LOS ANGELES -- Microsoft has confirmed that its upcoming XBox 360 video game console will synch with and view files stored on a variety of devices, including Apple's iPod. The capability, revealed at last week's unveiling, was discussed in further detail by Shane Kim of Microsoft's Xbox 360 division.

"We're going to integrate really well with the devices and content that people already have stored on other devices," he explained. "We demonstrated that you'll be able to access your photos and your music that's stored on other devices, CD players, an iPod, even a PSP."

The Xbox 360 will also be able to access and work with popular PDA and Bluetooth devices, such as Palm's products and Bluetooth-enabled cell phones, via its incorporated technologies. "You've got content stored on those devices. We can access it and we can play it from the Xbox 360 on your TV," said Mr. Kim.

From a more speculative viewpoint, Mr. Kim also noted that the Xbox 360 should be able to communicate with a Mac through its home networking implementation. This may become more widely used with Mac OS X's support of the Windows File Sharing protocol.

The Xbox 360 console, still in development, is due to ship in time for the 2005 holiday season.

Thta's pretty cool. I'm not getting a 360 but I like that they support PSP and Mac OS X. A welcome change from their traditional strategy. Now where is linux support? :D

The definition of sync seems to have changed... doesn't the X360 actually just stream the media from whatever device is plugged in to it's USB port?

Yeah, being able to transfer/stream stuff off my iBook and PC, as well as my iPod and PSP is really really cool. Good job MS.

Now, I'm wondering if PS3 will have the same capabilities?

Well they've already mentioned that the PSP and the PS3 will have a wireless connection.. so I'd be real surprised if you couldn't stream whatever media you have on the memory stick to your PC via the PS3.... as for other options... who knows... just like the X360 the PS3 does have USB ports so it'll be interesting to see what drivers are implemented for those ports.

That's what i was assuming. If i can truly sync my Clie with my Xbox 360 then, well, i don't know why i'd want to do that, but i'd be sure to tell everyone about it at every opportunity.

Edit: i guess you could stream pictures, music, or videos, but i'd really prefer to actually be able to sync though as BT and WiFi especially kill PDA batteries.

i've gotta say, i'm really amazed at just how flexible the Xbox 360 is. It's essentially a media PC that sounds much easier to use. i'd really like to see their long-term marketing strategy for it, especially the VelocityGirl (:lol) part.

They REALLY need to define what this means. Any device that you connect via USB that supports the HD profile will allow for this. The device will simply look like a very small hard disk.

Kim.

Same here. If you support the bluetooth storage profile this will be possible. I can bluetooth transfer files from my Treo 650 to my P910 without a hint of issue. Being able to move content around and play it isn't really a value add since its already supported in the protocols.

From a more speculative viewpoint, Mr. Kim also noted that the Xbox 360 should be able to communicate with a Mac through its home networking implementation. This may become more widely used with Mac OS X's support of the Windows File Sharing protocol.

That's a good speculation point, however Microsoft has aggfravated this in the past with its Windows Media Extender stuff which simply refused to allow a Mac running OSX to host/stream content to the box.
