Anyone bothered by the fact that the GotY didn't even win best game in it's catagory?

Halo 2's greatness exceeds any and all genres! It doesn't need a catagory, it IS the catagory...it...I...need to calm down...

I'm pretty sure that X-Play disqualifies the GotY from it's own category so it doesn't win both awards.

BTW, OMG no Nintendo games? X-Play is teh biased. :P

When they listed the GOTY games I said to myself "Why put Halo 2 in there when HL2 already beat it in Best FPS, Halo has no chance to win." I wasn't bothered but I was a little confused as to what their reasons would be.

Most gaming mag awards exclude the GOTY winner from the genre category too, I always thought it was pretty standard by now.

Pretty good selections IMO. Not exactly what I would have chosen but nothing SpikeTV Awards-level dumb. I caught the last half of the show last night so I had been wondering about the other winners.

Halo 2 is so damn good. Aside from the ending problem some people had with it, it's such an awesome, polished, and fun product. Worth every penny. Online and offline, it gives back so much. The weapons, think of the weapons. The graphics are top notch. AI is in there in spades. Story is interesting and voice acting is great. Controls are tight.

I hate to, uh... be a hater, but I can't see Halo 2 as game of the year. Online game of the year maybe, but the single player is kind of unremarkable compared to Half Life 2.

Kind of like how HL2's multiplayer is unremarkable compared to Halo 2. It's a compromise, and X-Play made the right call, IMO.

Aside form the fighting category this is pretty predictable.

I was confused on the fighting catagory one. SF:AC wasn't even nominated. Or maybe it was disqualified since it's technically a 5 year old and a 12 year old game?

Watching the show it was pretty clear that HL2 won best FPS on the strength of it's single player, while Halo 2 won GOTY because of the combination of single player and the incredible multiplayer.

But HL2 also had CS:S bundled with it, which is pretty good online. and the SP in Halflife 2 is > than that in Halo 2.

I dunno about Halo 2 being GOTY, if you include hype into the decision then yes I can see that it could be chosen.

edit : vvv - so true :)

Hahaha no one will fucking agree on the two games, let's just give it up right here before this gets stupid.

Just like we gave up on Sega vs. Nintendo before it got stupid, then DS vs. PSP, then...

Oh wait a second.

Carry on!

See the difference is that SP in Halo 2 is nearly as great as HL2 SP, but CS:S maybe pretty good while Halo 2 online is simply incredible.

Well, then they should of said "Best Online Game: Halo 2"!

Bottom line, Half-Life 2 should of won GotY.

Real bottom line, if RE4 had come out last year this discussion would be mute.

bottom line Halo2 is more fun than HL2 cause of the online play.

I think MGS3 got the shaft hardcore.... didn't even get looked at for Action/Adventure, while SC:PT, MP2, and PoP: WW were all taken above it. Not that those were bad games, but c'mon here...

and to have Ratchet and Clank nominated for GoTY?
