According to The Hollywood Reporter and this Friday story in Empire Online, Marvel and Fox have hired screenwriter Simon Kinberg, who previously labored on Marvel’s upcoming “Elektra” and “Fantastic Four” movies, to pen a script for the third "X-Men" feature.

Kinberg also authored screenplays for the upcoming "XXX" sequel and Doug Liman's upcoming Brad Pitt romantic thriller "Mr. and Mrs. Smith."

Writer-director Joss Whedon - the “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Firefly” mastermind who’s currently in post-production on “Serenity,” his feature directorial debut - is receiving much critical acclaim for his work writing the ongoing comic-book series “Astonishing X-Men,” and in August expressed interest in directing the third “X-Men” movie.

Sources reveal that Whedon has subsequently been in discussions with the franchise’s producers but also that no "X3" deal with Whedon has yet been struck.

Better be good. I was hoping for Whedon.

I really like the films, so I was hoping Joss was on board, but at the same time maybe this will free him up for a new TV project. Or the Serenity sequel when it makes shit loads as we all go to see it 5 times each RIGHT GUYS?!

Anyway, I don't know this guy and none of those films are out (are they?) so I won't judge yet.

whedon turns the Xmen into something out of Buffy. They all seem 18.

Does every single character have identically snarky, attitude-laden dialogue, with no discernible difference between one speaker and another? That sure as hell is what Whedon did with Alien Resurrection.

When I showed AR to a friend of mine once, the first thing she said after 30 minutes was, "Why does Ripley sound like Buffy?"

Hayter needs to be working on a new live action Guyver dammit!

No, no one from the first two is still around, at least on the creative side.

I can't help but be disappointed considering the things that I've heard about Fantastic Four. I loved X2, I think it's the best blockbuster to come out during the last couple years. Singer raised the bar so far past X-Men, and I really wish we could see him push it further with the Phoenix saga. At least we should get a really good Superman out of this, but I'd rather see more of Singer's X-Men. He had most of the characters down, he'd created some awesome sequences and X2 was really ramping up the epic tone. I hope, really hope that somehow X3 is worthy as a followup.

Bryan Singer can go fuck himself for dropping out of X3 and deciding to direct a film about one of the most boring characters ever created instead. Mr. Buffy is going to be his replacement, eh? FUCK THIS SHIT.

You could hardly blame them if they did bring Joss Whedon on board. His comics are getting both huge acclaim and huge sales for the same franchise, it's hard to believe they wouldn't be considering him.

The articles a bit confusing though, naming a different script writer and Joss too.

Just another confirmation about X3's plot from Superman V:
There's more good news for X-Men fans, because, Shuler-Donner said that she is looking forward to continuing with the X-Men franchise and that X-3 will continue with the Dark Phoenix saga. After X-3 there may be a Wolverine movie.
I'm not really sure what they'd do with a Wolverine movie. X2 seemed to wrap up a lot of his history, or at least wrap up Logan's interest in it.

For everyone moaning about the possibility of Whedon writing any of X3: Firefly is a good example of Whedon writing a ensemble cast with vastly different and conflicting personalities. It makes me think Whedon haters are just looking for trouble when they try to claim the Firefly characters all sound alike as well. There's maybe one guy - Walsh - who is a "Whedon regular" and the intentionally snarky comic. Some other people have wit (oh my god, too many witty people!) too, but bloody hell. Inara, Book, Simon, River, and Kaylee (sp) were anything but this supposed Whedon stereotype of snarky co-eds.

My ideal Superman film has him:

a) fighting bank robbers
b) getting cats out of trees
c) flying old ladies across the street
d) contains at least one "Great Caesar's Ghost!"

I would pay $20 to see this film in a theater.

Just to be weird, I think this may be the first trilogy I've watched where I enjoy the second film over the other two.

Err, no wait, BTTF. Damn it to hell.

EDIT: And errr, just so I don't nipped in the bud for this post. I don't view either trilogy as emotionally strong and engrossing to watch, as the other trilogies I mentioned in a certain post.
