say it's easily one of the top 3 best looking action games on the system, and I've got the full version.

it still seems to go low rez occassionally during cutscenes, which is annoying because it does look bad. the rest of the game looks great. if this is really going to bother you, just hold out for the pc version (which i may end up getting because the dvd drive is still giving dde's :/)

I felt the same way as you after playing the demo. After some time with the full version, however, I can say that the demo was a fluke. The final game looks absolutely fantastic.

That said, I'm really loving it so far. The integration of story and gameplay is top notch. Other than Halo and maybe BF1942 to a lesser extent, it's really the only FPS that's grabbed me.

I'm not a hardcore FPS player. I've gone a few rounds in Halo, and I enjoyed that for sure. Back in the day I loved the Doom games. Otherwise I skip out on a lot of FPS.
So, one day I pick up CoR mostly based on the hype for it. The gameplay is rather sophisticated, mixing stealth and shooting action, mixing brawling and weapons; The environments are fairly interactive, you can crawl around in vents and climb things. The graphics have great looking effects.
Sounds great so far. Unfortunately the game left me feeling quite bored. I'm not sure why, but I think the movie liscence and Diesel's mug all over the place plays a large role.
This game's story(imo) is crap. Vin Diesel in this game(imo) is crap.
While this game may have some aspects of a game like Deus Ex or a Nintendo adventure it never reaches the same scope gameplay wise, rather it feels like connect the plot points in the story by lumping through uninspired gameplay hoops. Imo, the art direction aint that great either. You're basically tethered to a virtua Vin Diesel ego trip. Done as well as it is that's still not enjoyable for me.
Some xbox games I'd suggest over this: Splinter Cell: PD, Ninja Gaiden, Halo
