X360 > Xbox 360?

XBox is a really stupid name. Admit it. It's... X... BOX. BOX! YAY.

No...

But given that MS have already run a generation with the XBox name... would it be better to go with a less dorky (only marginally I guess) X360 or continue on with XBox 360... which is an absolute mouthful of try hard geekiness.

Thoughts?

Xbox is a fine name. Gamecube is the worst name, to me. It just screams uncool, or unmacho. As a marketing person, I would have never picked it. Playstation is okay.

i would just refer to it as 360. like when I say Windows, I don't say "Microsoft Windows", I just say Windows.

Xbox 360 is finally growing on me... though I still think it's far worse than PlayStation, Dreamcast or GameCube. I still long for Xenon. :(

Xenon is a cool name, but I don't think it would register with consumers.

"Hey man, I just got a Xenon."

"What's that?"

"It's the new Xbox."

"Oh. What's a Xenon?"

"Beats me."

Macho is the last thing I would want to be, personally. And I really don't care what registers with consumers.

Xbox 360 isn't the worst name ever, but I don't really care for it. When you break down PlayStation or GameCube, they both sound amazingly stupid as well, but if you're just taking it for face value, I think PlayStation sounds cool, and GameCube isn't bad.

i dont care about branding or whatever.

say PS3 and then say X BOX THREE SIXTY then say xenon

Imagine trying to build a successful brand of cheese sticks on the name "stinkles"... that's how the Xbox is.

But why Xbox 360? That's the best they could come up with? I'd even take Xbox HD or Xbox 2 over that. :/

Every time is say Xbox I think of:

Xpac

I then thing of:

Chyna

I then think of:

Their Sex Vid

It is a bad circle of destruction which rots my brain

X360 is good for me, leave out the box part!!

I really don't think your average consumer will care, as long as they know it's the "cool new Xbox"

Playstation is only okay now because it's associated with the games that made it popular and with popularity and success in general. Remember when the name was announced a decade ago? Playstation, Playskool, Play Doh, Play Toy, or Plaything as the Sega commercial called it. It really sounded like something for the kiddies at the time.

eh, its memorable and it's got people talking (see this thread). also leaves it open to make things seem exclusive... GTA 360, Ninja Gaiden 360, etc

Xbox HD doesn't roll off the tongue, sounds more like an Xbox add-on than a new system. Xbox 2 is decent but leaves it without it's own identity... just a mere sequel to a system that did ok.

xbox 360 doesnt roll off either

I always thought the name Xbox was kind of cool. Gamecube on the other hand, now that is pretty stupid and laughable. Couldn't believe they chose that. :lol I used to think the same about PlayStation, just sounds gay. But over time you just get so used to them it no longer matters. And yeah, the codename's are always the coolest (which is why Xbox is cool, it was the codename). Dolphin was cool, Xenon is cool, Blackbelt was awesome. But I think the compaines try to hard to have a name that tells you what it is (PlayStaton, GameCube) which is just... UGH! Might as well just call it Gaming System, which is of course dumb.

I think the name is fine. It's much less pansy than Dreamcast or Playstation. I hated saying "Dreamcast" when talking to retailers, especially those in non-gaming stores. Xenon would be way too difficult for your average salesperon to pronounce, and it would get butchered. Xbox 360 is much easier for your typical retailers who know nothing about games to understand. :lol

Playstation and gamecube both sound like toys, "playstation" sounding like childrens' multi play station device. "Gamecube" being an extension of "gameboy".

Xbox sounds generic because of the 'X'. The 'X' is just as generic as they come becuase in mathematics 'X' is always used to substitute for the unknown, just as Product-X, Brand-X or X-factor. Then to come up with 'X'-Box is just very un-creative.

I'd rather just the 360. X360 sounds like the name of a prototype fighter jet from the 1950s.

But most people won't call it Xbox Three Sixty, just like most people don't call it the Sega Dreamcast or the Sony Playstation Two. "Three Sixty," "PS3," same amount of syllables. One doesn't roll of the tongue better than the other.

Heh, I was about to say the same thing. I like "360" more than Xbox360 or X360. The whole "X-" thing was lame to start with, anyway. So is "360" for that matter, but it seems as though console companies are incapable of coming up with genuinely cool names nowadays, and besides that.....I really don't give a flying shit.

Playstation is the worst name... sounds like something out of a Star Trek preschool.... why do you guys think they changed it to "PS1", "PS2", and "PSP". You dont see people calling Gamecube, "GC" (they may do it on forums, but I've never heard somebody call it by the letters), or call the Xbox, "XB" or something... PS by far is the worst name. Admit it!! :lol

But Xbox 360 is pretty bad also... I'm still waiting for an explanation on that one.

I've heard people say "GC." I think I've used it on occasion, as well. More often that not, though, my friends and just call it the 'Cube. "Is that coming out on the 'Cube?" "Bring your 'Cube with you." That sort of thing.

X360, Xbox 360, it's really dumb either way. X2 sounds good to me, but I guess it could've been mixed up with X-Men or Final Fantasy.

why do people spend so much time giving a shit about stuff like this? In 3 months we'll all be used to saying Xbox 360 just like we got used to Gamecube and Xbox and PSP and Playstation and Gameboy, ect...

It's not really the same thing. It's really Microsoft Xbox 360, which is quite a mouthful.

People say Sony Playstation sometimes, and I know A LOT of the time they refer to DC as Sega Dreamcast. Everyone says Nintendo Gamecube.
