xbox component video - the look

What can I say. I like the videogame look; one huge reason why I'm a console gamer. I came home for the holidays and my brother has his xbox set up as above. Huge ass tv, 100hz, etc etc. Graphics looks like they are running off a pc monitor; albeit high res. Tried a lot of his games - MGS2S, DC3, NG...+more. I give the component look a c- Very very PCish and a little too clear for my liking. NG is sharp looking but a tad too clear. You can make out the textures+Polygons too well. I really dislike the image quality.

However, on his tv, my Ps2 games plugged in via the standard wires and it looks absolutely horrid. Jaggy too hell and back. In that instance, his setup is better. Still, plugged into the 29" tv in my room here, the games still look briliant.

I don't have a high definition set like your bro has. I just play with Monster Cable components for both the PS2 and Xbox,my God though.

I'll never go back to composit. PS2's Gun Grave,Castlevania LOI are heavenly with the cables. Halo 1 and 2 along with others like Enclave,Ridick,PGR2,and RallySport are jizz worthy as well.

Its weird that your bro's set makes component games look too good. I guess you hit a point where too much detail shows flaws that would otherwise be hidden within the body of a game? Cause I dunno, the games look allot better on my standard component than they ever did in composit.

What? So you're saying that having a superior video connection is bad? I think not. Having inferior hardware is bad. Get a good PC. :P

The problem isn't the display, it's taking a 2001 era hardware, connecting it to a HDTV display and you noticing the flaws of said hardware. The 'too clean PC look' excuse just doesn't fly anymore either; the best looking PC games are vividly textured, animate very well and features well rounded and detailed models.

I guess the clarity of the image makes it look too pc-like - it has non of the traits which I associate with console gaming - that softness, tv/movie like visual grain. Too much clarity made the games all look as though you had your pc linked up to the tv. So this is the composite look you guys were raving about. I guess that's my point. I am unimpressed and I certainly don't like the look to it.

Clarity is one thing, color is another.

The entire color matrix on the Xbox changes once it goes to 480p. Composite, S-Video, and Component(480i) all look washed out compared to a PS2 with the same connections.

I've tested it on numerous setups, and Dark10x has tested it with me. When the Xbox outputs in 480p the colors become almost twice as rich.

I think you've viewed the world through interlaced glasses for too long. Progressive-scan is the future. Convert now...or fall forever!11!

For years I've been trying to find that elusive perfect display when playing video games. I got a taste of it with the DC VGA box and as perfect as that was the box I was using fucked the sound up so badly the games were unplayable.

With my HDTV and a game on progressive 480p that holy grail is pretty well in my hands. I love looking at game art the way the developers saw it and not the way NTSC interlacing bastardizes it.
