Xbox 360 - Powered by Human Energy

Tomorrow's games, designed by players as they play

Speaking at The Entertainment Gathering conference here, "Sims" creator Will Wright and Microsoft Xbox team head J. Allard both cast a spotlight on the growing role that game players will have in creating content for the biggest games.

"(Gaming) is the only medium where we yield control of the protagonist. Let's yield control of the director--and the producer," said Allard, a vice president at Microsoft. "We're going to take on the Wikipedia model. We're going to take on...the open-source model, if you will, for gaming."

"If only 1 percent of our audience that plays Halo helped construct the world around Halo, it would be more human beings than work at Microsoft corporation," Allard said. "That's how much human energy we could harness in this medium."

Lesson #3293819243: When you are at the height of public embarrassment, always turn to head-scratching obscurity to throw your tormentors and enemies off.

The full quote makes more sense:
Wright's newest game, dubbed "Spore," will populate fictional planets with animals and cities created wholly by other game players. Allard said the Xbox 360 will increasingly encourage developers to let their players add on to worlds, and even sell their creations though a central Xbox store system.

"(Gaming) is the only medium where we yield control of the protagonist. Let's yield control of the director--and the producer," said Allard, a vice president at Microsoft. "We're going to take on the Wikipedia model. We're going to take on...the open-source model, if you will, for gaming."
Ignoring the stupid claims, I hope MS gets on the ball with user-created content on the 360. I don't particularly care about the whole selling goods idea but I just want games that I can customize and create content for.

Allard told a story of meeting a 12- or 13-year-old inner-city child last year and introducing him to a basketball game on the new Xbox 360. Instead of spending hours dunking or trash-talking with his friends, the boy spent two hours creating a pair of sneakers, saying that was what he wanted to do when he grew up.
Holy shit. What supposed basketball game lets you create sneakers for TWO HOURS?

1% out of ~6000000 = ~60k

# of ms employees = ~60k

wikipedia said:
Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ: MSFT, HKEx: 4338) is the world's largest software corporation, with 2005 global annual sales of almost $40 billion USD and nearly 60,000 employees in 85 countries and regions.

I guess "more" is a relative term

So much for the theory that ALL kids these days have A.D.D.

What a shitty article.
It's nice that they want this sort of thing to happen, and I think that it already has to an extent (wasn't there an option to play your own custom maps in Timesplitters: Future Perfect over Live?) but what is written in there about this potentially happening on the 360 is almost zero.

It's all about your little sister designing Tony Hawks shoelaces and selling it on the marketplace.

Lesson No. 1 in gaming company profit increase:

Make the gamers fucking do it themselves, charge for the "honor", sit back and laugh your socks off.

same here.

I think Oblivion will be the game where MS has to prove that what Allard said at E3 was not just coming out of his arse.

When you sleep, the X360 monitors your sleep so that it can collect your lucid dreams and turn them into videogames. Now it all makes sense!

I am generally fairly unfriendly to Microsoft the corporation. I despise J Allard and his lame patronising marketing for n00bs approach.

But I like this idea. and I like Xbox Live implementation, and the x360 is a nice looking achine with a decent pad. Kudos MS. You might just dominate the living room one day the same way you dominate the PC industry. Save us Sony! Japanese ftw!
