WTF happened with Umbrella Academy

So I watched season 1, really good except for that guy that was stealing a role meant for a straight woman.

And I get to season 2, and all of a sudden, because they can't find a message of racism that relevant to modern times, they go to the 60's and every single white person transforms to the worst racist homophobe I've seen on TV in a long time.

Was the comic like this too or was Netflix adding it's own flavor of guilt into the season?

It was fine having some representation, but it dialed up the woke messaging with all the white people being racist bigots or criminals. The one straight white husband being a neglective drunk.

Or the one white lady who's actually decent turning gay all of a sudden. The message I get is, if you're not Black or Gay, you're a hateful biggot.

And it's a shame cause season 1 did a great job of telling a story of how it's hard to be different without having modern political bias shoehorned in

From what I can remember they don't go back in time after stopping White Violin and number 4 Klaus stops the asteroid impact with telekinesis in the comics.

Whilst the Netflix show hit the same plot beats as the comics they are nothing alike.

Good to know, may just read this and replace my head cannon

Yes, it was woke BS. The whole thing could have been wrapped up early if the siblings just talked but, no, it had to drag on forever.

I think we watched different shows. They did touch on racism but it was only a small part of the season and fit in with the politics of the 60’s.

If anything it shows how anti-racist things are today compared to back then.

That's def a take on it, but it was never addressed like that in the show. It's more like they wanted to make a season that said these messages to the audience but couldn't do it explicitly in modern era.

And with how well they did being subtle but powerful with messaging in the first season, it was disappointing

I think it was a little more than touched on.

Well one of the character becomes a black activist, which makes it an important plot point but also makes a lot of sense for a modern black woman going back to the time of segregation. Just like it makes sense for the hero wannabe to try and save Kennedy.
The show clearly had its agenda of contrasting moral values of the 60s and modern ones, but it's not exactly out of place. Maybe it was overkill to have both a black activist and a lesbian couple as plot points. The second one feeling forced because I don't remember the character being gay last season, while we know Page's stance on that topic, but it felt perfectly natural with Klaus.
