Xbox 360 Dashboard Update Delay:
We linked a story yesterday at Xboxic that broke the news of an update for the Xbox 360 dashboard. We received confirmation from Microsoft that the Xboxic information was indeed accurate and that an update was “imminent”. Unfortunately, that update was supposed to head to production today but a few minor issues pushed the target date back to Monday. There will also be a Call Of Duty 2 update hitting the following day, so next week should be a good one for Xbox 360 owners.

so what exactly are they fixing?
When downloading anything, you are stuck and can't do anything else. It's a huge pain for large files, like the game demos. Again, just a rumor that it's being addressed.

Here are a couple of excerpts where Xbox.com forum MVP Shreddies confirms the update and hints at an improved dashboard: http://forums.xbox.com/1941655/ShowPost.aspx

C:\ I think it should resolve it as it states it will contain fixes for all currently known lockups in games, missing or impossible to get achievements and a bunch of new functionality in the Dashboard !!

EDIT: Shreddies isn't employed by Microsoft however he is a moderator of their forums.

Excellent, I'm glad they're being speedy with things like this and hope the update includes some increased functionality, too.

Honestly, the backwards compatibility is such a mess I'd just drop it and use the resources from that team for dashboard updates/patches/add-ons.

edit: I guess there will be increased functionality. Nice!!

On the downside of the news, the head of the Backwards Compatibility program at Microsoft, in an interview in Edge published yesterday, says the BC team are on holiday throughout January after working so hard to make the release date - and that the next release of the BC software will "definitely be at some point in 2006" - but that's it.

Read that as November.

I don't know if this bit of 'news' has been confirmed yet.

sigh. ;)

What would you guys do if I wasn't up this late at night?

After reading the comments on xboxic about me confirming this I would like to say that is false, my comments are based on their article not on knowledge. As I stated previously in my post I am not told anything by Microsoft on future releases and that any information would be made available by a press release

That interview took something out of context. It was quoting a MS employee who said that the team was taking a bit of vacation this month, except he said it in early December 2005. This was in an early December Major Nelson podcast.

The BC team is back at work.

November isn't true. [/fact]

It's been hinted at elsewhere (I can't find any sources atm) that a BC release looks likely in the spring. I personally think that's much more likely, but frankly, I haven't heard a whit beyond that the BC team is at work.

It's about damn time CoD2 got updated. What the hell took them so long?

So is this Dashboard update just a general bug fix or can we expect some new features?

Oh nothing...just a complete boycott of their game coming out of their active and vocal community of fans, that's all.

Is there another source for this? First I've heard about it. I don't get any third party info, so I'm not saying it's false. I just haven't seen it anywhere beyond [H]ardOCP and it would be nice to get it confirmed.

Only speculation of the existance, timing and content. There's nothing else available.

If Live is still stupid like it was on Xbox one they can only update so often, also do they still shut Live down on like Thursday from 2am-4am? Those were two things that really annoyed me about Live.

This is the first I've heard of it too, but I'll be thrilled if it's true. Namco needs to get on the ball and update Ridge Racer as well. I'd have given both of those games a lot more playtime by now if the developers would've dealt with the problems already.

I hope they update the issue with downloading large files from marketplace. For some people it drops the connection way too often. Usually starts at 5% or 50% straight up and then just times out. Wierd bug - many have it.

COD2 PATCH!

It's been a long time coming too.

Damn well better address all of the online issues as well as that save issue that I have been so fortunate to not run into either.

I don't really see any way of doing it without having some downtime. That's just the nature of these things.

I told you Smash TV that your time would come! NO ONE CAN BEAT YOU WITH NO CONTINUES!

No doubt. I'd also like to see who the hell can clear wave 100 in Robotron! Glad they're fixing some of these.

You guys are jumping to conclusons... there are currently 2 games that have true unattainable achievements... Outpost Kaloki and Hearts. That's it. I don't think there are any plans to make Robotron or Smash TV easier.

If they're adding features, I hope to god they'll impliment a shuffle option for your playlists. I love the idea of being able to play my own music in every game but the fact that you can't shuffle tracks makes it a little monotonous. I've got one playlist that's over 13 hours long but I never get to hear the later tracks unless I manually skip through 'em.

Shuffle! Make it happen.

Dude. You're our man at Microsoft. Go get it confirmed! :)

The shuffle button is the one with the up and down arrow. It's already there and it works as advertised.

As I mentioned in another thread, I REALLY hope they'll change the music player structure from Genre --> Tracks to Genre --> Artists --> Albums. It is really difficult for those of us with large mp3 collections to navigate. Or if not that, then make it so when you choose Artist, then you can choose one of the 26 letters in the alphabet and jump to all artists starting with that letter. That'd be fine, too.

So glad they're releasing that CoD2 patch a week after I got hit with the bug. Thanks, guys. And for a Dashboard update, how about allowing more than 2 friggin' people in a private chat?

Anything done to improve the music player will be a huge step forward. Right now it's worse than a Flash music player circa 1999.

Would also be nice if the music player didn't stop when moving between games and the dashboard, but I doubt they'll fix that. Likely a hardware issue.

The Music Player should be the most glaring issue fixed in the Dashboard. I use my PC's collection when I play on Live; Going back to an Artist to change albums is a pain (especially if the band name starts with a Z).

All they have to do is ripoff iPod's interface for godsakes!

I also found something weird. I'm sharing two folders on my computer. One mp3 folder (+ a few album covers), and one Picture folder. Only the album covers show up in XBOX Dashboard Pictures section.

The CoD2 online setup/lag is horrible. Their not even a lobby for gamers. I'd say my favorite online experience right now is with PGR2 simply due to its consistant quality.

Also, I would really like the ability to zoom and scroll larger pictures through the picture viewer. Currently everything is resized to fit the screen.

More likely he is referring to instances like Outpost Kaloki X, which has achievements that are literally impossible to achieve (They accidently set the times to get gold metals on some levels too low). SmashTV's achievements are ridiculously hard, but not impossible.

I would be happy if it just allowed you to sort by "Album Artist" like in MCE, instead of having to scroll through the 1500 obscure artists who did guest vocals on some track somewhere.

Yeah, this would be nice. I hate having to navigate all the way back just to pick a different album from the same artist. I wonder if they will make any true changes though.

Any pictures you have in any shared folder on your computer will show up in the useless picture viewer. You can't specify "only display pictures in this folder".

Maybe they should fix the damn DVD player, it doenst work properly on SD-tv's sadly (on my CRT monitor its no problem).

What's wrong with DVD output on SDTVs?

I'm not sure what he is talking about, but one thing is certain, it sucks as a DVD player. Which is strange since it streams TS files so well.

I wish it didn't take forever to scan iPods from ingame. It wouldn't be a big deal except for the fact that it has to rescan everytime.

Also, the Play All option is made useless by the 100 song limit (unless you're streaming your music from a PC)...

Maybe they will fix the bug in billiards. I have sunk the 9-ball on the break in a game of 9-ball at least three times and I have not received my achievements yet.

how about upscaling DVDs to your dash resolution? not intelligently, just stupidly so there isn't any 'woo, HD' comments, but it just works.

alternatively use 480p/50 please MS. Respect your PAL owners

because apparently they were denied by the dvd consortium and had to remove the upscaling (or something along those lines)
